With creator Brian Watkins’ cool new series, Outer Range, now streaming on Prime Video, I recently spoke with Josh Brolin about making the mystery thriller. In the series, Brolin plays a Wyoming rancher struggling to keep his land, while also trying to keep his family together after dealing with a painful loss. One day while riding, Brolin discovers a mysterious black hole that doesn’t seem to have a bottom and everything changes.
As you can easily deduce, the hole plays a huge part in the story, and it’s one of those the less you know the better situations. I’ll just say I watched the first two episodes before talking to Brolin and I can’t wait to see where the series goes from here. For more on what the series is about you can read our review.
During the interview, Brolin talked about why he wanted to make this series after not doing TV for almost twenty years, how he’s been describing the series to friends, why he loves episodes seven and eight, the unusual and cool cinematography, how streaming allows them the freedom to change how many episodes are in each season and the run times, and reveals (covertly) how many seasons the series might last. He never actually says it, but when I asked him the question, you can see him quickly hold up three fingers with a smile. In addition, he talks about what someone should watch if you’ve never seen his work, the status of Dune 2, what role caused him to get Bell's palsy from stress, and if he knows anything about Deadpool 3.

Great questions, you can see Brolin having to really think about his answer. Good stuff. And the series is amazing. One of the best poker scenes EVER.

You are my favorite interviewer by far. Josh loved talking to you. You can tell he loved your questions. Was this originally supposed to be a 5 minute interview because I was pleasantly surprised am that it was a 16+ minute interview. I love it when you ask a question and they are shocked and say, “that’s a great question!” 😎

Hollywood can’t help itself. I lived in Montana for 4 years. Since the 80’s cowboys haven’t used horses. They aren’t cost effective. They use ATVS. Horses come up lame, they get sick, the vet bills for working horses is unreal. This series kicks the myth up a notch having the ‘bad guys’ on ATVs one the eco ‘good guy’ are on horses. It’s ridiculous

As a lot of folks already mentioned: You are an Amazing interviewer with EXCELLENT questions. Josh is also great dude. Can't wait to see more of his Gurney Halleck. I just hope they give him a baliset scene they don't need to cut. ;-) I'll definitely watch Outer Range, as I love a great western (1883 was amazing). But I'll probably wait until all episodes are out in may.

Fun fact. We owned 20 acres in Washington. The neighbors put up an enclosure ‘for their dogs’ that extended 20 yards onto our property. We knew a lawyer and found out that if we allowed it to remain, in 10 years the property would be theirs. I find it hard to believe that a fenced in ranch, that has been there for (possibly) 100 years would result in forfeiture

I would highly recommend a person taking 2 grams of Psilocybin and sit down and watch the 1st 4 episodes. This show has unbelievable Cinematography, mind bending story line...it's the next game of thrones...imo

A cinema veteran. He knows what's going on behind the scene logistically. That part is often taken for granted. The quality of rhe project depends on whose working behind the scene.

0:05 "DUNE" (2021) was nominated for 10 Oscars (including Best Picture), won 6, but Canadian director Denis Villeneuve wasn't even nominated as Best Director. Makes no sense whatsoever. The Academy should really take another look at the way the awards are evaluated🧮
