Collision of planets with gas mantles

Two planets with solid cores and gas mantles collide at various impact angles and speeds. The mantle is intentionally much more transparent than it would be in reality.

FINALLY. I have been wondering what a realistic gas giant collision would look like. So many simulators make it look like a regular collision between terrestrial plants. I get that computer processing plays a role, but still.
@lajoswinkler
@lajoswinkler Ай бұрын
It's not realistic because it misinterprets what _gas_ in gas giant means. These objects are not gaseous just because they have hydrogen and helium mantles, and their cores are not solids just because they contain silicates and metals (so called _rock_ ). These names are for chemical compositions, not states of matter.

The simulations of rocky planets colliding is pretty much the same with minor differences. At these scales any kind of collision will look much like two liquids colliding.

@@nalasprincessworld4670 No I get that but the gas seems like it would "flow" more in a less explosive way. Although according to some of these comments more research may be necessary on my end.

The collisional moons this generates raises an interesting question: Did the gas giants once have much larger 'gas dwarf' moons? Could some moons of gas giants today be remnants of such moons whose hydrogen envelope got destabilized somehow? And could exoplanet systems have gas binary systems that were generated in this manner?
@BB_Jo-e3z

if the flugout companion planet has enough mass to hold the atmosphere , not in the Roche limit with a stable orbitand can wistand solar wind, then a gas dwarf binary might exist

@jarls5890
@jarls5890 Ай бұрын
Saturns moon Titan would be close to what you describe here. The only moon we know of with a substantial atmosphere. Second largest moon in the solar system and almost as big as Mars. I guess one issue with smallish gassy moons is perhaps two-fold, temperature and gravity. Too little gravity and the gas will quickly be lost. Too low temperature and the atmosphere freezes and falls down on the surface either as a solid or a liquid. Perhaps why Jupiters Europa is as it is.
@bg1052
@bg1052 Ай бұрын
Could be the case. Even our moon is theorized to have had a thicker atmosphere than modern Earth's soon after it was formed, though for different reasons obviously. There's nothing to disprove that current moons could've been "gas dwarfs" at some point. Though it would go against our current theory on how they were formed. We think they weren't formed by collisions any of the gas giants experienced, but by small scale accretion disks the gas giants once had.
@williamsanders2439
@williamsanders2439 Ай бұрын
The thing is, once planets get to a certain size, anything that they gobble up, they tend to cling to that mass and it tends not to expell into stable orbits. Also, when they're forming, they tend to get VERY hot, and drive off any gas outside its Roche limit. This is why Jupiter's moons don't have significant atmospheres...Jupiter would have looked like a binary star because it was white hot billions of years ago.

It would've much more interesting if the gas isn't attracted to quite all the debris. Especially the moon on 1:10; felt it'd be more natural if it can't capture any gas as it'd be also heated up as much as the gas giants would after impact, and its density is obviously way less than the gas giants even before merge.
