Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Ukraine, Palestine, Why Latin America Rejects Western Hypocrisy

Colombian President Gustavo Petro joins Democracy Now! for an exclusive broadcast interview after his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he spoke of the need to end wars and stop the climate crisis. Petro is the first leftist to ever govern Colombia. He was elected in 2022 after campaigning to fight inequality and poverty, increase taxes on the wealthy, expand social programs, restore peace and end Colombia's dependence on fossil fuels. He is a former M-19 guerrilla who went on to become the mayor of Bogotá and a senator before rising to the presidency. In Part 1 of the interview, Petro discusses his position on the war in Ukraine, the occupation of Palestine and the need for consistent international norms. "We're neutral in any war, not because we don't believe that there is an occupation [in Ukraine], but because, basically, we don't believe in those who are inviting us to participate in war," says Petro, "because many of the countries of Latin America … have suffered invasions by the same countries that today are extending an invitation to reject the invasion of Ukraine."

This "principled" man you're taking about is the same guy who in 1985, when he was a member of the M19, attacked and laid seige to the Palace of Justice (the Supreme Court of Colombia) for 3 days. This "benevolent soul" is directly involved in the massacre of judges, magistrates, and civilians, the incineration of proof and legal records against Pablo Escobar and the M19. He became a politician after 1 of several peace treaties between the Colombian government and the guerilla, where the guerilla members were pardoned and became a "political party ". Is he intelligent? Very. Is he well spoken? Yes, a brilliant orator. But in reality, there's nothing pacifist or noble about this man who has ties to Castro-Chavism. With him, there's always a hidden agenda.

Do you realize this isn't entirely true? The M-19 did take over the Palace of Justice, but the guy was in jail by the time this happened, being tortured I might add. And that the actual killing was done by the colombian army to try to control the situation and to "save democracy", euphemism used by the general in charge of the operation. Not all victims died during this procedure, some people were later taken by the army to be tortured and disappeared as they suspected any survivor might be part of the guerilla. Using Castro-Chavism, a made-up term used by Colombia's right-wing party, I can see where this motivation to rewrite history comes from.

Ukraine is different than Palestine, because Russia, Ukraine, the USA, and Great Britain signed the Budapest Memorandum, guaranteeing Ukraine's borders and sovereignty, if Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons. To change the narrative and worldview of the subject society, the sovereign must establish a new language and art to express a new sensibility of right and wrong, just and unjust; a new political myth and ritual; a socializing of future generations on the new indoctrination, through mass media and through the educational institutions; a new economic value structure that legitimizes the distribution of resources as status quo; and ultimately elevating the status quo to a value system, akin to what we perceive as religion, culture, social and personal psychology, and perception of personhood. 4. These processes of conquest, assimilation and social continuity are evident in the distribution of the English, Arabic, Spanish, French, Mandarin, Portuguese, and other worldly spoken languages. That is why you have Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and other religions. And these languages come with social-economic and political systems that legitimise the status quo that we call society, where poverty exists in the midst of unbelievable wealth; where terms such as democracy are bandied around as a value for hungry masses; where the purpose of life is to die and go to Heaven; where patriotism means dehumanizing or killing people who are considered foreign; where being successful means hoarding wealth; where growth means profit extracted from the masses; where hardwork is working hard doing meaningless chores to generate profit for oneself or for whoever controls the means of production. We go around accepting this dystopia as normal, and we think that we are a superior species.
