The president of Colombia is calling for an accelerated recovery of the 300-year-old wreck of the ship San Jose that may hold a $20 billion stash of treasure, but an American company says half of that loot is theirs.

The tricky part is the wreck lies exclusively inside Columbian coast, and not the high sea, which make it hard for anyone to claim finder fees if they (the Columbian government) is not offering any. If these ship wreck group really did found it first and pass on those info before collecting...this is probably a very stupid thing to do. Either way, they wouldn't be able to salvage it if the wreck lies in Columbian waters..

you people have real listening comprehension problems. the coordinates were provided in exchange for 50%. they signed an agreement in exchange for the information. they never claimed it was outside of Colombian waters.

Exactly, if Columbia doesn't pay for the coordinators then future finds won't be brought to governments and made available to museums or scientists instead they'll go to private collections.

@imtryinghere1 well, first we don't know if such agreement exist. It could be or could not be. We don't know. Second, If this wreck really does lies within Columbia, then even if they had an agreement it wouldn't work, because you would still need to seek permission from Columbia to salvage it, if you salvage zero, then 50% of 0 is still 0...and US will not have any jurisdiction on this unless they invade Columbia, so if you want to sue, you need to do it in a Columbian court, well good luck on that. If there were EVER an agreement, the smart way to play is you don't give them the coord BEFORE you get the pay. If you had the coordinate you would know it's in Columbia and you loses all leverage and you know that coord is the only leverage...

Apparently part of the problem is that the private company (Sea Search Armada) had found a debris field but didn't find a ship. In the 90's the Colombian government couldn't find any shipwreck near the coordinates provided by SSA. The wreck of the San José wasn't found until 2015. It's not even clear - at least publicly - if the debris that Sea Search Armada found in the 80's is from this ship. Plenty of other ships were sunk in that area, and like I mentioned, they couldn't find a wreck before when SSA gave them coordinates of a debris field. So the government's claims may be valid. We don't have enough info.

It depends. If they were stolen treasure, then yes, Spain should not get even one cents from this. But if that is a colonial tax, then they should have a share, law of colonial tax is allowed even today (for example 14 African countries still paying colonial tax to france) and also US unincorporated territories (such as Guam and Puerto Rico) are still paying US federal government taxes, even tho they were under a separate tax jurisdiction. So whether you like it or not, colonial tax are pretty much allowed, and if Spain can proof these shipment are indeed taxes, then it would be a hard case for Columbia

Having worked on several wrecks; Atocha, Margarita , San Pedro, etc. I believe this wreck, which is beautiful and historic, is simply too deep to make it profitable to recover. I worked an expedition in the Bahamas a few years ago and we found two 16th century Galleons fairly intact in 3,000 fsw using an AUV. They are still there.😕

There is something missing here. The private American company hired by the Colombian government in the 90’s gave other coordinates that were proven to be wrong later on. The actual location of the shipwreck was found by the Colombian navy with support of some European scientists like 7 years ago.
