The sounds of battle that challenged the most powerful nation/empire in the world, defeated it and created the greatest and freest nation in the history of mankind.. This is the sound of freedom. It gives me goosebumps and makes me proud to be an American. God Bless those brave Colonials, a ragtag bunch of farmers and simple common folk that took up arms against tyranny and won. God Bless America. (salute)

@widhbnw efDwdwDW Um yes they did challenge. Yes, they were British. Yes, they fought British rule. Yes, they did win. It does not matter what you were it matters who you are. Yes, you should challenge the government when they raise taxes. However it was not really the taxes that was the issue. It was the lack of representation in parliament.

Wow the fifes and drums a well known British tradition that Iv not seen even here in Britain for a while. But just a quick question why are they not in blue coats and still wear the red coats of the British army of the time??? Is it more to do with heritage??
@craigjc3 Жыл бұрын
During the American Revolution the non-combantants(musicians) wore the color of the enemy so they would not be fired upon. This is the Virginia State Garrison Regiment.

Fantastic. Now how heavy are those snare drums?
@spencer_fife_and_drum_john91522 жыл бұрын
They really arent that heavy
@crosbonit5 жыл бұрын
When I went to colonial Williamsburg, the fife and drum corp that played and marched didn't' look this fancy. They only had on white shirts. But the drumming was more inspiring that this. I would have run out and picked up a musket to fight the Brits if I were around back then if I had heard what I heard at Willliamsburg.

you only beat us because we had been fighting the rest of the world.. and your lot wouldn't have known how to sail to England.. Americans don't even know how to march

Were the musicians back in the 1700s considered as "non-combatants" by the opposing forces and thereby not subjected to being fired upon? OR were they considered "fair game" and easy targets? Are these band members portraying Pre-Revolutionary War band members, or after the War started and was in effect?
@craigjc36 жыл бұрын
Correct. The musicians were non-combatants and were not to be fired upon. The Colonial Williamsburg F&D portray the Va state garrison regiment which was active during the Revolutionary war.

Among the drummers: In the front rank, far left, that boy is wearing a white epaulet on his left shoulder. No one else is. Please, what does this signify??
@Drumstyx9392 жыл бұрын
The white epaulet on his shoulder signifies him being the rank of First Sergeant, which is an appointed leadership position within the corps. The first sergeant serves as an assistant to the section leader, who wears a red epaulet.

So much horse dung on the road. Someone should've cleaned that beforehand, did you see how many people had to step in it?
@portagoosey5 жыл бұрын
They have people that go every morning with huge vacuums to clean the horse droppings. They can't keep up with it during the day, and the fife and drum corps are trained to walked right through it. The whole point is to keep things authentic during open hours. Vacuums aren't very authentic.

Are these supposed to be soldiers of the continental army?
@craigjc35 жыл бұрын
Yes. They are American field musicians. They wear red because they are Non-combatants. Thanks for watching.
@vids4kidstv8 жыл бұрын
Why do they wear red?
@craigjc38 жыл бұрын
+Vids4Kids.tv good question. Fifers and Drummers are Non combatants so they wear the same color as the enemy.
@vids4kidstv8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, that makes total sense :-)
@dawnperkins30948 жыл бұрын
As non-combatants, they wear the colors in reverse. So the revolutionary uniform was blue with red trim, the non-combatants would be red with blue trim.
@vids4kidstv8 жыл бұрын
Oh, that makes perfect sense 😄. Thank you
@taylorwilliams68667 жыл бұрын
War was considered a gentleman's game, and in that gentleman's game, it was considered bad form to knock out your opponents means of communication. What if they wanted to surrender or retreat? This would have been impossible without the aid of the fifers and drummers, so this is why they wore the opposite colors. The continental army wore blue coats with red facings, so the fifers and drummers wore red coats with blue facings. This considered themselves neutral.
