Great video, as always! The sheer amount of human suffering that the one-two punch of colonialism and capitalism have caused is hard to think about, but its so important that these things don't stay swept under the rug.

i think the fact that Jose Arcadia Segundo's story is dismissed and erased mirrors the fact that colonial oppression, massacres and bloodshed are deliberately removed and unjustly diminished from the Western "orthodox" view of history. what a juxtaposition. came across this video one year late --gave me chills nonetheless. subscribed.

Bringing these atrocities and crimes against humanity to light is very admirable. Great work 🙏

Such a wonderful video Ami! Yes, the rain seemed almost as a purgatory to me, Jose Arcadio reliving that horror over & over, lost in it, everyone waiting, life standing still while time passes. Even Ursula waiting for the rain to stop to die. That scene where they opened fire & murdered all those people was so powerful, the description of panic becoming a dragon’s tail, I could feel that danger coming, any second it would whip out catching you, take you under like the tide.

This book had a very important part to play in the formation of the way I see the world. Thank you for bringing attention to it.

Love bringing the historical and non-fiction context to books. This is making it impossible for me to talk about anything interesting in the book next to what the group has already done. Makes you look at Chiquita very differently, doesn't it? Great job!

You have definitely illuminated some of the points Marquez was making. I couldn't decipher it, but the connection between rain and capitalism makes a lot of sense. THANK YOU! Your videos are a public service! Haha

This was great Ami. I think most Americans would I’d be surprised to learn how big a role American Fruit and Sugar companies played in American and imperialism from the Philippines to Hawaii and in dozens of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. GGM’s novel exposes that history, but I suspect that many readers assume it isn’t based in fact and that he just made it up just like Jose Acardio Segundo.

Thank you Brian. It's interesting how totalitarian regimes are seen as archetypal forms of evil, but they are intimitaly related to the history of colonialism which most people know nothing about.

Many thanks for making such profound connections with Davis and Garcia Marquez. I, too, read "Late Victorian Holocausts" years ago and agree wholeheartedly with your summary of his major point. However, if I remember correctly, he does not dismiss the climatological patterns. Instead, he makes the connections between climate, capitalism, and the devastating consequences of imperialism. As someone who lives in Los Angeles, California (like Mike Davis) I am very aware of the climate patterns of El Nino/La Nina. LA can go from three or four inches of rainfall in one year to 33 or 34 the next. In an El Nino condition, the eastern Pacific /LA receives heavy rainfall, while the western Pacific/Asia is susceptible to very minimal rainfall - hence drought conditions. Does that make sense? Regarding Garcia Marquez, the connection to the United Fruit Company is strikingly similar to the actual American-engineered coup/overthrow of the democratically elected government of Jacobo Arbenz in Guatemala in 1954. Wow. Again, many thanks for a great video.

I'm not a socialist but I have seen what the Americans have to done our country Afghanistan and how the mainstream media manipulated the truth. The innocent people who were murdered by the Americans soldiers were called suspect militants.
