The long shots that shows the Mountains and the hotel are, in my opinion, inspired by how the movies production design were during the 20's and 30's, specially from Monseiur Mellies. I like that.

I find use of several framing devices with their own aspect ratios and dominant palettes really alienating in a good way. It is story told by old writer who tells of himself of past hearing a story of past again. All these layers allow movie to steep stronger into fantastic, absurdist and zany without losing it's credibility.

If the film manages to make a fun happy color of yellow drab and bleak, you know it's Wes Anderson

Great analysis! Do you think that the multi framed aspect of the story relate to the zany style of the film?

I thought the movie took place just before WW1, figuring Zero was probably born between 1885-1890, since he is quite older in the 60s. And the uniforms are definitely not WW2 era (at least I can’t really tell I’m not too familiar with uniforms)

The vehicles definitely seem post ww1.

The film was inspired in Stefan Zweig,an Austrain Author who left his country during WW2.
