Cheryl, first let me say I am enjoying Sweater 101 very much. I had read other sweater design books and was intimidated. Your book makes the whole process very understandable and I finally feel like I might be able to give it a go. Now, my question: My first me-designed sweater is going to be a very simple boatneck sweater. However, I am trying to incorporate (learn) something new on each project I do. For this one, I wanted to do my first colorwork beyond horizontal stripes. I want one wide vertical stripe up the center, maybe 10-12 stitches wide (I am also going to have a central cable, so I am using two new techniques on this one!) Something tells me that instead of doing the technique you show here, I should do an intarsia technique (due to the width of the stripe)? And will that work as it is running along the entire front? I am trying to avoid hand seaming as I am especially horrible at this when using dark yarn, which I can't see well and which I am using on this project (trying to use up all the dark yarn I purchased before I discovered I couldn't see). Thank you for guiding me on this. I am using my Bond (I don't hand knit but I do crochet).

Thanks Anne. You are absolutely right. You need to introduce the stripe with intarsia and it will work all the way up the front but I don't quite understand what you mean by "And will that work as it is running along the entire front?" unless you mean all the way up. The only tricky thing is that you need to make a wide gauge swatch and stick the cable in the middle. Cables pull in so you will have to add more sts to compensate for that. How many you won't know until you measure. Look at page 65 of Sweater 101 to see how I added extra stitches when I added that cable and notice the placement of the increases and decreases. Hi Cheryl. I just recently bought the Incredible Sweater Machine off of eBay, and am having a blast so far! However, I can't seem to do the closed edge cast-on, no matter how hard I try. I followed the instructions that came with the machine, and also watched videos on how to do it. For some reason, my machine won't work with forward working position. Do you have any tips? Thanks!

Hi KT . . . without seeing it and working with it, it's hard for me to make a suggestion. Do you belong to Facebook? There's an Ultimate Sweater Machine group there that is very helpful and has lots of people who have the newer machines like yours (I still have my old blue BOND). Maybe doing it too tightly? Which method? E-wrap? Chain? How have you attached the weighted hem? See? Lots of variables, but you might start tinkering with adjusting them.
