Both this video and movie were a long time coming Damien! Glad you enjoyed it, looking forward to watching it myself. Last night, I finished my first draft to the epilogue of my upcoming debut novel, The Awakening 1. Although I still need to rewrite and edit it, you cannot imagine how I feel. The economy’s not doing well in Singapore, same as the rest of the world. But perhaps my debut will come soon!

In the movie Annihilation, the Colour entity has a unique combination of moving fractals that makes it hard to describe its colour. I think it's a great representation of indescribable Color. But I really appreciated this movie, start to finish.

Arkham Reporter there is also a non-zero chance that the person commented it as “magneta” specifically. I remember listening to an interview with George RR Martin that old tropes, stories, and structures in the past do not translate well to today's modern time due to the new strong need of flesh out characters and cruelty/lack of care to people that are not known well. And I think that is a true thing, people now and days are a bit lazy when imagining themselves in a shoe of someone they know very little about. Now they kinda need to be force-fed reasons why this character is good, why they should care, just so THEN they can feel something if anything happens to that character instead of just acknowledging the event itself is a scary or horrific concept to happen to anyone. But I have to admit, i wonder what Lovecraft adaptations would seem like 50 years from now with the media that exists at that time. haha.

Good review. Another aspect of the cosmic indifference in the narrative was that the sexy daughter and the studly grad student didn't get in bed together and give us the usually obligatory sex scene, which as soon as both characters were introduced I thought would be inevitable. Indeed, I thought upon first viewing that that was the very reason Stanley changed one son to a daughter in the first place. Very refreshing to see a movie can be made without that happening. Just another point at which normal human life and emotion have no place in a Lovecraftian universe. Anyway very nice review.

Yeah I’m the same with you there, with wanting it being in the 20s or 30s or even before. I love the old look in influences/adaptions with Lovecraft or just the nature in his work. Like gothic and cosmic horror which reminds me have you heard or played Bloodborne? It’s a PS4 exclusive but to me it felt like a real love letter to Lovecraft. Probably the best cosmic horror game I’ve played in my opinion. Definitely worth checking out for any Lovecraftion cultists but anyway I was surprised it did work but I’m glad it did and I’m glad we got someone who finally has insight into the mythos, a true fan. The music is beautiful and eerie, the environment is very victorian and it's set up to put you on edge very easily. One of your viewers commented that Richard Stanley's inclusion of the Necronomicon was "pointless", but I disagree. Yes, there are some HPL references thrown in just for fan service, but I don't think that's the case with the Necronomicon. The reason for my disagreement is that it is one of the books being read by Lavinia Gardner , whose amateurish spellcasting was, in my opinion, the unintentional cause of the doom visited upon her family. She's in over her head reading forbidden tomes (yes, I know that what she's reading is the pulp paperback "Simon" version, but that's another issue). I think Lovecraft would have approved -- or at least tolerated -- this addition, as she represents someone opening up a portal that should have remained forever closed , and ends up paying dearly as a result, a trope in so many of his tales. That scene opens the movie, and though Stanley, to my knowledge, has never specifically linked her incantations with the horrors to follow, I can't see him starting the action like that just as a coincidence. The Lavinia-Wicca connection is something he added to Lovecraft's story that I think works.

Just watched it. I think Adam at YMS reviewed it pretty well. There's no clear threat to avoid - just things happening to the characters that don't inspire arcs or changes within them. This NEARLY happened with Cage's character smelling his dying father's hospital bed all around him and him escaping into fantasy when his family falls apart, even dooming his daughter to join the "fake family". A far stronger movie is Annihilation, and more scientific and conceptual also. Also regarding the source of the colour, was that Nyarlathotep in Carcosa at the end? Pretty cool.

4:40 Um.... Sin City? Underworld (yes I know that doesn't count but it might as well been black and white), 300 (same argument as for underworld)... We can handle colorless movies, there allot of movies with muted color tones. Many of them vary good so this could have worked.
@ArkhamReporter
@ArkhamReporter 4 жыл бұрын
Lighthouse was the last big B&W film but I think that in general apart films with such gimmicks like Sin City (gimmick being colour displayed at times like the Yellow Bastard) there will be a % of potential viewers who say "nah". And in the case of this film it would be copying the German adaptation. Stanley wouldn't get sued but it's still kind of a cheap shot.

In defense of Stanley humanizing the cast more....I think that for a story like this one, it calls for a slightly more intimate look at the family. After all, watching them go mad is half the fun, so if we have no frame of reference for what they were like as normal people, we don't really see the full depth of how this horror affects them. It's different from Mountains of Madness, where the cast are all career explorers, engineers, geologists and all manner of scientists meant to drive forth a quest of exploration, where it's much easier to let them take a back seat to the revelations and other phenomena. Ostensibly, both groups of characters serve as witnesses, but I think in the case of Color, it's alright to give the family at least some nuance.

Great review but oh boy I hated this film! What made the short story so powerful was that the main character only saw the effects of the comet in fragments and you were left to piece together what was happening to the family which became tragic and terrifying. And you really felt the indifference of the entity. In this movie we have some terrible characterisation and just shear gore which became so boring. When the kid decides to climb down the well I almost turned it off it was so mind numbing. And oh my gosh, having the sheriff at the end just die so pointlessly just gave no respect to the entity and the character itself. If this is going to be people’s first introduction to Lovecraft it’s going to hurt an entire generation. Lovecraft would have been so disappointed in this movie.

Had they used another name and it had not been boosted as Lovecraft. I could have appreciated it more I think. It was ok. I had thought how I would have made a film of this story. The technical side would have been easy and would have been very different in appearance. The film is far too colorful. It crashes the tone of even the film story. I think there is a difference between loving and respecting someone's story and being a fan. I, like most who enjoy this film much more than I am very happy to see any adaptations of Lovecraft's stories on film.

Do you think Cage was a reasonable choice? He seems in line with Jeffrey Combs and the poster art seems to reflect that. Also I think colour should be the last thing a Lovecraftian movie should have. Even for this story, the colour is in your mind. Think of the glow in The Lighthouse, a new favourite gothic supernatural movie for me.

I liked the film so much i actually left a review on amazon (My first), on a side note am i the only one really hoping for a "Good" adaptation of The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward? Not necessarily the third of the Stanley trilogy of adaptations , but maybe picked up by another director, i watched the made for TV one a few years back (Forgotten the name now) but it was brought into the modern times and i thought it was a little bit bland.

Sequels are tricky. Expectations. Not to mention once certain elements in Hollywood see how successful this was they will stick their noses in and interfere with the creation and bastardize the story. To be honest I think that while the budget will be bigger next time there will be something in that film which wrecks the Lovecraft feeling.

How come Stanley does not have the same cool accent as you? He sounds British?

Well he has been living outside SA longer than me and accents can change. And in SA there are some regional accents even among English-speaking South Africans.

I really liked the movie except that the Necronomicon is accessible for a college girl; She is so grim that she listen black metal, do black magic and fall in love with a stranger. Love in a Lovecraft story! WTF haha I also hated the hippy hermit man, he was the worst character. Ah Holywood, always force feeding your shit.

I liked the film. I thought it really missed the boat in terms of the design/choice of location for the farmhouse itself and the land around it. Way too lush and idyllic. And really thought it cheap concept to make the daughter into some kind of occult weirdo. Ordinary people doing realistic ordinary things contrast far better with outre interstellar madness than...oddballs, like this family. (I have pointed to the farmhouse and landscape in a film released around the same time DARK WATER---not an sf horror film but with some horrific elements from real life----as what I thought would've worked much better in keeping with the story's tone.) Someone like a Bill Paxton, if he was still around, would be better suited as a lead---a very ordinary kinda guy----than Cage, who I like, who is also noted for being a bit bonkers. Yet, the film does create a strong aura of "HPL-ness", particularly with that horrific "melding" about which we need not speak of here, and it all comes together ultimately. (Being particularly nit-picky about this film, based as it is on my favorite Lovecraft tale, I missed the "THE" and the spelling of color as "COLOUR" in the title, so....gets off to a meh start for me in that regard). Very much look forward to another Stanley HPL film...sooner the better. Thanks for the commentary!

Hi there. Yeah, the film didn't get me massively excited but in terms of what we have in Lovecraft films, this is better than average. It also has more high points than low points. As for the film's title, yes it bugged me too. I believe HPL used the English spelling of "colour" and did include "The". I of course had to adjust my videos title to fit the film since the video is about the film.

Ward is supposed to be hps Mary Sue. Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Howard Phillips. Ward Phillips. The character was a pulp fiction writer. Bad casting choice Edit: wow I wrote this before the what I presumed to be underage girl referred to the obviously thirty something ward as "kinda hot". Wtf am I watching rn. Do they pervert Lovecraft to get off on it? Edit edit: this is the most unlikable protagonist I've ever encountered. Thank the lord for Mr cage

Do you mean the racial issue? Well, HPL does insert himself in his stories regularly (Randolph Carter for example) but not always. I'm not sure if its the case in his story, Color. Could be.

I so wanted to love The color out of space movie. Really though, it's shit. I'd had enough by the half way point. Lovecrafts story creeped me out. The film just bored me. I sincerely hope Richard Stanley leaves Lovecraft alone. A real opportunity missed I think.
