Thank you. Just bought a used Nikon and auto feeder for 1000's of slides. This is super helpful.

Thank you for this tutorial. I have had a Plustek 8100 for a few years and relegated it to a box in my basement because of the Silverfast software. After watching your tutorials, I downloaded Vuescan and started scanning some of my 1500+ railroad slides and achieved results that I was genuinely happy with and looked liked the original slides. Thank you for the tutorials and getting me excited about my slides again

Hello Christopher Thanks for this tutorial which helped considerably in setting up my Canon FS4000 scanner for scanning slides. I have however still been having difficulty bringing out sufficient detail in shadow areas - particularly with underexposed slides ; I tried doing 4 passes as you suggested but found that there was barely any improvement in shadow detail and the shadow areas remain "blocked up". However I came across on another website a reference to the "multi exposure" setting which your tutorial just says to leave unchecked, so I had not previously tried this option. But, according to the VueScan manual, this setting is intended to bring out detail from the shadow areas ; here (between inverted commas) is what the manual says : - "This option provides a way to get additional detail from the darker parts of the scanned image. It is available on scanners that are able to increase the CCD exposure time. A first pass is performed as usual with the normal RGB exposure. This will be an appropriate exposure for the image as a whole. Then a second pass is performed with a longer exposure, which can reveal additional detail in dark areas not captured in the first pass. VueScan then merges the results of the two by choosing from either the first or second exposure pass." Having (albeit only briefly) tried this setting it does indeed seem to produce a scan that compared to a scan without this setting gives a wider range of detail into the shadow, so thought I would bring this to your attention in case you (and others reading this posting) were unaware of this function. Thanks again for taking the trouble to produce a useful tutorial.

Thank you for the excellent tutorial. One small question: with regard to using 48 bit depth, what is your guidance on why not to select 64 bit RGBI. Is it because the "I" in RGBI is for an infrared channel used only for the dust and scratch removal processing? Would using 64 bit RGBI have any advantage over 48 bit otherwise, or would it just unnecessarily bump up file size and/or scan time for no other benefit? Again, thanks again for producing such a concise and informative tutorial.

Would the software work with the old Primefilm 1800u scanner?
@christophercrawford7773 ай бұрын
I looked on Hamrick Software's website, since I didn't know the answer. It says that the 1800u is supported by Vuescan, but only on Windows, not on Mac, and you have to install a driver that doesn't come with Vuescan. Here's the info page, which has a link to the driver you need to download and install to make the scanner work with Vuescan: www.hamrick.com/vuescan/pie_primefilm_1800u.html#technical-information

Thank you for this very useful tutorial. I am using version 9.8.32.10 and the menus have been added to. I am struggling with scanning prints, both 100 year old B&W and 1970/80/90's colour where I have no film. Please would you consider a tutorial about scanning prints too?

I've had several people ask, and I plan to do a print scan tutorial soon. I've got a lot of serious health problems and have been sick almost continuously most of 2024. I have some prints my family wants scanned soon, so I will do the tutorial then. I'll comment here when it is ready.

Thanks for making this tutorial. My impression is that the goal is to make the scan as close to the desired end result as possible so that the scan has the information to be read in PS or LR. Is that not correct? For example, increasing Brightness to lighten up the shadows, kind of like exposing to the right. I have checked the pixel colors box to see clipping and/or out of gamut and then struggled to fix an issue with the various sliders and the histogram in the Color tab. Do you not do this and rely on PS/LR for the fix? Also, would 64 bit be even better than 48, putting the scan time aside? Thanks again.

One disadvantage of selecting the highest DPI might be that most cheaper scanner kinda suck, and don't actually produce more quality... so it just slows you down a lot while scanning.
