DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OFF-GRID AND SELF SUFFICIENT HOMESTEADING
Definition of "Off-Grid": Off-the-grid or off-grid is a characteristic of buildings and a lifestyle designed in an independent manner without reliance on one or more public utilities. The term "off-the-grid" traditionally refers to not being connected to the electrical grid, but can also include other utilities like water, gas, and sewer systems, and can scale from residential homes to small communities.
Self-sufficient homesteading means needing no outside help in satisfying one's basic needs, especially about the production of food, and homesteading means living a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. So by those definitions, the key to homesteading is learning to be self-sufficient.

So sorry about Sierra having cancer! I've had 2 over the last 20 years that had cancer. The Vet couldn't do anything for either of mine except make them as pain free as possible. I pray they can help Sierra. I'll pray for Sierra. God bless.

Do it. It's good for the soul. I sold my house in April and spent all summer living in my truck. It's Alaska so it's probably easier than in most places I would imagine, but the freedom from a mortgage and utility bills has been amazingly therapeutic. I still work a regular job, shower in campgrounds or occasional hotels. Sounds ghetto to some people but I wouldn't trade this for grid-life again for anything.

I was about to post what a lucky dog Sierra is until I read your update on her cancer 😢 I’ve been through two lots of cancer myself - colon and cervical so I do have some experience. I pray there will be an effective treatment for Sierra, and despite her diagnosis- I still think she is a very lucky dog. So loved, enjoying the most amazing time with her dad in beautiful places. My fur baby ( a Birman cat) has been very poorly with an incurable condition called Triaditis, with associated interstitial cystitis which can be very painful. He had major surgery to diagnose it and was only given 2 yrs to live, even though he was only a young cat at diagnosis. I had to sell so many things to pay for his initial surgery and in-hospital care, but he’s so worth it. He saw me through my second cancer battle - his love was unconditional and he never failed to soothe me after my long journeys for treatment. It was now my turn to do the same for him. He is on a special prescription diet, daily steroids, I’ve had to change to a pn expensive special low dust litter ( to protect his urethra/bladder) and he’s currently very well- it’s 2.5 yrs since his diagnosis - atm our Vet sees no reason for him not to live to a relatively ‘normal’ age for a cat as long as the condition stays under control. I’ve given up a lot to pay for all of this- and I feel blessed that he has taught me that ‘things’ really don’t matter, they don’t enhance your life the way your family or a much-loved pet does. I hope Sierra’s surgery goes well and that she will have many more pain free years living her wonderful life with you.

many years ago at elk camp, and the 2nd year with our big wall tent (GP medium which is 16x32) we had half of it collapse due to wet snow. We didnt have a ridge pole for it. Had to sew up a few holes on site and the next year we had a very stout ridge pole. Never another problem. I loved when we got heavy snow and couldn't go anywhere for several days. Now I just have a Davis tent 10x12 which is perfect for one or two people. And a wood stove of course.

Hi James, yeah this is really a great tent (Big Horn III) and hope Cabela's decides to start making it again. I really love sitting by the stove when it's snowing cooking breakfast, reading a book, or listening to a good podcast. Living like this has restored my eagerness for life. If you're interested in checking out some other winter tents then I'd recommend Ellis Tents out of Durango and Snowtrekker Tents out of Wisconsin. Both are solid companies. I love these camping days when the weather has a bite, there's snow on the ground and falling, and I'm well-prepared for several days with ample food, water, and warmth. It's so quiet you can hear the snow falling outside. Surrounded by whiteness, just a bit of moonlight brightens everything, casts eerie shadows, and reminds me of how incredibly fortunate and insignificant I am compared to the immensity and perfectness of nature. I ache a bit when I see these videos bit I do love them so.

Hi. I love to watch your films - I find it so relaxing. Thankyou for posting them. Here in England we have some undeniably beautiful countryside, with a rich history. However, I feel that our American friends have far greater access to 'wild' unpopulated areas. I really enjoy watching you make the most of your right to roam and camp on public lands. You live in an amazing country Sir.

My kind of experience. Been camping for 25 years in Scouting and way before that. I understand the solitude and the--hard to describe--but, the confidence knowing that you are not only surviving, but thriving out in severe nature is priceless. The Franklin stove is so neat! Seeing that in this vid, I would not be that afraid to try it. What is the empty weight of the box itself? And of course, you are not really alone when you have your dog with you. I use my Dutch Oven for everything (OK, so I have three of 'em...). Yep, the lid is a great fry pan! Long live cast iron! I got a zillion questions about little details. I subscribed, so I think some of 'em will be answered in other vids. Thank you for a great channel!

Hey Randall, thanks for tuning in and sharing your thoughts on winter camping. I was in Scouts when I was younger and have always enjoyed being outside. The stove weighs around 40lbs, definitely a bit heavy to lug around but it's a workhorse so I don't mind. Look forward to another winter camping season to start up shortly, really hope the snowstorms dump lots of accumulation. ~ Brian

You might want to clean that pan from time to time. Going out in the snow with diarrhea in the middle of the night wont be fun.

Hey man, love the videos. I just had a couple questions. What model tent do you have? And also, what kind of safety precautions do you have to take with a wood burning stove in a tent? I feel like I'd be worried about carbon monoxide the whole time.

@Shen Kichin, as long as he has that clean pipe in, he should be ok. Back during school in Japan, we had a similar situation during winter. We had big stove in our classroom with pipe that let out fumes.

I’ve seen that most of these van/camper folk have a carbon monoxide alarm at all times.

Too, with long-term use, the micro-particles that get in the air whenever the door is opened to add/stir the wood can lead to serious health issues.
