In this DIY video, I show you how to upgrade your manual tongue jack on your travel trailer to an electric tongue jack. Recently I installed a Lippert Components 3500lb power tongue jack on our travel trailer. The installation was extremely easy and didn't take much time. We had to install this jack because our manual tongue jack broke. Since we had to replace our tongue jack, we figured why not upgrade to an electric jack? Please let me know if you have any questions about the install. Thanks for watching!

Thanks. Great info. The one I have now is an FIC brand that came with the trailer. The shaft broke! So, although the motor worked fine, I could not use the hand wrench to have it lift off the trailer. Had no choice but to buy a new one.

Great video very simple instruction thank you my issue is and I’m not sure if you can help me with it or anyone for some reason the one I’m replacing was scraping on the ground. Just go ahead and replace it with another electrical tongue jack but I’m worried that it’s gonna scrape on the ground as well so I don’t wanna just replace it and have to keep replacing it. I’m pretty sure it was the scraping that ruined my last one so I’m not sure are there shorter ones like ones with a shorter steam on them either way I don’t know if there’s some way of making it so that it doesn’t scrape on the ground. I can’t seem to find any videos specifically about this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you hook up to the battery , that red goes to positive and that’s it?
@ColoradoCamperman

Yes, the bolts on the tongue act as the negative/ground.

If you do this make sure you use water proof heat shrink on your ring terminal do not just clamp it on like he did.. also do not use wire strippers as those are not crimpers if your going to do this do it right, otherwise nice job 😁

I noticed yours doesn’t have the 30 amp inline fuse on the power cord. Or maybe I couldn’t see it. I recently ordered the one you listed there and it has the 30 amp fuse attached to it.

Great upgrade! Do all tounge jacks, both electric and manual, lift to a standard height? How about weight rating?
@ColoradoCamperman
@ColoradoCamperman 3 жыл бұрын
Great questions! Yes, this is supposed to lift up to the height of taller trucks. It says 28.5" on the description of the jack. Weight rating is 3,500lbs - that is tongue weight though. Our trailer's tongue weight is around 700lbs so it lifts it with no problem. Thanks for watching!
@evanwindom3265
@evanwindom3265 Жыл бұрын
I'm no expert, but I think the way to handle tall trucks is actually to lower the hitch on the truck. They make all kinds of options for that. Otherwise, raising the tongue could put a pretty serious tilt on the trailer.

Is that hooked right to positive red or positive ground?
@ColoradoCamperman
@ColoradoCamperman Жыл бұрын
I hooked the red positive wire directly up to the positive side of the battery. The manufacturer says that it is grounded through the metal jack touching the tongue.

How do you keep the battery charged?
@ColoradoCamperman
@ColoradoCamperman 2 жыл бұрын
200 watts of solar. Also, you can manually crank the jack. I actually had to do this the last time I picked up our camper from our storage unit. I forgot I removed my battery. It is a 3/4in socket - same as my stabilizing jacks. Thanks for watching.

Trying to size a jack for my trailer. Is the 3500 lb model you show for the total weight it could lift "at the tongue" (not tongue weight)? My trailer max weight is 22" long and weighs max 6,100 lbs, so how do I size this thing? I've searched the web on this but it's not really clear....can you make a suggestion?
@ColoradoCamperman
@ColoradoCamperman 2 жыл бұрын
The 3500lbs should be tongue weight. Our tongue weight is roughly 700lbs. So the 3500lbs is more than adequate. Thanks for watching.

Do you have any wires on the tongue of your jack to tap into? If not, I guess you will have to run an extra cord to a location where you can get 12 volt power. Hopefully that makes sense. Good luck and thanks for watching!

No ground wire?
@ColoradoCamperman

Nope, no ground wire. They say as long as there is bare metal exposed on the jack and tongue where they meet, that is considered the ground. Thanks for watching.

It seems pretty straightforward, but the jack seems a little slow...
@ColoradoCamperman
@ColoradoCamperman Жыл бұрын
Yep, it's an easy install. It only takes maybe 45 seconds to raise or lower. In the grand scheme of things, it's really not that much time and you get used to it. Beats the heck out of manually cranking in the heat of the summer.
@evanwindom3265
@evanwindom3265 Жыл бұрын
@@ColoradoCamperman Yep. And it's a game changer if you're mounting anything on the tongue of the trailer that interferes with the swing arc of the crank. I've ordered a light-weight jack block that will go under the jack and reduce the amount of travel required, and that would speed things up, too.

Whichever trailer we buy will be more of a 'dollar friendly" one so I can fix it up the way I want to. I'm sure being dollar friendly it will have a less than optimum lift. A new lift will be one of the 1st additions or it will be stuck away in the pass through for when the "dollar friendly" lift gives up the ghost.

So far the jack has been awesome! We just got back from a 6 day camping trip and the jack worked flawlessly. So far we've gone on 7 trips this season and we have had no issues with the jack. My son really likes helping hook up now and push the buttons! Thanks for watching Richard!

Why cant i just hook up the power wire to the 12 volt accessories wire that turns on the inside cargo lights so i don't have to install a battery. I understand ill need to have my truck on or key on but so what and trailer plugged in.
