Round pencils will give you a gap between each one to allow the epoxy to surround them. Also, epoxy is easier on tools and less toxic to breath than polyester resin. In my experience anyway. I also like to spray lacquer between sanding grits to try and reduce the smearing effect of the pencil "lead". Fun project for sure!

The problem with fibreglass resin is that it EATS your steel tools, though there's not really a better way to hold them together.
