Colorful Lampwork Twistie with Silver Glass Tutorial + Recipe (& what changes I would make next time...)
My goal with this latticino design was to create a vibrant rainbow striped cane that also contained exposed silver glass. I decided not to encase the silver glass so that I could reduce the glass before encasing and capture all those gorgeous colors in the glass inside a bead...
I almost got there with this cane...but there are definitely a few things I would've done differently, which I share in this video.
Here's the glass recipe for this latticino:
Base of oracle white (Double Helix)
Opaque stringer stripes - red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, cobalt blue (Effetre)
Basic clear glass (Effetre)
Straw yellow transparent (Effetre)
Clio silver glass (Double Helix)
Encased intense black stringer (Effetre)

What is Lampworking? It is the art of creating small glass beads (and other glass elements) by melting rods of colored glass in a flame, then winding that melted glass around a steel rod (mandrel), which creates the bead hole. After the artist is finished making the bead on the mandrel, and the glass hardens back to a solid state, It is placed into a pre-heated kiln to soak for a length of time which strengthens (anneals) the glass. After the annealing process in the kiln, and the glass is cool, it is removed from the steel mandrel and a bead has been created! After some cleaning, the bead is now ready to be used in any jewelry design.

Finally someone that shows how to use the mandrel globs left over from a twist. Thanks so much. Every twisty is a treat. Encasing black is always nice idea. Thanks so much.

I could not agree more! There can be so much extra glass left on the mandrels after making twisties - or even murrini cane. It's a great way to make the most of it! :) Love the idea of trying this cane over black - it should produce some nice colors with the Clio. Maybe adding a bit of silver foil underneath too...! :D

I feel so reassured when I see someone reattach the ends of a pull and go again. I'd love to see you use this cane in some beads.

Yes! There's a decent amount of glass left behind that we can still put to good use. :) I'm excited to test this cane in beads! :D

I add a swipe of base (white) to the edge so I can get my pattern on
