While it is a great white pencil, I have to disagree. The Holbein soft white is by far the most opaque white pencil ever. The Derwent Drawing Chinese White is great, though, right up there with the Luminance white, Prismacolor white, and the Holbein white.

My 5 favorite pencils sets to safe would be, my 40 years old Koh-I-Nor pencils, followed by my vintage Karisma Colors (the same pencil like Prismacolor but in better quality), the polish Macaron set, then the Royal Talens and the Pablos. If I have a chance to safe one more, I would take all of the Polychromos. However, as I can buy them everywhere in Germany, I chose the other sets that I cannot replace otherwise.

Oh the prisma greys are most useful for mixing into the other colours to mute them or create shadows without using black. Greys and browns are both super important for that. You can see people use this trick with alcohol markers a lot but it works with prismas because they are super buttery, even if you've already burnished. Try it out.

If this hypothetical situation of only keeping five sets ever becomes a reality, I'm first in line to buy your Polychromos pencils 😊! My list of five are 1. Polychromos, 2. Lightfast/Luminance (I have a mixed selection of open stock colors from each brand collected in a palette that I consider to be a "set". Cheating? ...maybe 😏), 3. Prismacolors, 4. Vintage Derwent Series No. 19 (Rexall Cumberland branded) 5. Faber-Castell Goldfaber. If I could only have one, it would most definitely be the Polys. It's amazing how each artist has their preferences, and I love seeing what artists prefer from their supply stash, so thank you for this video!

I will have to try some Black Widow pencils. Even though I am in Australia, I have not yet tried them. I find buying from physical shops easier for me because other pencil brands are so expensive online due to exchange rate as well as shipping costs. I'm so glad that I am not the only one who hated my prismacolor set in the beginning. I wanted to hurl them out the window, especially when you see so many beautiful coloring pages online. But once you start getting the techniques down, you are good at that point. I don't have a top 5 yet, but I have a top 3. I love my black widows, kalour, and prismacolor. I do agree that prismacolor has the best color range of all the brands and then black widow. I just purchased Markart and I'm liking them so far. Beautiful colors. Also I have been eyeballing derwent pencils so I am glad you spoke about them with favor. Oh, I must add that I love the polys green hues. My favorite green pencil is chrome oxide green. I wish prisma had very deep green like this. I got to try working more with them. I kinda feel like you with the polys as of right now. I just felt like coloring with them for the first time in probably near a year. But they are nice quality pencils. I just love wax based pencils a lot more. The layering, blending, and how you can pull colors around has spoiled me. So easy and comfortable.

1) Museum Aquarelle 2) Inktense 3) Derwent Drawing 4) Luminance 5) Prismacolor I don’t have any full sets except the Derwent Drawing, and some of these I only have a handful of. I just collect them gradually. Most pencils make my hands hurt too much, and the ones on my list are softer and easier on my hands. The Drawing pencils are the absolute softest, and they have the best white. I wish they’d come out with another 100 colors!

Zero Prismacolors for me now. Even with proper sharpening, the breakage & quality control issues are too much hassle. I've switched to Derwent Colorsoft, Chromaflow, ProColor & Graphtint & couldn't be happier. Chromaflows are 100% better than Prismacolors. They are competitively priced, highly pigmented, do not break, excellent blending & now have a full 150 color set. Arteza & Artisto are also wayyyyy better than Prismacolors & wayyyy cheaper. I now only use 5 Prismacolors, Indigo Blue & Prussian Green for shading b/c they are fairly translucent & Deco Pink & Yellow & non photo Blue. Other than those, I'm permanently done with Prismacolors. IDK why everyone swears by Prisma White, it is NOT a good white. Try the Colorsoft White & then you'll know how bad the Prisma White truly is.

I’m in the minority, I am not a prisma fan. I do use mine though, but it’s rare. I laughed when you said you would rather have something besides the Derwent drawing Chinese white. It’s my most replaced pencil. I call it my magic white pencil. Procolour are also great for sharpening up details. I use mine on pages though - I’m definitely a layering girly. It’s meditational. My top 5: luminance, lightfast, polys, drawing, and idk maybe black widow but I think a softer pencil would be a better addition 😂 If I had to grab them fast and go though, I’d take my luminance and all the rest would be Derwent. I have too many boxed sets to leave them. Priorities! 😂

Prismas are probably my fave all around, but I'm not quite as enthusiastic as you. You know your pencils, that's for sure! 👍 I used to do more color pencil work, but now I do more watercolor and other painting work than before, so I'm not quite as intimate in my familiarity with all my pencil brands: Prismacolor, Polychromos, Caran d'Ache Supracolor2 water-soluble, (great!) Luminance, (40 color set...people rave about these, but I haven't used them enough to say they're worth the higher price over others,) Spectrum Noir floral WS (beautiful delicate pinks) + can't recall brands of pastel sets, small set of Graphitint, Inktense, "beautiful looking" set of 24 Amazon Basic set that I got for $5...but I've never used...people say they're crap but I've never tested them out. I've got some others sets but that's all I can remember right now. Thanks for sharing!

Its good for pencils that don't really do open stock to have pencils that are close together for certain colours. The yellows are overkill, but the skin tones are not. The black widow collection is pretty well balanced in this regard except the forest greens. I can see those being missed. Purple doesn't surprise me. Its tough to make purple in budget sets cause it's expensive. Yellow is the cheapest but I've definitely seen worse offenders for overkill yellow. The neutrals don't surprise me because black widow has dedicated skin tone sets, which is also why the pinks don't surprise me. Im sure it might seem odd to have so many cyan colours, but that's handy because if you run out you can CMYK mix any colour you want between the extra cyans, magentas, and yellows. Its annoying with a slow medium like this, sure, but at least you can mix the purples you're lacking yourself and not waste pencils.

Procolour is my favourite set as well. I love them because I've never had a single pencil break, and like you said, they last for ages. I've had mine for years, and the only colour I've bought open stock is black - and it turns out I'm still using the original that came with the set because although it's small, it's still lasting. I also like that I rarely have to sharpen them because they keep their point for a long time. Edit: I think the reason these aren't very popular with a lot of people is because most colourists prefer soft core pencils, while professional artists want sets with a higher percentage of lightfast colours.

I am the opposite to you 😂 My number 1 is Albrecht Dürers, then my FC polys, then my Black Widows, then Derwent Artist pencils, then my Castle Arts. Prisma which I have the 150 set bought from Blick so not fake ones are way too mushy for my very heavy hand. They are trash to me and I have tried and tried using them and the colors are beautiful don’t get me wrong and I try being light handed but once I really get into coloring I just forget and my fingers slide down to my normal place and snap broken lead and mushy color everywhere 😂 I can’t help myself plus I love the watercolor I can use with the Albrecht Dürer and go back and detail with the polys.

My personal line up would be: 1. Prismacolors (a classic, can be found everywhere, work amazing, and they hold sentimental value to me as some of mine are vintage Eagle Prismacolors my mother gave to me) 2. Holbein (I got my set when I was going through a bad time, also holds sentimental value, and I just love them) 3. Polychromos (another with sentimental value, my mom bought them for me for Christmas) 4. Derwent Lightfast/Caran D'ache Luminance (I've got small sets and open stock of both I've made into a small set. Thats probably cheating but whatever. I use them as one set.) 5. This one was very difficult, but I settled on my Derwent Drawing pencils, as I don't have very many other sets of pencils than the ones I listed before this, and all of them are rather small sets, like 12-30 at most. Of those sets, however, the only one I can't live without and would be devestated to lose would be my Derwent Drawing pencils. Only wish they'd expand the line I don't have a ton of pencils, so the first 4 were super easy. I really want to try the Derwent Procolour and the Chromaflows because those are the only pencils that might cause me to change my mind on some of these. If I could add a 6th as of right now, that would easily be my Caran D'ache Pablos, as those are probably my next favorites and I tend to use them often with all of the pencils I also listed above (and work wonderfully with all of them!)

Unfortunately Prisma colors are not available to me, definitely would love to try them. The Derwent drawings are my only full set of pencils and I actually totally love the white in the set. Since the Polychromos and Pablo white's are not opaque enough. But I also really hope that they add a dark grey to the Derwent drawings I use them a lot to color animals and that color is totally missing.

Tho I just received a gift of Blick’s brand pencils (set of 72) yesterday & I am anxious to see how those feel. I am not a huge fan of Polychromos either. I also hafta “be in the mood” before I use them. I think that I tend to favor soft, waxy leads vs harder, oil based leads.

I would love to have the Derwent Drawing set, currently have 3 colors. Will definitely collect all the Inktense but still am just shy over 72 for now. I would love to get the Prismacolors but they’re crazy expensive where I live. Was thinking to get the Coloursoft instead. Or the Supracolors or Pablos… have a few of each, still trying those out. Also love my Polychromos but they often need too many layers for my liking, maybe they’re too transparent for some uses for me? Don’t know what it is exactly.

Now the question is what are your 5 favorite papers? The pencil is only half of the equation. The pencil and paper must work together as a team. My favorite pencils are the Derwent Lightfast, Caran D'Ache Luminance, Caran D'Ache Museum Aquarelle, Caran D'Ache Landscape, Caran D'Ache Portrait. I can't deal with Prismacolor anymore. I started out using Berol Prismacolor and they were great. When they went away, I just couldn't go to the art store every 5 minutes because of pencils breaking. And going by bus because I don't have a car. I spent more time to and from art stores than drawing. And I do have an array of pencil sharpeners. My list is a result of saving and saving for many years to get the pencils I wanted. I do have Polychromos and Albrecht Durer and I like them very much but they are not in my top 5. As for graphite pencils, Faber Castell Pitt Graphite, Staedtler Mars Lumograph, Blackwing, and Musgrave Tennessee Red Round. The Tennessee Rounds are so beautiful. I don't know about all of you but I don't use my premium colored pencils to sketch out designs. I use my old broken or otherwise useless pencils for that, then I do a drawing in graphite before I do a full colored pencil drawing. If you do all that background work with your premium colored pencils, you use it up quicker. I'm too stingy and frugal for that.
