Hi Kori I know this is a 2 year old video now, but I bought myself the 48 set on Friday to see what they were like (blame Rebecca at The Art Spirits). The pricing is all over the place in the UK right now. The 150 set is a great price - £1 a pencil. But I can't afford £150 right now. The only other set with a reasonable price was the 48 at just over £1.10 per pencil. They arrived yesterday. I really like them. They feel great. I'm a person who loves the idea of Prismacolor but rarely uses them because I am not a smooshy colourist, I'm a layering colourist. But the fragility of them and the price over here in the UK is high and so I keep them safe and hardly use them! These Chromaflow are probably the softest pencil I have other than the Prisma. The colours are lovely and they lay down well in the book I'm currently using them in, Rita Berman's Meine Reise durch Europa. I'm not so precious about the price because open stock is available. I can see them could become a favourite. I wish the barrels were thicker though. My fingers can't work out how to hold such a slim pencil. My thumb nail is digging into my index finger! So I would very much like the 150 set and will be adding it to my Christmas list in hope that Father Christmas is good to me. But I also want that new Castle Arts set of Harmonious colours so they are on the list too. Depending on how many of the pale neutrals the 150 set contains (my favourite Prismas are the Clay Rose, salmon area of the pallet) I think that Harmonious set would enhance it nicely. Thanks for all you do and have done for the community over the years. Without people like you we would all be in the dark as far as supplies go.

Some interesting colors in the selection. Are they light fast . I have cherry picked the light fast ones from prismacolor and love them.
@ColorfullyOptimistic2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! So, right now, they don't have lightfast ratings listed. Their chart doesn't specify the 72 and even the old chart for the 24 doesn't have any ratings listed. I don't know if they've finished their Blue Wool testing or not. Honestly, the Chromaflow have been one of the oddest releases from Derwent. They just toss them out there and not a lot of info either haha. Right now, I'd say they probably are going to end up closer to Prisma in lightfast ratings, but hopefully they release the full documentation soon. Their site does not mention them being lightfast, so I think they were aiming more for the creamy core.

Heya Kori😀 I did get the 72 set, after having the 24 set for a year. On some points I agree with you, and some I don't. The gold and silver is a waste. Because Derwent already have a metallic set, that you can buy or even buy them singles, as they also are sold open stock. So the silver and gold, makes no sense to me. On the other hand, I think the color range is very good. Also for different tones of skin. I also thought the 24 set was very good put together. Only thing I missed in that, was more greys. For being a 24 set, it worked very well on the go for me. But preferred color range is a personal choice. And frankly the 72 set, gives me the variety to do what I want. So I am pleased with my set. 😀 Of course I'd love to have more colors. But I always want more colors 😂 Looking forward to the full review. Thank you for sharing your thoughts 💜
@ColorfullyOptimistic2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do wish they used those two slots for something else rather than the metallics. In a 72 count set, you are already low on colors, and honestly this is the first time I've seen Derwent add those. Look at the others, like coloursoft, Procolour, etc. Those don't have metallics, because like you said, they have their own metallic stand alone anyway. It's okay you don't agree with me my dear :).

As I am coloring with my Budget set.. hahaha. Got my Castle Arts out, doing a color along with a friend. I do have the 72 Chromoflow on the way. I am anxious to get them. I noticed, with the 24 set, I had 2 pencils that constantly broke. They were definitely off center. So I agree, Derwent can join Prismacolor in that club with these Chromoflow. I do like the feel of them though. I also like that they compliment the Caran D'ache Luminance (which is probably the only set, outside of derwent, lacking in purples!! Come on guys!) as well as the rest of the Derwent line. I like them. I have drawers emptied and waiting for mine. LOL
@ColorfullyOptimistic2 жыл бұрын
Yeah there are some off-center issues here, which made me laugh only because well, Prisma does too. Although, I love Prisma to death and never hold it against them. But, for the price, I'm expecting Derwent to shine a lot mroe. Yes, they can definitely join the Prismacolors, although there are not a ton of unique colors in comparison to Prisma so they will only fill in a few gaps :(. Derwent is notorious for lacking on the purples, which really sucks.

@@ColorfullyOptimistic Happy Mother's Day! They are $94 on Amazon today but I am ordering them for even cheaper at Blicks!
@wendyscolouring2 жыл бұрын
I've had my 72 set for a few weeks, now and overall I do like them (they make more financial sense in the Uk, as Prismas are so pricey here) I would agree, if you are trying to use only this set alone, they are still missing colours that make using them a bit tricky. I found myself missing green shades, (I thought there seemed a few, but many aren't the kind of green you need IYKIM) I like the texture of them, but agree they aren't quite as soft as Prisma. They definitely need a pallet of lighter paler tones, in most colour areas. They work well with Prismas though, and both brands together is probably how I will use them at the moment. I doubt at the moment in the US they will make much sense as a product yet, they will be more expensive than Prismas and not enough colours yet. In the rest of the world, that might be a different story, Derwent is available in shops world wide, in a way Prisma just isn't. Even here in the Uk, I can't walk into any art store to buy a Prisma, they just aren't stocked, (No authorised distributor) so Derwents offering makes a lot of sense for us, and many other places. Totally agree the price is too high yet, but stock availability is low at the moment, so that will keep prices high. I think they are a step in the right direction, but we still need more yet. (Ive also been using them with my procolurs, and they work well with them as well, Balancing hard/fine with larger areas, you want softer texture for.) 👍
@ColorfullyOptimistic2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Totally agree in the UK these are going to make a lot of sense, while in the US Prismacolor are just wayyyyy too cheap in comparison and offer so many more colors that these will not compare. Curious though, since you've had yours for a bit, did you have the off centered cores like I did? Some breakage? I mean my Prismas do that, but honestly I'm surprised that would come from Derwent.
@wendyscolouring2 жыл бұрын
@@ColorfullyOptimistic Hiya, Yes I've got a couple of off centred ones. I'd guess over time they will sort it, as I'm guessing they won't be happy with that. I wonder if it's because they are so narrow that makes this more likely to happen, Im guessing there is less tolerances, in something so thin. I didn't notice this in my small sets, so perhaps scaling up production has caused some issues? I did have one that was broken, but it did sharpen in the end. (however, I live about two hours from the factory, so its not like it can really be traveling damage!😉) I wish they had made these pencils thick like their normal brands, I don't really enjoy this thin barrel, and clearly it causing some issues. I'm guessing they think its more Prisma like?
@ColorfullyOptimistic2 жыл бұрын
@@wendyscolouring I agree that I wish these were thick. I like their chunky style, and it can't be a "cost" thing because what they are charging for these is more than their other pencils with that signature barrel size. I did get off centers with the Coloursoft, but none of my other Derwent products. My Lightfast, Inktense, and Procolourhave always been just fine. I didn't like that these were off center especially for that price though :(

TFS, I like the colors but I’ll wait until the price goes down. I pay less than $80 for 150ct of Prismacolor. I know I can wait for a better deal. Their 72 ct of Coloursoft and Procolour are cheaper. I’ve got to admit, I have most of their sets. And I love my Derwent Supplies 🥴😉

Oh I too love Derwent. But, yes, I agree, that price needs to shift downward. They are just new and shiny and demand is high so the price is high too :)

I’m going to have to finish this video during lunch, but I have to say, so far I’m not very impressed with the range of skin tones in this set! Too many bright colors for me as I prefer neutrals. It does seem like these are the derwent version of prismacolor though..

Yeah they are definitely trying to compete with Prisma, but sadly, they are lacking some serious colors, including skin tones. I will have to supplement with mine to make it work, but I did have those quality issues too. So, they really need to work on getting that price stabilized if they are going to charge that much and have those flaws ha

@@ColorfullyOptimistic I just finished it now. I guess layering would work, but some of the base colors we are given here aren’t great! As you said, maybe they’re still waiting to release a bigger set. I definitely wouldn’t want to buy any pencils that aren’t available open stock (maybe they will be soon) just because there’s certain colors I go through quickly!

@@AlexisCassandraArt yea that's why I'm holding off on my final review until I see what the open stock will be like. I mean if you asked me to pick these or prismacolor I'd still go prismacolor lol

I am not a fan of them so I wouldn't pay that lol.

Metallic pencils are a waste. Any half decent pencil artist can make metallic colour using gradients. I'd much rather have an extra white and black.

Yes, I prefer to color my metallic myself, so I totally get that.t.
