Tombow Irojiten Colored Pencils Review

I have the complete 90 set (the 3 box sets which are cool looking but not exactly practical when using the pencils) and they are so precious to me. I use them only with the Kum Blackwing long point sharpener. However, you cannot use these like soft-colored pencils and expect similar results. Irojiten pencils are for layering and layering and layering and fine detail - you shouldn't be trying to burnish the paper after just 2 layers. I get annoyed at how many people complain about Irojiten after using only soft-core pencils. I don't like the neons much, but honestly they are still the best neon colored pencils I've ever seen. It's just really difficult to manufacture pencils with those kinds of pigments. I really like the picture you colored

+Heather Leisure, glad to hear you enjoy the Irojeten pencils so much. You are right...they really do love to layer! You may be right about needing more layers before burnishing, but the purpose of the worksheet is to perform a consistent set of tests to every brand of pencils so that consistent/measurable results can be achieved. It is a lofty goal when we are talking about comparing pencils with such vastly different qualities. But...most people need a place to begin their journey in learning about these awesome art tools and that is what I am attempting to provide. Thanks for watching.

I really, really need the tranquil set. I love the lighter colors and always seem to have a hard time when coloring with wishing a color was just a bit lighter in the areas I want a lighter tone. I really like the way you color the cute little bird and it is really helpful watching you pick colors for particular parts of a drawing. I've been trying to work on color selection lately. I like the way these are put into color palette sets. The color on the pencils are close enough to the true color of the pencil. I find that this helps my club members choose the colors for their pictures. Even though you were limited with the colors you had to work with; I liked how you showed us to "Think outside the box". This set did not come with an orange you made do with what you had. I can't wait to share this pencil set with our coloring club. Thanks for your review!

I actually got 100 (sale price too) ....I got the 3 boxes of 30 and there was a little pack of a bonus 10 pencils. I haven't heard anyone else getting this it's always been 90 so not sure how I snagged that little bonus (just purchased them from Amazon) but super happy I did! I found the fluorescents quite scratchy and harder to get a good amount of pigment out of (just in relation to your blending test) but layering is amazing. Love this video btw very interesting and helpful so tyfs. I'm going to see if you have others now lol

Loving the tombow brand, this 2 sets seem pretty nice, and i love the fact that it comes with a specialized eraser and a sharpener, (although i use my trusty KUM automatic long point sharpener, i totally recommend it), Great review!

I've used Tombow markers in the past, I wasn't even aware that they made colored pencils. The markers were perfect for my scrapbooking and I'd love to try their colored pencils. This was very helpful and informative!

I have found the sanded eraser in a pencil which can be sharpened to a fine point and cut to a very sharp angle is good for corrections and overruns or accidents in my calligraphy/art

When you pencil's axis is slanted to that of the sharpener, you may want to turn the pencil and and not the sharpener.

They are just gorgeous colours. Tranquils are often harder to find. I got Holbeins to get pastel shades so these would be great to add to the ones I have already.

Faber castell has a sanded eraser in sharpened pencil format with a brush on the end. Very good for watercolour splash removal and edge crisping cleanup for paint, ink or crayons. I find my long point vertical electric eraser works super well on good quality wide core pencils with no stress on the core and it never breaks cores…and i don’t have breakage issues..during colouring…also a very large catcher for all the sharpening mess. Great fire starter if you are interested..in using the sharpenings again…

Hey Jennifer I have a idea to a video😊 I would love to see a video very you are testing and review out all or some of blender pencils. I find it hard to find one, where there isn’t a grey or muddy color look.. Hope you understand what I meant. And it was an idea😉 I would like too now have Prismacolor’s or koh I noor’ blender works.. I curious about the black test. Wouldn't printing a black square ruin the tooth of the paper, so the paper is harder to use colored pencils on? I know when artist use non-white paper it's dyed not printed.

Hi: If I understand you correctly, you are saying the 12 colours in each set are new and not in the original 90 in the dictionary sets. I went and checked... they are all in the original 90 set (or to be precise, in the 3 sets of 30.) So, these are NOT new colours. I just about went and purchased them on amazon thinking they were new, but luckily I checked the colours listed and checked with the official colour lists.

Intresting! You are the first person I have ever seen turning the sharpener rather than the pencil to sharpen. Is that a technique to save the pencil?

+Nic4ever, you guessed it! It works great! Takes a little practice to get used to it, but it really helps to hold those pencils still and move the sharpener around core.
