This is by far the best tutorial, example to follow etc that I’ve ever seen on anything from Lost Ocean/Romantic Country. 95% of all the others had really ghastly background music (one particular one had Adagio G by Albinone - what I call “The Ultimate Funeral Song” on repeat for the entire 1+ hours of the colouring/speed colouring, I had to mute it), the person doesn’t explain what they’re doing or how to get the effect they managed to get on some of the more complex parts of their colouring. And I’ve looked at a LOT of these over the past few days, trying to find something that did not have background music (my thoughts on that are that if I wanted background music whilst watching someone speed drawing something for over an hour, that I’ll choose my own music) and the person did not explain in any way what they were doing. Your video here is amongst only a few KZbins -out of hundreds that i sat through/fast forwarded that you actually explain what you’re doing and is actually extremely helpful. So yay! 😁 This is a great video! I’m subscribing to you just on this video alone cos it’s so good and it really is extremely hard to find anything like what I was looking for. So thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. It’s extremely helpful 🙏 ♥️ from Australia 🇦🇺

Hello Alena, this is not for beginners, maybe you think of beginner paintings, but believe me that I know a lot of people who think they are great and that they are not over them, but they would not have done this for nothing. Your creations and use of colors are absolutely perfect and I like all your paintings. Continue on to work. I am your faithful listener and I love everything you create :) ♥ I apologize for the bad translation, I used the translator

How do you get your books to open so nicely? Could you make a video on how to do that?
@ColoringwithAlena
@ColoringwithAlena 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I have no idea--ability to open fully and to lay flat depends only from the quality of binding. Here I use Ukrainian edition and it easy lays flat. Usually when I start to color in the new book with tight binding I put something heavy on the edges of pages and after some time book is adjusted to lay more flat

Hi Alena! What are you using to apply the pastels..? And it that a box cutter you're using to make shavings from the pastel stick?
@ColoringwithAlena

Usually I use paper stumps, they look like this amzn.to/3GVs5EM , some manufacturers make them harder, some - softer, in various sizes, so it's convenient to do backgrounds even around very intricate images. And I use the most simple and cheap stationery knife like this amzn.to/3AViBFI (sorry I'm not sure what is box cutter, probably the same thing)

Can you tell me what pencil is this?

All picture colored with Faber-Castell Eco and Marco Renoir Aquarelle pencils. For the white lines on the background I used Marco Renoir, but you could use any white or pale blue. Dry pastels doesn't stick to any pencils.

Thank you Alena. I just loved this technique of colouring the background. I have Lost Ocean with me and haven't yet tried this technique with dry pastels before. I look forward to more of your colouring videos.

Thank you for sharing your "beams of light" technique. As another commenter wrote, I too have difficulty selecting colors, let alone thinking to add details like bubbles or making changes to fish patterns. It's a pleasure seeing your work. I was surprised you buffed your pastel over the pencil colors. I could not detect a change in the colors. Is that due to your brand of pencil? I use Faber Castell Polychromos pencils, which are oil based so the colors are blendable. (I cannot view your answer to Udita re the pencil brand.) Or is it your choice of pastels? I was going to get Pan Pastels: www.panpastel.com/about.html If you think the reason your pencil colors are not affected by the pastels because of the pastel brand you use, what is the brand? Final question: What is the brand name of your white pen, and what is the point or tip size?

Thank you for watching and for your kind words! For this picture I used cheap wax based Faber-Castel Eco pencils and Marco Renoir watercolour pencils, budget Mygyo soft pastels (it's Korean brand). I never have any changes in colored areas if I applied pastels over it. In the beginning I covered all areas with Derwent Burnisher to add some kind of wax cover, but then I saw a great video of Peta Hewitt. She demonstrated that even over the pencils layer there will be no changes in colour. Sorry for my explanation and for my English. Just watch great video of Peta, she will explain better : kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5yalK1ura6je7M

Coloring with Alena I appreciate your quick response and for patiently answering all my questions. I saw the Peta Hewitt video too. I tend not to press hard when I color and I think she explained the pastels didn't affect the pencil colors in one sample when she pressed hard on the paper. When she applied a blending pencil to another sample, it provided a protective layer. I'm guessing by the time you finish blending your pencil colors (with or without a blending pencil?), they are impervious to pastels. And that's why your images are beautiful. Not only do you have an eye for color but you know how to layer the colors. I have a blender pencil but never knew about burnishing until you told me. My Faber Castell Polychromos pencils are oil-based, not wax-based, so a protective layer of blender and/or burnish will, I think, be necessary if I am to take the big step into pastels. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work and for your generous advice.

You're welcome! Unfortunately I don't own any oil-based pencils so I can't test them with soft pastels. Anyway I think burnisher will help to keep your picture shiny and clear.
