Cat Power needs to be much more treasured. This song is one of many reasons for that.

Thank you all for the kind words. My neighbor was thrilled to find all his old Super 8's and wanted me to see the quality of film back in the day. After watching, I was sucked into his story, so beautiful and personal.

This is one of those songs I feel like I could live inside. It's incredible that it's not even one of her most popular songs. 'And you could say my name Like you knew my name' 'It's so hard to go in the city Cause you wanna say hello to everybody It's so hard to go into the city Because you wanna say hey, I love you to everybody' When you've felt those feelings those lines hit hard

Colors and the Kids makes me remember many very different and unrelated people that I have lost along the way. The beach, the shack, January nights, and Yellow Bear. I wonder what's become of them.

most unbelievably raw and emotionally moving song I've ever heard. inextricably linked to my development as a human being. you can hear her soul in the vocals

This video is so gorgeous, and this is one of my favorite songs ever, plan to sing it or play it at my wedding here in a few weeks and this video just captures everything that this song embodies the beautiful carefree simplicity of being completely inlove with someone, really beautiful brought tears to my eyes.

"Colors And The Kids" It must be the colors And the kids That keep me alive 'Cause the music is boring me to death It must just be the colors And the kids that keep me alive 'Cause I wanna go ride away To a January night Built a shack with an old friend He was someone I could learn from Someone I could become Will you meet me down On a sandy beach We can roll up our jeans So the tide won't get us below the knees Yellow hair You are a funny bear Yellow hair You are such a funny bear Slender fingers Would hold me slender limbs would hold me And you could say my name Like you knew my name I could stay here Become someone different I could stay here Become someone better It's so hard to go in the city 'Cause you wanna say hello to everybody It's so hard to go into the city 'Cause you wanna say hey I love you to everybody When we were teenagers we wanted to be the sky Now all we wanna do is go to red places And try to stay outta hell It must be the colors And the kids That keep me alive 'Cause the music is boring me to death it must just be the colors And it must just be the kids That keep me alive on this January night. Yellow hair You are a funny bear Yellow hair You are such a funny bear

I work for a company that transfers old super 8 film to DVD. I get such a kick outta those old movies, sans Disney World/Land. Instant time machines they are and make going to work a bit easier. This video does the same thing for me, thank you very much for it.

maybe because becoming someone else involves losing yourself, also it sounds like she is taking their place, perhaps they are moving away or maybe die soon.

feel like this song is about changing your mind about committing suicide. "it's so hard to go in the city, cos you wanna say hello i love you to everybody" feels like when you see the people you love, your mind changes and you embrace life.

I take that line differently. Maybe it’s because I suffer from social anxiety, but it sounds like she wants to connect with people but something inside her is in the way. 🤷🏻♂️ i could be totally offbase.

As a kid I grew up in a village in the country, but by the time I was a 18 i wanted to see more of the world, so I moved to ‘the big city’ (after a period as a hitchhiker). imho this line is exactly what it says- it took me a while to get used to people glaring at me, instead of like-for-like responding when continuing my old ways of saying hi to them as i passed them in the street. So to me: It’s about the loss of friendliness and positivity between strangers, that sense of we’re all in this together vs me against you. Anyway, truly fantastic album that pierces my heart still to this day, melancholy at its softest, most rapturous serene best.

@@taffysaurYes. I take in a similar way. For me the narrator is relaying how lost and overwhelmed she feels when tagging along with her partner, who has an easy charm and just gets on with everybody. He just doesn't understand how hard it is for her to be around others and how cut off from the world she feels. Hello from the UK by the way (!) I saw Chan/Cat Power two nights ago in Manchester and I've been playing her old songs non-stop since (which alas, she didn't perform many of).
