May be the best video I've seen on the coliseum. Always wondered what all those holes n the walls were for. It's a shame those buildings didn't survive the earthquakes and the scavengers. Fascinating to see they even used arches on stairs. Excellent video Mike.

That technique of pouring lead plugs for cast iron brackets was still in use up until at least the victorian age and probably until around 50 years ago, at least in th UK. My house (built 1870) has a garden wall and my gate still hangs on those style brackets! Most houses in my town do too.

I love your videos Mike! I'm addicted to them. I know it maybe time consuming and you probably just want to enjoy your vacay, if I may humbly make a suggestion, and I by no means or stretch of the imagination, am I telling you how to shoot your videos. My suggestion is don't rush the scenes. I personally enjoy your commentary and professional eye on these videos. What you point out and your opinion is gold! Some of us are not masons, unfortunately, and hearing you lay out the process those masons took to accomplish the work at hand is fascinating. I respect you and I apologize if I may have offended you. That wasn't my intent. Also, I know you mentioned in other videos that you moved to Florida, beautiful and wonderful state by the way, full of wonderful and kind people. @@MikeHaduck im right where you used to work up here. need a real old stone masons advice. its a 120+ huge fireplace. the slab is supported by a inch and a half on every edge but unsupported in the middle. its 4ft wide by 3 1/2ft deep with a pit that big underneath. im thinking cut slab out in small pieces then put steel angles on edges where slab used to rest and weld a grate across to use as reienforcement. then pour portland,sand, and quikwall for fiber in it. after raise the hearth by a refractory brick layer. anyway thats my plan i think atm it needs to support the weight plus its in my living room with the little ones running about. something has to be done with it.

I always wondered, the pockmarks are because looters took the iron tie rods that were meant for structural support. But if that happened in the Dark Ages, and the Colosseum is still standing without the tie rods, then I guess they were never necessary.

Cool. Thanks Mike. No one I'd rather see a video about the Colosseum from. The Getty Museum in Los Angeles is travertine. You probably already know that travertine is made by hot springs bubbling up into terraces, like at Mammoth Hot Springs at Yellowstone NP. The calcium is left behind as the water evaporates. They're all over the world. I visited another one in Yunnan, China. There are some in Turkey. You can kind of guess why the Arch of Titus was 'quarried' only so much. Any more and that arch would've pushed out and collapsed. Whether they didn't want to take it all, or they didn't want it to crush them when it collapsed, who's to say? If you visit Hadrian's Wall (again. I'm sure you've been) stop at the Steel Rig parking lot and look at the farm stone walls. Best ones in the country. Constructed from scavenged cut stone from the wall.

Mike that stonework is all rendered with quicklime mortar. If you go meet Nigel in York he can show you Roman baths, built with pure lime. This is silly as usual. Romans kept great records no need to speculate on anything.

@@MikeHaduck while you are there; please take note of all the normal houses and structures over 500 years old.. they use lime hotmixed mortar. 1:2 ratio at the minimum never leaner
@MikeHaduck2 ай бұрын
@@KurtisHord hi Kurtis, I was over Europe years ago and was doing a video on all the lime mixtures, I never put it out because nobody over here uses it, it's either mortar and Portland and the mixtures in between, I think what happend was it never held up in our area so it was abandoned years ago, although I did do jobs in Southern New Jersey where they added lime to the Portland, also a rule of thumb is masonry last longer where palm trees flounder, thanks Mike
@KurtisHord2 ай бұрын
@@MikeHaduck what you think is wrong. The mortar that you accuse of “not holding up” in Pa was made in the 1800s, much of it using pozzolanic materials to give it hydraulic properties. This is how we identify well built structures from earlier periods than 1800s. We look for signs of hot mixing quicklime and a mix never leaner than 1:2. It works in Pennsylvania, Canada, St. Petersburg, the walls of Jerusalem. If you use “roman” methods and chemistry for mortars and concretes you get long lasting masonry structures. The methods are not Roman through: there is evidence in every building culture for 6000 years of quicklime production and deep understanding of mineral binders made in a kiln
@KurtisHord2 ай бұрын
Mike you can find more examples of survival than of failure, with correct hot mixed mortar: shaker village in New York. Surviving without a roof for over a century now. Colonial Williamsburg of course…. The old whole old city of Boston, and Charleston. All brick or stone all pushing 300 years or more all using hot mixed mortars, in cases where the structure survived past 200 years
