I was a child when they came off my guess is around 1964 or 65, I know my parents were quite happy about, it's also why people object quite a bit to the idea of any toll implemented on it again

Chris Buck. Good comment. The tolls were taken off the Lions Gate Bridge in 1963. WAC Bennett was the premier and always applied tolls on the premise that when the project was paid for, then the tolls would come off. He was astute enough to fulfill those promises right before elections; and in so doing, it helped the Social Credit Party win their fair share in the Greater Vancouver electoral ridings.

My Dad commuted to downtown every day from our new home in West Van. He'd buy these cards - a bit larger than a playing card, perhaps? - and most of it was covered in little rectangles. Each represented a trip across the Lions Gate, and was more convenient, and cost less, than coming up with change twice a day. The toll booth operators had tools like hand-held hole punchers, but they cut away one rectangle instead. As a five-year-old, I found it fascinating!

That point in the video where there are only 3 cars on the bridge. Quite a different story today.

Now I get it why there is a flat area in the nortshore, because buildig a road wouldn't need that wide flat area for construction.
