People of color are the offspring of European fathers and African slaves who were taken from various African countries that had been colonized by white people. They were brought to countries like Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Malaysia, and some were eventually returned to South Africa where they became slaves among the local population. Many of these slaves did not speak any of the South African languages and therefore adopted Afrikaans as their primary language. Their masters gave them new identities and surnames, much like how slaves in America took on their masters' last names. The children born to these mixed-race couples were often told they were from Malaysia or Europe, leading them to grow up identifying as colored rather than black due to their European heritage. However, issues arise when they try to claim descent from the indigenous Khoikhoi people, even though there is no evidence of colored people existing before 1652. Unlike native Americans who have retained their language and traditions, and Africans who have preserved their history and languages, colored people seem to have lost theirs. This raises questions about how this happened if they are truly descendants of these cultures. In countries like Botswana and Namibia, where there was less colonization by Europeans, people of color still speak their native languages and use their ancestors' last names instead of adopting European ones like De Klerk, Williams, or Smit.

It is unfortunate that some Coloureds know so little about their own people. Coloureds are not only Cape and Joburg Coloureds. There are also Coloureds in KZN, Free State, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Mpumalanga. In fact, every Province in South Africa has multiple Coloured neighbourhoods. Eden Park is only one of them found in the Gauteng Province. Also, Cape Coloureds are not only "Indian mixed." Coloureds everywhere in South Africa have various mixes. Not only Indian. Some have no Indian admixture whatsoever. Actually, Coloured people in KZN are much more likely to have more Indian admixture because of the high population of Indians in that Province. Also, Coloureds don't have one black parent and one white parent. Coloured people are not biracial. Coloured people are multi generationally mixed(MGM) people, meaning that coloured people come from mixed parents who come from other mixed parents who come from other mixed parents and it goes back many generations. Very few Coloureds are recently mixed. Also, one Coloured family is mixed very differently compared to the next Coloured family. The one thing that unifies Coloured people regardless of which community or Province they live in is Coloured culture. Moreover, 95 percent of Coloured people speak Afrikaans as a first language, but they can speak English as well. It is only Coloureds from KZN who do not speak Afrikaans. Afrikaans is essentially a combination of Dutch, Khoisan dialects, and other indigenous Bantu South African languages. KZN Coloureds speak English as a first language, but also Zulu. You were in the heart of one of the Coloured communities today. I commend your willingness to go. A lot of people just avoid it altogether for their own reasons.

Isn’t it more dangerous than the other hoods?
@elroyswarts2337Ай бұрын
@@gagoomt4076Some Coloured neighborhoods are more dangerous than others depending on the seasons when rival gangs take each other out. Sometimes they are at peace. Other times they engage in active gang wars. That doesn't happen very often but when it does, the only real danger is being an innocent bystander when the fighting starts. Coloured people are generally just fun loving people who really won't mind hanging out with you and making sure you have a good time. They are far more likely to kill fight or un alive each other over some gang related issue than they would ever hurt someone coming in from the outside and befriending them. As long as there is respect shown. Going to a coloured neighborhood to blatantly disrespect Coloureds is a big NO. Since you mention Ethiopia, some of the ancestry of Coloured people does also include East Africans. East Africans were also brought to South Africa as slaves together with Malaysians, Indonesians, Mauritians, Madagascans, Angolans, and Mozambicans. All of those groups form part of the ancestry of Coloured people in South Africa.

Coloureds are the second largest ethnic group in South Africa. That's after black people who form about 80 percent of the total population of South Africa. The identity of "colored" people in South Africa is incredibly complex and layered. I grew up in a colored neighborhood, with a father who was colored and a mother who was Zulu, and Afrikaans was the only language I spoke. In my early twenties, I began reconnecting with my African roots, especially my Zulu heritage through my mother. Once I understood the history behind why colored people spoke Afrikaans-how it was imposed on them by the Afrikaners, not to communicate with Africans or the indigenous Khoi and San, but to suppress their ability to speak their native languages-I stopped speaking Afrikaans. This historical context also explained why many colored people from the Cape area, for instance, are missing their two front teeth: it was a method used to prevent them from making the clicking sounds found in African languages. This form of social control by the Afrikaners had a deep, lasting impact on the colored community. As I began embracing IsiZulu and learning their culture, I noticed a shift in my relationship with my father's side of the family. It was as if there were unspoken expectations, similar to how Black Americans are often pressured to fit a "hood" stereotype to maintain their "Black card." In South Africa, it felt as if you had to hold onto your "colored card" when stepping beyond your immediate community. The broader Black population, too, often perpetuates this dynamic. What I'm trying to express is that the colored community is not a monolith. It includes anyone who fits into the "colored" category; however, acknowledging that anyone can be classified as "colored" is often taboo. But in reality, people from various backgrounds-Indians, Europeans, Asians, Latinos, and even Palestinians-can be considered colored. This fluidity in identity is one reason why many Black South Africans "turned colored" in the 1980s to escape the harsh realities of apartheid, including arrest and persecution. At its core, the term "colored" is not just about race; it’s about history, survival, and a deeply entrenched social construct that has shaped lives in ways often misunderstood by those outside the community. Before 1948, we were all "black"...

Wow, I love that you are doing these videos. This is next level from an American influencer on our shores. As a Zulu South African, the concept of coloured has always been very difficult for me to grasp. That is partly because the understanding of what it means to be coloured can vary so much depending on which coloured person you speak to. So politically, I am classified as black but that is an identity assigned to us by outsiders. I am a Zulu South African, and as far as I am concerned that is the end of it. Most of my "black" neighbours in the Eastern Cape are Xhosa, and as you start traveling further north in the country you will encounter Sotho, Swati, Tswana, Pedi, Venda, Ndebele, and Tsonga. So, just to be clear, this is in no way a critique, I am just highlighting why it is so difficult for some of us to grasp the concept of a coloured culture. And it often feels like some people who identify as coloured aren't entirely sure either. Nevertheless, coloured women are absolute goddesses. I can never get over how beautiful, strong, and loyal they are. African Queens my bru!

5:00 At around the 5-minute mark I started hoping and praying that this video is gonna somehow get better. I am now 20 minutes in... As a person who falls within the Coloured Population Group (which by every definition of how racial identities have been established, for the fact that we are so very mixed, Coloured is Not a Race, but a Cultural Identity) and having visited and in some cases even embedded myself in Coloured communities all over South Africa, I am worried that the superficial descriptions of Coloured people as given by Miss Charnie will be seen as the reality for most Coloured People. An example is the daft misleading stereotype of Cape Coloureds not having any front teeth (which is far from a statistical majority among Cape Town Coloureds ). I am also pretty sure that the entire population in Eden Park do not all drink beer or Black Label for that matter, and Jackson only happened to meet a bunch of drinkers. I hope everyone watching will understand that Eden Park i not a representative microcosm of a population group of around 6 Million People spread across the country that all have their own unique characteristics but also have huge similarities in their lived experiences. Please keep watching this video with the mindset that while Coloured Communities across the country are all somewhat alike, they are also very much not the same. If this is the Only video about Coloured people you have ever watched, you have to watch a whole lot more from different local and international content creators who will give you a more of a balanced perspective.

Usually black ppl in South Africa belong to a tribe, with tribal customs & a tribal language. Some coloured people don’t know the details of their generational lineage. Also, some coloured people aren’t denying black ancestors but genuinely can’t claim black South African heritage as they could be descended from Malaysian or Indian slaves mixed with white etc. It’s one of the reasons, coloureds can look white with blue eyes & blonde hair and another look Chinese, and another black. Some of us don't do this family at all as they don't drink at all, some of us do this only on special occasions e.g. birthdays, some of us do this every weekend with friends. We all don't have the same street culture too, you'll get a completely different Coloured community experience in every area/city/province of South Africa, many factors contribute to this that's how multifaceted and complexed our Coloured communities are.

Coloureds are the second largest ethnic group in South Africa. That's after black people who form about 80 percent of the total population of South Africa. You mentioned the Irish and Italians in comparison; do you realize that the Italian and Irish cultures and perspectives were not impacted by decades/centuries of slavery and or apartheid? I have been to 26 different countries and presently live in Africa. Many countries I visited were affected by colonization and freed within the last 70 years. I enjoy learning about people, their cultures, and how they gained independence in my travels. How are coloureds marginalised or which race in SA is marginalising coloureds ? Mind you one of the guys mentioned that you still refer to some coloureds as Bushpigs because they are close to black. BUt its clearly normalised in that community because none of the coloureds listening to him called him out. Then you claim to be oppressed by blacks smh Tyla has black friends , embraces her Zulu heritage , does black dances and I doubt she would call anyone a Bushpig.
@mm536836 күн бұрын
@@dinaledi4085 That is utterly disgusting behaviour and unacceptable, they will meet the wrath of God, demeaning others like that. It is also not a true reflection of the whole Coloured culture. You may have to read again "struggles within our political systems". Sounds like you may also be out of tuned with reality in this country. It's subtle institutional racism and oppression not by citizens by government, the same goverment that promised Coloured and Indians rights and equal opportunities as their own race but come post apartheid and they turn out to be the exact oppressors, colonisers and apartheid government was. Can't blame you if you haven't heard of this, its done very sinisterly and main media. You may never know how it feels to have your CV thrown in the bin and be told this jon is for a Black person only, in this day and age still, especially as a young Coloured people its been done to. The whole amendment to Employment Equity Act is a subtle way of being racist, prohibiting minority non-Black people equal opportunies. So ask yourself why does leading government still insist of these race contructs and racial checkboxes when it's not serving the people well, it no longer serves a purpose, only to their own racist agendas. It's giving that they have hidden agendas. Same as when they just used the Indian and Coloured vote since 1994 to just get into power, only to throw them under the bus few years later. I will not be manipulated by a person in power just because they are the same colour skin or race as me, people need to wake up and realise who truly is consistently creating a division between races in South Africa. Apartheid government planted lies into people's heads and post apartheid government just happily continuing.

@@imdee9024 Scared of what? She's only describing certain Coloured people in underprivileged areas, no difference to what a South African from a Black, white or Indian underprivileged community will do as soon as they get taste of money that they never had for most their lives. That description she made isn't specific to Coloured people behaviour or work ethic it's a general human behaviour, so your question makes no sense. Come to Cape Town the place that Joburgers arrogantly call "slaapstad" and see what true worth ethic looks like, we work as hard as we party and we leave no stone unturned. I can't account for those that take advantage of their jobs because that behaviour exists in all races but that truly isn't how our Coloured parents grandparents raised us, if anything you'll be doing your family a disgrace to take your job for granted and your family will hold you accountable because you are. There is a political agenda to marginalize Coloured people to not get progress in life, ANC don't even have to say it and keep us oppressed because the misconceptions that Coloured people were better off than Black people still prevails in society but this is no way to try to create equality, by taking bread crumbs out of one community to feed the other while you as a person in power in this country, has pockets full of money. That's the evil we have to face in this country. They didn't implement the Employment Equity Bill for nothing, there's a hidden agenda of cause and ploy to conceal their racism. It's like you can become better but not better than me kind of mentality from the government.
