Welcome! In this tutorial we're teaching you how to paint coloured metallics, we're breaking it down and making it SUPER SIMPLE, you can even do this AFTER YOUR MODEL HAS BEEN 'FINISHED' SILVER! This tutorial is packed with painting tips and tricks, so you can turn whatever Warhammer 40K or AOS model you like ANY COLOUR, NOT JUST BLUE!
Not only are we testing how to use CONTRAST OVER METALLICS, we're looking at using GLAZES, and SHADES, too. Finally, we look at adding 'normal' paint to our silver, and also combining all of the above, and giving you all the tools you need to understand why and how, and adapt to your heart's content.

So what I've found out at 12:12 is that you just need to get non-metallic base color and then dry-brush one coat of metallic on it to get perfect bluish metal without messing around washes and multi-layering

Viewers we'd LOVE your metallic preferences, products, tips, recipes, etc! Post them below, we'll copy the best ones into this comment for the community to use as a resource. What did you think of the video? Patrick Ball - Stone Junction: This is the kind of thing I love the contrast paints for, their ability to tint metallics is amazing. One thing I've used myself quite regularly is Talassar Blue contrast paint over a silver base coat and it gives a really beautiful metallic blue - normally my cheat power sword recipe is base coat Iron Warriors, drybrush Vallejo silver and thin coat of Talassar Blue and it gives a nice effect. Luis Gargallo: For really rusted look i use base: burnt umber + smoke ink, then sponge in this order: red leather, hull red, orange fire and plague brown then some metal colour like natural steel (all those from vallejo)

I like to use leadbelcher as a base then follow with 2 coats of basilicanum grey. Then highlight once again with leadbelcher. Gives a nice industrial feel to steel.

I'm building a Strormcast Eternals army and wanted a quick and effective dddddway of making them look dirty compared to all the celestial color schemes they normaly have. So I based them with Leadbelcher, followed up with an all covered wash of Agrax Earthshade and followed by Fuegan Orange for that rusty, yet unified look.

Great tips, definitely want to try some of these out! One more for consideration: I like to mix in an ink (in your color of choice - I use vallejo) with the silver color basecoat to tint the metallic from the very start. Seems to make it a bit easier to shade/highlight later on, and I feel like you get a little more intense color saturation. As always though, it just depends on the look you're after.

Honestly the best acrylic metallics i’ve ever used are the Vallejo Metal Colors, only downside is their availability. Their coverage and ease of application combined with the sheen they produce are second to none. They also take inks really well so you can create any metallic color you want without buying a bottle for each one
@ArtisOpus

Interesting dude, I've heard they didn't play well with other colours or blending. I guess this doesn't extend to inks though! 😊

After trying Vallejo Metal Color I use mostly them. And mix them with inks or apply contrast paints over them for coloring metallics. Inks give a glossy finish, whereas contrast paints give a more matte finish.

Speaking of Contrast/Glaze + Metallics, it's worth mentioning the various extra effects that you get when combining them with non-silver metallics, like gold (for example: Retributor Armour + Akhellian Green contrast). With some practice, you can achieve some really nice results.

So, one of the things I've been playing around with is a way of getting a super-patinaed bronze base color starting with GW Balthazar Gold and then washing with a cold green wash like Coelia Greenshade or similar. Something about the strong color temperature contrast between the base and the wash works. Instead of getting something muddy, there's a really interesting warm but muted green metal tone with bronze highlights out of it. Makes me want to try some other nominally contrasting washes on strongly colored metal bases.

For golds I use vmc bronze, then use a wash of the geedubs verdigris milk stuff😂 quick drybrush of the bronze again and a very subtly drybrush of auric gold

If you wanna have a real muddy effect on your miniatures specially the ones with armour like space marines, storm troopers maybe stormcast I would do the followin: First do some armour scratches with your silver of choice cause drawing random lines will mame your mini cool and it combines really well with the muddy effect . You will need Vallejo European Earth and Vallejo Pigment Binder ( you can use any binder o air brush thinner ) . Now you begin with showering really hard your miniatures and trying to have some of the pigment accumulate. Keep in mind even with the binder a lot of the pigment will fall before it gets nicely fixate so even if it seems to much pigment trust me it's allright. I reccomend you having some paper in your workzone so you can collect the pigment that fall s off the miniature. Now you can ham as well with the binder try avoid excesive pooling but don't get to concerned if it does pool it takes some days but it dries away eventually. A nice trick you can do if you are doing the base afterwards is accumulate the excesive pooling in one of the feets this will help you do a cool effect when you are adding your texture. I added stirland mud and when it finally dried the result was that in the pooled zone there was a little hole with some pigment in it and it contrasted really nice with the base. I ended up drybrushing some rakarth flesh and some tufs. It's just a really basic way of taking advantage of scratches and pigments to take some meh looking troopers to some cool ass unit but I hope someone can take advantatge of it.

Great video. How do you find that the Series D stands up to Metal paints. I’ve never tried dry brushing using your method with metal yet, but have long heard horror stories of metal paint eating nice brushes. Do you find that the life of the series D is shortened by the tiny razor blades within the paint?
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, dude! Surprisingly no actually😊because we don't encourage any paint to reach the ferrule of series D ever the metallics don't get into the most problematic areas and cause mischief. I do recommend sticking to high quality 'non-gritty' metallics but you should be fine with any acrylics really😊

great tutorial! what's the difference between the contrast & lamian mediums?
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 3 жыл бұрын
So I need to do some proper research into this, but for me it feels like they are very similar, perhaps with lahmian being better to use in washes you want to look super smooth (for some reason?). It could be because contrast is still meant to hit raised areas as a filter, whereas washes are meant to pool in recesses, with very little coverage on raised parts/minimal filtering. I hope that helps!

These shields look really cool, any of them would be a real talking point across a whole army, but if you really want to make metallics pop, hit them with a satin varnish! Gloss can make them look a little plasticy, but satin will give them a nice realistic sheen!

Not so great with a brush, but multiple coats using airbrush are good. I have a few, with a brush it's hard to manage pigmentation, it takes a while to build up.

@@ArtisOpus They have potential as a tint on other metallics too. One of my thoughts was for a sort of chimeric edge adding some turbodork to something like the vallejo blue metallic, to enhance a sort of magical quality to it. Otherwise adding it as a highlight colour for a coloured metallic could work. I'm quite interested in the new Army Painter metallic colours when they come out and mixing them with turbodork too.

I've tried to use Druchii Violet (shade) on Runefang Steel from GW however the shade really dulls down the metal. What am I doing wrong?
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 2 жыл бұрын
It may be a particular trait of Druchii, you could try a couple of things: - Varnish after (shine restored!) - Use a shinier metal base (I use Vallejo Game Air silver lots, they have chrome, aluminium, etc that are even brighter, though - Mix some medium with your violet, it'll make it more dilute Good luck :) You could also go back in and edge with your silver after, even with a little druchii in it for coherency

If you mix regular paints with Lahmium Medium in the right ratio you can achieve similar effects to the old Glaze paints. I think that Warhammer TV have a couple of videos where they did this very effectively (where I got the idea from) - can't recall on what off the top of my head.
