I have the 6601, still new in the box with the barrel wick in it. Back in 1989, Colt M16 NFA transferables were under $2000. What kept the prices in check after the 1986 registry closing, was the difficulty of securing the LEO form 4 signature. By the year 2000, they were in the $6000 range. Today, no signature is needed, so prices are in the $20-$50k range.. Thanks for sharing a great video..

I bought mine new in the green label box in late 89 in a free state. It is marked Colt AR15 A2 Hbar same sights, has a bayo lug but without all the pins but has the take down screw and without the block, or neutered carrier. It is a rifleman rifle and still love shooting it my 1981 A1 is the same but pencil barrel. I also bought the lightweight model pencil barrel green label without all blocks screws but sold it later. Bought a blue label Marked sporter carbine in 93 it is like yours (blocks no bayo and screw) , it was on clearance from colt, chambered in 7,62x39 because of Clinton stopping the importation of cheap Chinese 6 cent a round ammo.

Thanks for commenting! Sounds like Colt had sold different versions depending on the State they were sold in at the time. I know starting in "94" all the rifles had these nonsense features.

I also purchased one of these right before the ban. I had it out a couple of weeks back and I was reminded how accurate these were. I have kept mine all original. I know some people went in and ground down the sear block and changed the BCG out. Also have seen quite a few with Magoul on them and the owners got rid of the original parts. I have been quite happy with mine so I left it alone. I have plenty of other AR's that I can mess up.

A2's are making a comeback! They are being offered by Palmetto State Armory under their H&R brand. Rock River Arms also has them again and I believe Brownells just started offering them. Thank you for your video. Regarding 12:53, another scope that was available for the Colt AR-15 A2 Sporter HBAR rifle during the 1980's was the excellent Beeman Blue Ribbon SS2 4x21 Scope which could fit onto the mounting hole on the carrying handle of the AR-15. These highly regarded Beeman Scopes were manufactured in Japan and recommended in Duncan Long’s Book “The AR-15 /M16 A Practical Guide published in 1985.

They had excellent optics, adjustment dial for bullet drop compensator, adjustment setting for parallax and they were ruggedly built. Recently built a clone of this rifle using H&R A2 receivers from Palmetto State Armory and a Criterion HBAR which is about the only place you can still find anything close to the Colt 20" HBAR for barrels. Great rifle. I purchased the exact same rifle in 1990. I also purchased a Colt 22LR conversion kit with it. Most of my shooting with it has been with 22LR. Actually makes a great rimfire squirrel/rabbit plinking rifle. Rifle is stock including a vintage Colt AR handle mounted 4X scope also purchased new with the rifle. Colt scope is clear, but field of view is limited. I have a number of Colt ARs and this Match HBAR is accurate with just about any ammo 55 grains and heavier with 1" groups easy to obtain. Most accurate with Sierra 63 gr SPBT bullets. Also, mine came with a factory cleaning kit for the buttstock compartment. Not sure about your rifle, but mine has always had a really smooth crisp trigger that most of the ARs you purchase today do not.

Despite some of the undesirable features that Colt was including on the rifle at the time it's still one of my favorites! It does shoot accurate and has always been reliable! Mine also came with the cleaning kit. The trigger isn't bad but definitely more towards the usual MilSpec. Thanks for watching!

Speaking of great rimfire rifles, you can get the classic design of the 10/22 in the Rossi RS22 (same as Mossberg Plinkster). Free-floating barrel and you can get the WMR version too since they're around $100 each after rebate.

I also have a pre ban as they are known as. Same exact setup with the exception of the forward hinge pin ( screw type) is still original to this firearm. I purchased mine right before the ban as well. Colt was rather premature with these modifications. I am happy to say mine is still all original except I have replaced the furniture with Magpul. But have kept all the original parts of course. I have seen where some people have taken a grinder to the sear block so they can run the full auto bolt carriers. I also have a military front sight with bayonet lug which will fit dirrectlu onto this HBAR. Never installed it but I do have it. One thing Colt did get right is how well built these are and just how accurate these are. Mine is a tack driver. Anyway I purchased this rifle because at the time I was already use to the M16 A2's of the time. We were issued these and trained with them . I like the rifle. But have to admit the rifle of my dreams back th when was the Colt Delta HBAR. But they were overpriced and very hard to find. Now I have enough AR platforms that the original Colt fits nicely into my overall collections. Unless you have handled or owned a Colt from that time you will not understand why they are so sought after. But those of us who own them also treasure these rifles. Hold onto it. The Military Arms Channel has a Delta HBAR. I think he should sell it to me... 😁

I did a few videos of my A3/A4 that I bought a year later showing how I managed to successfully remove the sear block. The A2 in this video will remain unmolested. It's all original except the front pivot pin. I still have the screw type that it came with! Mine shoots very accurate! I have quite a few of what might be considered Gucci AR's but I always come back to the A2 HBAR as one of my favorites! Thanks for the great comments and watching!

I have a 6601 as well. One of my favorites. Mine is a little unique i believe, as mine was built on a slabside A1 lower with no sear block. Still has the bolt carrier that was made for the sear block with the shaved off lug. I believe that there werent a lot of those that left the factory that way.

I enjoyed the video it gave me something to do for 16 minutes. But all the things are pointing out on the castings will be different from rifle to rifle or lot to lot. I'm sitting here looking at the same exact Bushmaster you have and all of the casting marks are pointing out or not exactly like the ones on mine the trigger guard on mine is relatively smooth and in excellent my magazine catch is completely different as I said from casting to Casting lot to lot

Also the original Colt carry mount 4X20 were made in Japan. And they are high quality optics. I purchases a Trigicon 4X32 illuminated ACOG CHM Carry handle mount. They just sit up so high that I hardly ever use it. The funny thing is the Colt Delta HBAR comes with a rubber armoured Tasco. I always that it was a bit strange for Colt to go with that particular scope.

The optical quality on my old original Colt 4x20 is surprisingly good even when compared to some of my newer expensive stuff. The TASCO "Delta" rubber scope I bought back around the same time frame isn't too bad either. Almost afraid to try and use the TASCO though. If you look inside of it and around the glass edge mounting area you can see where the old adhesive has seen better days... wonder if there's anyone that can refurbish it? Thanks Chris! I have another AR Flat Top A3/A4 that I bought about a year later that was a large pin/sear block Colt and I did just that. I very carefully used a Dremel and ground it down flat even with the receiver. Didn't put so much as a scratch on the receiver. I can run whatever BCG I want in that one. It's the Match Target model but it still came with an HBAR. It came with a target crown and because it did not have a flash suppressor it was considered legal right after the California ban at the time so long as you didn't put a telescopic butt stock or fore grip on it. They later amended and changed the law to where you could only have a completely featureless rifle. I left California in 1999 when I retired from the Navy. Don't miss it at all!

What's interesting is the Roberti-Ross ban didn't actually ban this gun. It only banned the Colt AR-15 branded guns (and others by name). I bought an identical Sporter to yours in 1992 in Sacramento, CA. I paid 711.00 including tax and yes, it was a 14 day wait. The laws were different then and you could put a gun on layaway to start the wait and then pay it off on the 14th day, plus it wasn't 14 full days. You could have bought the gun at night and then picked it up on the morning of the 14th day. They later changed it to a 10 24 hour periods and the gun had to be paid in full before the wait started. So glad I left CA years ago, one of the first guns I bought after I left there was a Colt AR-15 rollmarked AR because CA told me I couldn't have one. Here's a question, were you able to register it under the 89 Roberti-Roos ban? Because technically they didn't ban this model until 2000 with the passage of SB23 which brought the characteristics and not the name under the ban.

Because of the timeframe that I made the purchase there were no issues or requirements. Later on when they first started changing the laws my rifle was grandfathered for features. I left California in late 99 and I think they were in the process of passing the registration garbage and new purchases had to become more and more featureless. I do not miss California, it's politics or cost of living at all and after 21 years in the Navy being close to the ocean is optional. I never enjoyed the fact that there was just about no parking available at the San Diego beaches even back then anyway. When I first joined the Navy at San Diego in 1974 it was a sleepy little Navy border town and I really enjoyed living and raising my family there. Place is an absolute Zoo now!

I got to wanting the A2 because I had a A2 in the Army. I looked around online and a couple things fell through. A buddy of mine told me about one in a gun and pawn. I go down there the guy hands it to me I hand it back, I will take it. I wasn't looking for the hbar match, I was looking for a government. This thing doesn't look like it's been fired. It was 1775(good number) I think I got a good deal.

The Match Target had an unthreaded crowned barrel unlike the Sporter. I also have a Match Target but had the barrel threaded and installed an A2 compensator. This would annoy the Colt purist for sure! Lol! My Match Target also came with a 1:9 twist whereas my Sporter is a 1:7 twist.

Ahhh the memories. Great rifle. I owned one and later sold it because mine didn’t have the fencing around the mag release button and I hated how it looked without it. After the awb sunset I bought a Colt le carbine that had the features I liked. I paid a little over $600 for my Sporter and sold it for $2000 during Obama era. Because of the big scare over awb’s people were panic buying and I sold it for a hefty price. Who said dems are antigun? They’re the best gun salesman of all time because when they’re in control gun sales go through the roof. 😂😂😂 The guy who bought it got upset later because prices came down and he felt he overpaid but that was the market and market dictates prices. I’m pretty sure that his investment will pay off because it’s an original Colt A2 that’s not in production and there has to be a demand by collectors. Just a side note, I served in the Marine Corps in the 80’s and carried the M16A2. At the 200 meter line we shot 8/3 - 2 for slow and rapid fire. When we moved back to the 300m line we adjusted to 8/3 and 5 at the 500.

I know the USMC did go to that but unsure when they made the changes? My father was Navy but two of my Uncles and a few of my cousins served in the USMC. If I wanted to annoy my cousins I would remind them that the Marines are not a separate branch and belong to the Department of the Navy! Yes, all our rifles were, from boot camp all throughout the FMF (Fleet Marine Force) we adjusted our elevation knob to 8/3 -2 for shooting at the 200. When I bought my Colt’s with the Carry handle I adjusted the elevation knob to be able to go to-2. I to this day shoot how our PMI’s taught us in recruit training and forever will. It’s hard for most to understand unless they served in the USMC. There are fine shooters in all branches but the Marines are just at another level when it comes the marksmanship.

Came across one with a serial number that starts with a CH, so the year is from 78-late 80's i believe, however, it's got a weaver or picatinny upper. Wonder what it's worth.

Not a Colt expert but the CH prefix on the lower serial number is supposed to mean "Competition HBAR" and was "pre-ban". The rail on the upper will be picatinny. There's a website called "biggerhammer" that has a lot of good Colt info. Colt also has a "S/N" lookup at their website. Once you know exactly what you have maybe you can figure out what it's worth from there? My Colt knowledge and history is very limited!

Depends on how they cut the shelf. A lot of manufactures cut them "high" and leave other areas un-machined to make it harder to install a DIAS or an auto sear. I had to trim the bottom of the Accuwedges for my Windham Weaponry rifles but they slid right in on my Colts. If I remember right I had to trim my old original Bushmaster as well. The Windham's weren't really all that bad but I just decided to take all the slop out anyway. The early 90's era Colts I have were loose enough to cause an elevated amount of annoyance. Most of the newer stuff I have came with the nylon tipped tensioning screw. I have considered trying some oversized pivot and take down pins that are available but the Accuwedge is just to easy. I also have the adjustable style front pivot pin that was an option from years ago but that one has to be screwed together. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I would say just for the A2 upper they may command a decent price but I don't think the sear block, large pin lower is a sought after collectable. Fulton Armory lists just their A2 upper at $1,025.00. Nobody is making the A2 upper anymore!

Pete if you can Could you let me know the month in 1989 that this rifle was made? I assume Colt began installing the *COLT Sear Blocks* shortly after the Stockton Schoolyard Shooting (January 17, 1989) You said you purchased this rifle in late 1989.. I'm trying to pinpoint the month that colt began putting those sear blocks in the rifles Any tidbit would be appreciated. Thanks

I bought it in late Dec 1989 and took possession in Jan 1990 right after the Roberti-Roos assault ban took effect in California. I tried looking it up at Colt's web site years ago but my S/N doesn't show up for date of manufacture. I would have to contact their archive department to find out.

Bought this new and took possession after the back ground check went through in January 1990 best I can remember? I could be wrong but seem to remember the California Roberti-Roos taking effect right after I bought it. Paperwork disappeared years and years ago. The owners manual copyright that came with the rifle says 1990.

So my Hbar serial starts with MH07... Does that mean it was made earlier than this one? I'm having a lot of confusion with Colts serials and dates. Any info would be appreciated.

I can't say for sure. Colt has a serial number look up at their Web site but it's not complete. I think for a small fee they will do an archive search and give you a certified letter which lists all the pertinent info.

Cool video! I've got a AR-15 A2 H-Bar but it says Colt Firearms and not Colt Manufacturing on the receiver. It has the bayonet lug cut off, I bought it new in the 80`s. When did they switch up the wording on the receiver?

Colt did those odd changes, cut off bayonet lugs, the push pin, and the other things too to try to appease the government before the assault weapons ban, hoping to prevent a ban I heard. But it didn't work, lots of people got pissed at colt for " cowering down to anti gun lobbyists" anyone else confirm this?

Whatever the exact reason was it definitely hurt their sales and when they lost military contracts and their never ending union problems... it was all down hill. Thanks for watching!

I can't remember exactly what I paid but I think back then out the door it was close to $1200. This was due to the impending California AWB taking place in January of 1990 long before the 1994 Federal Ban. As things got closer to 1990 in California FFL's couldn't keep them on the shelves. I don't think it's even worth that now because it's a sear block lower. I could be wrong but I don't believe the sear block lowers are sought after or thought of as collector rifles? Might try GunBroker to see what they are going for?

Great video, Pete enjoyed it. So, I also have 2 of these. The 1st one is an A2 Hbar sporter it is a green label Colt bought in 1985. The second one is like yours. I bought it in 1989. I also lived in California at the time. Colt decided to redo the weapon and get a jump on the federal ban that Daddy Bush did in 1990. If you don't know what a green label Colt is, Google it. Being a Vietnam Vet, my go-to weapon is the M-14. I have 2 of those. Again, it's a great video.

Thanks much appreciated! I was on SAF/BAF teams while onboard the USS Tripoli LPH-10 1989-1992. (Shipboard Security) We were still using old M-14's, 1911's and 870's! Most of the team would be issued a 1911 with a couple of shotguns and M-14's. You wouldn't know ahead of time if it was a drill or an actual security event until you got to the armory. If they gave you ammunition with your weapon it wasn't a drill. Running around in tight steel spaces, ladders and hatches with an M-14! Drill or no drill the same weapons were passed out for years and years and they were beat! Wouldn't be surprised if some of the M-14's could shoot around corners! Lol! Our shipboard Master at Arms for routine security and when the Marines were onboard had the newer good stuff! I joined the Navy the first time in October of 74 and Vietnam was not officially over yet but I got no where near the place. Did the Persian Gulf War on the USS Tripoli and after off loading the Marines and their helicopters they brought the Navy MH53E's onboard and turned us into a mine sweeping ship! We found one the hard way a few miles off of Kuwait clearing a path for the USS Missouri! Lol! Wikipedia and some other sites have a write-up about it if you're curious.

​@Peter Egger Thank you for your service. I was in the 4th Infantry Division in 1968. Carried the M24 sniper system. And a Model 70 Winchester 30.06. M14 was converted to the M24. The 14 might have been heavy, but it did the job in the jungle. It saved my but a few time's. Freedom and liberty 🇺🇸

@@crashoverride4881 Can't imagine what you had to deal with! A good buddy of mine here was drafted and did a tour! He was regular infantry and never mentioned any specialty but said he had a few close calls! Think I'll give him a call today and find out where he was at. I know he said there was one base he was at for about three months and it was a rare night when they weren't on the receiving end.

@Peter Egger I was in the central Highlands. Pleku. Mostly in Laos and cambodia. Running the Ho chi minh trails. There were so many bases all over South Vietnam. We were doing hit and run, trying to slow down the influx of weapons into the South. The NVA didn't like that too much. Lol 😆. But they had my attention and respect.

I've always just wondered why Colt made the decision and voluntarily did it? No other manufacturer ever did this. Some argue that it was to gain political favor with military contracts? Bushmaster had M16A2 contracts and then later on FN got the bulk of them. So how did that work out for Colt until the M4's came along? No real favor gained as far as I can see and losing some of the civilian commercial market because of it. Water under the bridge as Colt finally did go bankrupt and is now owned by CZ. Just a historical name now using mostly outsourced parts! They don't make much of the rifles themselves anymore. Don't hate Colt but haven't bought anything from them since the early 90's before realizing what I had purchased back then! A lot of people still buying them though and the new M5 does look a little interesting.
