I did a 6 month stint in the armory for my USAF Security Police Squadron in 1978 and there was a rack of (5) GAU 5’s there, not issued. I turned in my M16 and I issued one to myself, qual’d with it, and carried for the next 2 1/2 years until my discharge. Loved that rifle. And, no full size AR15’s for me since then. I have only ever carried carbines since.

*"What does GAU mean/stand for??"* - Probably the question in a lot of viewers minds... I'll tell you, in my round about way of story telling. When I was and MP at Bragg in the late 90s (118th), the Army (and military in general) - was going through a massive small arms upgrade. Leaving were the M-16A2s, and M-60s for M4s and M-240Bs, Humvees for ASVs - everything moving towards that "Force 21/Brigade Combat Team" model. The Pope AFB Security Forces (who also changed names from Security Police during this time) - talked about having new "GAUs" - (Possibly they called them GAU-4s? It's been a while! 😊) -But none of them could tell me *what the hell does GAU stand for?!* This was in the days before Google was really a thing - and years later I finally looked it up. Because it's Air Force - *Gun Aircraft Unit* They use the same official classification label for the Avenger 20MM Cannon onboard the A-10. It, is a GAU-8. And so on with other guns adapted for aircraft use. Damn drove me nuts for years just trying to figure that one out on my own! 🤣
@Colin89794 жыл бұрын
Maybe GAU also manufacture the 30mm Rotatary Cannon for the AR10 Warthog?....
@LRRPFco524 жыл бұрын
I was at Bragg from 1999-2003. We still had broke-down HMMWVs laden with all the go-to-war gear (painted over) in ULACC in 2nd Brigade. I do remember seeing some of the new up-armor HMMWVs show up in 2002. Not sure if our D Co got any of them, as I was in 2 different rifle companies in 325. GAU-8 is 30mm 7-barrel rotary cannon, not 20mm. That's the M61 Vulcan-common to all the teen fighters.
@alexisbierquedebirkadefauv17444 жыл бұрын
Doesn't the A-10 use a 30mm? And the Gau-8 is a 30mm?
@wallaroo12954 жыл бұрын
@@LRRPFco52 Yep, I stand corrected - the GAU-8 is in 30mm, not 20. Thank you for that. When I left Bragg in '99 the MPs had just gotten M4s, we didn't even get adapted M203s to start, the armorer's just slung the M16-A2 length 203 and left the upper handguard of the M4 - it looked goofy as hell, but worked. Later, I think they introduced a specific M4 fitted 203, but I was already out. When I went to work at Fort Greely Alaska with the DA Civilian Police a few years later, we still used A2s, understandably. But, we were probably one of the few police departments at the time, to have 249s! 😆 What a weird experience that was... In the first few years after 9/11, we *were* the defensive unit for Greely - like quasi MPs. The active units were deployed, heavy. When we would get a threat against Greely, it was us that loaded up. It didn't seem weird at the time, most of us had been MPs anyway. But almost 20 years later... Ehh, I don't think that really wasn't our role. But, such was the need at the time.
@LRRPFco524 жыл бұрын
@@wallaroo1295 We still had the standard M203 on our M4s with the KAC RAS upper 3 rail handguard. SOCOM had the short barrel 203 as part of the SOPMOD Block 1 package. We got M4s and M240s in 1997 at Fort Lewis in 25th ID.

As you very well know, Larry, I'm much more of a shooter than a collector (I'm the host of your MA classes!), so I don't have historically correct retro ARs. But my first AR was a Colt SP-1 Carbine. Slick sided, no forward assist, pencil barrel and 2 position aluminum collapsible buttstock. $$ got a little tight, so I ended up posting the carbine for sale a few years back. Someone contacted me wanting the lower for their own retro build, and for some insane reason, he offered me MORE for just the lower than I had the entire carbine listed for! At some point, maybe I'll get another replica slab side lower from NODAK, or some other manufacturer, and assemble the carbine somewhat "correct" again. I do love those pencil barrels. I remember back in 2001 when the PD finally got patrol rifles, they had Bushmasters with heavy barrels that didn't taper below the handguards. With limited experience with different ARs at the time, it made me appreciate how quick it was to swing that SP-1 Carbine of mine! See you in October.

I built a gun identical to this configuration on a Nodak Spud lower receiver, and got the exact same gun, sans markings, for a whole lot less than $2500, despite using original, not repro single heat shield hand guards and original aluminum collapsible stock I managed to find and purchase. In one respect mine is superior to this offering by Colt. The Colt has an 11.5 inch barrel with the faux moderator permanently attached. Mine has a 14 inch barrel and faux moderator is a "slipover" type, that allows that extra 2.5 inches of barrel to extend forward inside the flash hider. The external appearance is identical, but you get a little more velocity, and at least a little extra barrel length to make the carbine-length gas system work better.

For whatever reason, my first AR ( which is still in my safe) just had to a heavy barreled A2 upper. Great rifle, I was super excited and proud to own my first AR rifle. I then proceeded to hang every possible accessory I could fit onto it. " More is better" was my mentality. My rifle ended up weighing more than USS Iowa's anchor. Nowadays, I like my CAR-15 clone. I even mounted the Colt 4x scope on it. Far handier and far sexier than my beloved A2.
