I got mine in February. This pistol is a tack driver. I started at the 25 yard range and thought I was missing follow up shots.... no, they were so close I couldn’t see the other holes. Accurate as hell. Trigger is phenomenally smooth and clean. I’ve run 400 rounds through it and perfect. Machining is flawless. I paid $1450 plus tax, didn’t care I wanted it. Absolutely love this gun

Everything you said about cnc machining is true. Parts are produced to exact tolerances and each part produced is exactly the same. Can't beat that. Mine is so accurate, I almost don't have to aim. I'm selling all my other handguns. Don't need them anymore. Thank you Colt for bringing back my absolute favorite 357magnum revolver. ❤☺👍

Got a 6" in February. Sent it back to factory because of light strikes with cheap ammo. Factory put a heavier main spring and no problems since even with the imported ammo. Better trigger pull than the originals, which I have had 2 of in the past. In fact the best action I have ever experienced with a revolver. Very happy, if Colt fixes the few quality control issues, this will be a hit for the some time to come. Only hope it is produced in a 2.5" sometime soon.

Easy fix though, for $65 on eBay, I replaced it with an Altamont Rosewood with slight finger grooves. Changing that grip made the gun look and feel the way it should for the MSRP from factory.

It a beautiful fine shooting gun. I bought the 4.25” because this is not a “range toy” I actually plan to carry mine. The 4 inch shoots great. Smooth .357 shooter. Hardly any recoil. Even with the shorter barrel. If you plan to shoot at paper the 6 inch is great, if your like me and plan to take yours into the bush as a back up gun, definitely go with the 4.25 inch with a Diamond D’s custom holster….

@Hammer Striker Thanks for a really good video on the Colt 2020 Python. I see you posted this early-on after its release to the buying public, in January 2020. To my perception from online commentary in general, lots of folks were able to obtain one months ago for MSRP or below. I find that most interesting. Because many others I've seen lately have yet to even see one in-person. I live on the west central coast of FLA across the bay from Tampa, and I hadn't seen one in the flesh (steel) until about late September and the going price was about $2449. And at that, they would only sporadically come in, in onesies and twosies. And those would fly off the shelf before you could say "May I see that gun, please?". Then the price eventually dropped down to $2249, $200 less than before. In the meantime, I saw an offering from (what I perceived to be) a fairly large online Indiana-based gun seller "Only One In Stock" 2020 4" Python for $1999 on Black Friday. Wow! Okay! My missus was sweet enough to say go'fer it, so I did. I eventually got a ship notice that it was coming via USPS and was being delivered Priority to my LGS by a specific date. The day came and went, and then some, and THEN SOME... I had a Postal Supervisor look into it, and even though they earlier showed it in the Ft. Wayne Post Office, she was able to determine it NEVER WAS in the Postal System - period. So after the better part of a month had passed since ordering it, I opened a dispute with my credit card issuer, who concurred that I was being flim-flammed by the online seller. I soon phoned my LGS who had one 6-incher left in-stock that I could have for $1849 and had them hold it for me till I could ride on over to the shop. Bought it on the spot. Well... 36 hours after opening the credit card dispute, I suddenly get a USPS tracking update email saying it arrived in the Indianapolis Post Office. Inside of 5 days (weekend included) the 4" Python I ordered was delivered to my LGS. I went and got that right away, too. So now, I'm blessed enough to have both a 4" and a 6" 2020 Python. I'm kinda suspicious that credit card dispute notification lit a fire under the seller's @$$. I gotta tell you, I'd previously owned 6 older Pythons ranging from 1968 to a 2003 Python Elite and others in-between, and loved them all pretty much, but was always all-too-eager to make trades for what caught my fancy at the time... (stupid!!). Anyway, with that much prior Python history, I honestly like this new breed of Python even better, just like you evidently do. The new CNC-machining on newer Colts shows to be really good stuff. The lockwork action is definitely better IMHO and the finish on the stainless is quite handsome, as are the nicely-shaped and beautiful walnut laminate grips. I know the blued steel & walnut traditionalist old-schoolers are gonna throw eggs at me for that, but I'm an old-timer, too, at 65. I used to be a staunch member of that crowd, but have since broadened my horizons and feel I'm better off for appreciating quality guns of various ilks. This new Python appeals more to me than its long line (65 years!) of iconic predecessors. I wouldn't turn down an original if someone was kind enough to give it to me, but I have to say here I'm feeling very blessed and fortunate to own 2 2020 models in the 2 offered barrel lengths. Very fortunate, indeed. My heart sincerely goes out to those who are still diligently looking to find one and haven't yet. Firearms distribution, to my observation, sometimes seems to be a fickle and unpredictable beast. I've long ago worked part-time for 3 different FFL's and still can't understand that anomaly. Sorry for the long-winded dissertation, but I figured you just might find my overall observations and concurrences with you to be interesting. Once again, thanks for a really good Python video. I really appreciate it. Merry Christmas! :-)
@HammerStriker4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I am glad you were successful in scoring both. Most likely the fact that any firearm lost in transit, especially in sketchy circumstances will bring in the ATF is what motivated the seller to solve the problem.

Fresh from the range today with my own and I can say a handful of things about the 2020 Python. Like anyone with a lust for the old ones, I was watching as the newest one hit the market. I got mine just after they began fixing issues with the crane for a non-gouged amount while they were still scalping left and right. I had half a mind to flip mine once I got it just to make a profit, honestly. Mine came with a small variety of imperfections, not the least of which that boggles my mind is the slot for the grip screw being off center. On one side my little Colt medallion protrudes and isn't a mirror facing of the other. I have the crown chatter they're becoming known for. That all said, it's worked like a charm. I've noted some tolerance relief after putting no less that 100 rounds of .357 through mine, however and it has obtained a slight rattle. I've done a lockup test and it's silent, which is good, but if it persists I'll have to contact Colt which is not high on my priority list. Hand fitting really does make a difference as it lets someone catch the small errors. People used to just letting a machine do the work and check boxes aren't going to look remotely as close, and we've seen this with the immediate release fiasco of this very revolver. All things that would not have happened if hands and eyes were on more steps.

Nice closeups! One thing I noticed was the added fluting on the rear of the cylinder. I suppose this is a feature to increase the efficiency for the cylinder latch and to decrease drag on the cylinder as it rotates? I’ve not seen this on any other revolver.
@smithn.wesson4955 жыл бұрын
Very good question and even better observation. Yes, the added fluting is to both increase the efficiency of the latch and to eliminate the drag lines on the cylinder. I am surprised more companies do not use this design, so you don't have that "ring" of a drag line all the way around the cylinder. Plus, it looks kind of cool!

From the side profile of the hammer, it appears that the original Python’s hammer block safety has been replaced with a transfer bar safety, like on the Anaconda. Not really a good or bad thing, just a more modern system, since most firing pins are now frame mounted. (It took some goading to get Hickok45 to correct his terminology.) Since I already have a 6 inch Python, I am torn about getting a new one in 4.25 or 6 inch. I will probably get the 4.25 inch one first, since I regretted not getting an original one in 4 inch. I had an 8 inch Python, but it never looked quite right. So, I sold it around the year 2000. In hindsight, hanging on to it would have worked out well financially. Update: It is definitely a transfer bar safety. Found it mentioned in a video where they showed a display Python with a transparent side plate.

Good review, muzzle crowns were damaged during polishing, not tool chatter. Colt figured out quickly that holding the revolver in a barrel jig during final polishing isn't they way to properly preserve the crown. Going forward they are not holding the revolvers by the barrel during polishing. That trigger is nice, but it has nothing on a standard production Smith. Send it back to Colt to get the muzzle recrowned and use the yoke to close the cylinder going foward.

The original Python was very well built and can shoot thousands of .357 Magnum without the problem of a stretched frame or cracked forcing cone. The action and hand fitting and polishing was what made the Colt Python so popular with competitive shooters and had served for decades in Law Enforcement. The new Python is a different revolver. The reason why the new Colt Python has a heavier single action pull is because of drop safety testing. Hopefully the problems are worked out, a few reports are confirmed now by people at Shot Show have experienced them. Most are quiet about not talking about the cylinder not rotating. It’s sad the quality control would allow a Python slip with the flaws in the finish when the Colt reps are saying this will be held to the high standards.

I noticed it doesn't have a cylinder stop, so there must be changes in the cylinder pin to keep the cylinder from falling down past the cylinder window when opened. Maybe something like Ruger double actions. At least I think the old pythons had cylinder stops the best I can remember.

Just surprised that Colt didn't QA the hell out of this thing considering how everyone was awaiting the return of they Python. They also knew it had to be perfect or there would be a lot of backlash. Missed opportunity but I'm sure Ruger and Smith and Wesson are happy. Maybe we will get lucky and they will get all the bugs out or even release a bug free Grizzly. No excuse for Colt since the weapon should of been Flawless for the price they were asking.
4 жыл бұрын
I agree. Nowadays companies focus on Failure Analysis in the manufacturing process rather than Quality Control of the finished product ... the theory is that if the manufacturing process is perfect then the product is perfect. This FA/QC trade-off came from the semi-conductor industry and works well for commodity goods like chips, not so well for precision machines like firearms.
