Stainless may be most practical - but nothing can beat the appearance of a highly polished, deeply blued revolver. The sort that is a shining blue-black.

That ejection rod issue is definitely not limited to your model. I bought a 6” blued Python earlier this year and sent it back to Colt to have the rod wobbling fixed. While it was gone, I went to a gun store and looked at the stainless Python and Anaconda they had in the case and they both had a wobble in the ejection rod. Mine came back and the issue is gone but this seems like it could be a pretty wide spread problem. Thanks for the video!

It still puzzles me as to why Colt decided to cram three vents on the rib of the blued 4.25" models. They continue to make the stainless version with two vents, and it looks so much better (and more like the originals).
@Paultricounty6 күн бұрын
I was wondering the same thing when he said that blue version is a 4.25”. I Wenr to colt sight and all but the blue 4.25 have two vents on the rib. The 5”:also has three like the 6”. Very curious about this. Good call out. Also if you notice on the 4.25 blue version they moved the first and third vent closer to the muzzle and the rear of the barrel rib in order to fit the three vents and still have them the same size.

I have always, always been a Smith & Wesson guy, but in the stretch of time from the mid 80's to 2016 or so, I acquired two 6 inch blued Pythons and one 4 inch SS Python. None of which do I possess any longer. I am not quite sure right now why I sold my Pythons. And there is no denying that they are beautiful revolvers. But the one buggaboo for me with the original models was the lock works were not near as robust as a Smith, or a Ruger Security Six or GP 100. I never had any timing issues with any of my Pythons, though that was a problem with some of them. But I did have a small issue with my stainless 4 incher in that after only maybe 200 rounds through it the ratchet had peened against the recoil shield upon recoil, enough that it had effectively made the hole smaller that the cylinder pin would not fully engage the hole any longer. I was able to fix it myself but it left me with a very unsatisfactory feeling for that gun. Now for many, many years I was never a fan of Ruger Revolvers. Well that changed maybe 15 years or so ago. I acquired a ' purty ' 4 inch SS Security Six, which is my ' Home Protection Unit '. And then approx. two years ago, in the span of 2 or 3 weeks apart, I came across two 5 inch GP 100s, one SS and the other blued. And I believe they were both special orders from Davidson's. And they both were unfired and in ' as new ' condition. Well, I will say that I love both of these guns as they are excellent, excellent shooters, and I now think that the Ruger GP 100 revolver is a very beautiful revolver. I actually love my two 'GPs' way more than I did any of my Pythons, and they have become my favorite .357 shooters.

Many revolvers are out of time, barrels canted, sights off center, in the case of autos, malfunction city. Not pointing just at colt but they have had their issues too. I had hope CZ quality would infuse into colt but no. There were issues with diamondbacks and pythons locking up in early ones. Its not just them. I could go on and on about new releases that totally blow upon release.

I also swapped the rear sight for a Wilson combat, that made all the difference in the world, now when you grab it and wiggle it side to side it does not move! I did the same with a recent purchase Anaconda, but with that one I had to machine down my own front sight to a sight height of .265 to get it to zero at 25 yards, with the .180 factory sight it shot about 8 inches high at 25 yards (with original factory sights).

I'm a long-time revolver shooter. Hunting, playing, LE and competition. While enjoyable, your video seemed to be all about how you "feel" about the revolver, rather than what you "think" about it. I guess my background with wheelguns make me think about them in more technical terms. I agree that the gun feels good in the hand, and that fit and finish are spectacular. But I can't help but think you should have mentioned a few of the negatives, too. For example: 1) The DA pull stacks. Not as bad as the original Python, but it still stacks noticeably. You even mentioned that the DA pull lends itself to setting up, where you pull the trigger most of the way through and then finish with a short stroke. That's because it stacks, and that's not usually considered a good thing. 2) The single action trigger on my 4.25" SS Python breaks at a measured 6.25 pounds. That's terrible. 3) The serrations on the trigger are sharp, and extremely uncomfortable during DA shooting. 4) The rear sight has click adjustments for elevation, but not for windage. To adjust windage, one must loosen a tiny set screw, drift a windage insert in the rear sight, then tighten the tiny screw. This involves a lot of guesswork, and a lot of worrying about stripping the allen head out of that tiny screw. Thankfully, Wilson Combat makes a wonderful drop-in rear sight replacement unit that does everything the original Colt rear sight should have done. 5) The grips are too wide to allow the use of speed loaders. They are gorgeous, feel great in the hand and fit like a glove. But they're too fat for speed loading. Rather than trim them, I opted to replace mine with a set of Hogues. 6) The stroke length of the ejector is too short to fully eject 357 Mag brass. This only becomes an issue after the revolver has been fired a few times and starts to build up some fouling in the cylinder. But, under those circumstances, you must use a smart "slap" on the ejector rod to propel magnum cases out of the cylinder. Your video is a "feel good" piece. But I think you would do your viewers a better service by being a little more technical and by including some of the negatives along with the positives. YMMV Good luck and good shooting! :-)

You did a really excellent job on this video and I think you have a great demeanor / attitude. I especially appreciated being able to watch you print the paper targets. I just wish you would do it bench-rested to see how accurate the gun really is. I think you are probably my age. I know as I have aged, I'm not as steady with a gun as I used to be in my 20s and 30s (I'm 60) and that I appreciate being able to set the gun on something, even a "shooting stick" to help steady it. I also know that on some revolvers, each chamber will cause the bullet to print at a slight variance to the other chambers within the same cylinder, depending on how meticulously the revolver is made. So benchresting helps really show what the revolver itself is capable of, I think. (Just An Opinion LOL).

When I retired my guys got me a 6" blue Python made in 1969 and yes it is gorgeous and yes I am extremely grateful... I have had it for more than a decade now and changed two things... One the grips did not really work for me and they were near mint so I put em away lol I have seen em go for like $400 which is crazy to me.... the front sight.... horrible ramp stuff. I found a NOS patridge Python sight... These old Pythons use two pins to hold the front sight while my Trooper has only one pin. Oddly the Trooper has a far superior front semi patridge... go figure? so now my slightly modified Python is perfect for me. I have Smiths and Dan Wessons and they all have things that make em great. I love handguns and have been shooting em for half a century or better. I handload and so far have never shot a 38 spl from any of my .357 guns... nor a 44 spl from any 44 mag gun... just don't like the idea mostly but the ring left in the chamber turns me off. but to each his own. Handloading makes me spoiled I guess... If I want a 38 spl power .367 I can just make it. Anyway.. the old Python is a bit different in feel/operation than the new... If I did not have the old one tho I would have likely owned a new one by now. Still.... something about owning the 'real thing' ....

I'm very happy with my 4" Python, almost as smooth as my beloved 686. Rather than spare you old Python do what the old timers recommend and have an over travel stop installed. It seems the gun was designed for slow fire, single action usage as its steady diet. When firing double action it does nasty things to the lock work timing. Once the over travel stop is applied, you can shoot it to your heart's content. (per Bill Wilson and Ken Hackathorn).

The quality control has been lacking on the new Pythons since day one. Sights have sucked, poor crowning and finish, light strikes on da, sa pulls should be 4 lbs or less, lastvos the variation on the barrel vents. The big question is who makes the out sourced parts that Colt assembled and finished

Pythons were never 'fragile' the way they lock up is the same as a Dan Wesson and other similar guns... the 'hand' locks the cyl for zero play on shooting.. the Colts also turn so that the hand pushes the cyl closed.. a smith is actually pushing the cyl/crane open or out... So the hand does get some wear on Colts. this is all Colts and DW's it is really a moot point using single action mode or slow DA... rapid DA.. I mean real rapid dry fire for instance really beats up the hand and it is worn at 10k rounds... raise your hand if you have ever shot 10k rounds through a revolver.... I actually have but not a Colt.. what actually happened back in the day was people dry fired handguns endlessly to practice for say PPC games. Smiths loved that cause it just did a dry fire tune on the guns LOL but Colts? it wore the hand too much. The good news is that even today a Colt hand is like $25... the bad news it that it has to be 'fitted' but the better news is that it is right there to take out by about anyone and... On my Trooper what I did was simply put said hand on my anvil (after measuring) and give it some light smacks with a body hammer (any hammer will do tho) and then measure again.. .now it had 'grown' like 8 thou? and luck or what... it was perfect. I mean for the timing thing. Not rocket science. The hand is pretty much the only 'fragile' thing on a Colt. A normal use of a Python would be (my estimate0 10-15k rounds before you had to do this one hour fix. for perspective I own a Smith model 1917 made in 1919.. minty except the cyl release latch was broken/sheared off... i got a NOS one easily but... it had to be fitted. I am no gunsmith so cautious... had to take the gun apart 3 times with trial and error fitting to get it to work... LOTS of hours in my case.

😐 I don't like Colts cylinder lockup, but I they look good, though I had an Anaconda sold it
@bluesoverlord9 күн бұрын
That’s interesting. The direction of the cylinder on a Colt is clockwise, so it helps close the crane (yoke) and the lockup at ignition is usually tighter in a Colt than a S&W.

I owned a anaconda at one time. The revolver was well built and had average accuracy, but I don't care for the cylinder release.😊

Love my anaconda and the python, but the sights they put on them are just so underwhelming for the quality and history that the rest of the revolver IS

The hideous qr code stamped on the new colt revolvers is like nose ring or tramp stamp on a beautiful woman.

Gun companies tend to release variations of products to keep things fresh and renew interest. I wouldn't be surprised to see one eventually.
