Why do you need the automatic condensate drain and can't just leave open the valve (instead of opening every 10 to 15min or having the drain open it)? What does the pressure maintenance valve help with?

Sorry, did not see your question until now. If the drain is open, then the pressure drops - so: no, you cannot leave the valve open. You can open it manually every couple of minutes to drain the condensate water or you can have this automatic option, which drains automatically.
