Columbia Tutorial @NullaCruising

This tutorial video was inspired by our visit to Cuba. The Columbia rhythm originated in the rural parts of Cuba. It can be the fastest of the rumba rhythms, but can also be played slow. The Columbia is the only one played in 6/8. The clave is highlighted on a separate screen. Viewers can go directly to the section of their interest by clicking on it in the list provided below.
We are driving around the world in our 1983 Toyota Land Cruiser named Nulla. Our favorite moments are when we find that intersection of music and art. We spent almost two months in Cuba at the beginning of 2023. During our time in Cuba, we witnessed the importance of music.
The highlight of our time in Havana was studying with legendary drummers and percussionists at Casa de Juan Bencomo. Almost daily we studied Cuban rumba rhythms with Maestro Maximino Duquesne. The time spent with Maximino was an honor we will never forget, and we thank him for the opportunity.
We also want to thank Lazaro Rizo and Juan Bencomo, who shared their time with us and are featured in the video. In addition, we want to recognize and thank Miguelito Leon, who supported, coordinated the artist, and directed the development of the video. These artists are all members of the Rumba All Stars.
