Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid has added several projects to her international portfolio: the Guangzhou Opera House in China, the Evelyn Grace Academy and the London Aquatics Centre in the UK, and MAXXI: National Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, which possesses a sense of newness that according to the New York Times "jolts th[e] city back to the present like a thunderclap." What else is new? #wood111611

So thankful that I got to sit in that room that day and watch this presentation upfront. Zaha had a huge personality and very blunt and politically carefree... I appreciated it ...RIP

Yes, she says it in her lectures. Architecture has a bad rap because its architects give it one. Zaha, Calatrava, Gehry.. their buildings are extremely expensive because of their shape and, once built, they sometimes don't work they way they should. Calatrava has been sued multiple times for making buildings that later have technical failures drainage or structure. Architecture should be questioned not stylistically, but for its physical quality as well as the human purpose it serves.

I couldn't agree more. You can call it carving, painting,...but never architecture. She was designing forms to impress other architects and in the process she missed the point of architecture, which it improving people's lives and creating sustainable facilities that contribute to the preservation of the planet regardless of the shape of the building and by the way shapes should be a result of a thinking process not something to achieve and that's why all her buildings look similar. With my due respect, her architecture is meaningless.

I never thought about the structural failures and all that, but they do look cool.

It’s expensive when 1. You need GPS to locate sprinkler heads. 2. Complex shapes 3. You need to water test the building before final acceptance by the owner. One thing Hadid, Gehry, Graves ignore is rain and snow. But interesting to look at and she must have some excellent cad people and cad renderers.

She will most likely be the architect who will design buildings in the space station as well as stations on the Moon and possibly Mars.

Interesting thought. My main thing is make sure the structure fits like a glove with the surroundings specifically in special areas. I wont say much after that assuming everything else is basically aggreeable.LOL

The problem is that Zaha doesn't care about the effect of her buildings once they are built. She even said herself: 1- she doesn't care about / believe in context, 2- she hates having people in her renders. Her buildings aren't made for people; they're all about aesthetic shapes and form. There is no depth to her work, and yet people still fall for it.

She meant that she hates this depiction of countless tiny humans doing irrelevant stuff through a rendering and the tendency to decorate everything with trees. She understands architecture exclusively as space and ultimately architecture IS primarily space.

It actually does work: the buildings are able to stand up, and many of her designs allow for a continuous flow of light and space. I don't see what you say is not working here.

I dont believe it! where did you hear this? What I have learned over the years is that some architecture should just function and serve a purpose but yet other projects have to have allegiance to an environment, history theme, concept. I havent looked into Zaha's work much but she uses a similar futurist design style. Its stuff I might notice here and there. Architecture has been getting a bad rap seriously in news flashes on jobs and employment. I went to Pratt but I smelled problems early

انا الوحيد اللي يواجه صعوبة في فهم جمالية هذه الاشياء؟؟؟ Parametricism is rather annoying to me, and the process of building in it is even more annoying. I'm probably saying this because I'm a student! But I really don't get this. PS: This is me being subjective not dissing or anything :)

As described by John Steward; the most "fuckable" meaning sexy and feminine buildings; therefore completely implicit and non-intellectual; almost animal architecture.. Last question "(linked to the context of Columbia, GSAPP, which is a conceptual / theoretical school if anything) is a metaphoric criticism of metaphoric description that is trying to sound like a concept. Dead Motion = Dead Concept = Just a decorative "Art" on a city scale.. Architecture lacking any idea; There's no theory in there. But regardless, much of her work is still sensual and cool!"

Philip Sharpe No, I'm a non religious person. I'm also from Europe. But if I was a muslim would my comment be less valuable somehow? you must think my style is sexist and maybe in your mind muslims are sexist? So you're probably an american I'm guessing? My intention is not to be dismissive of Zaha's work in any way, but to offer a dimension which is overlooked. Her work is very persuasive because it's sexy.

It appears that Ms Hadid has never studied public speaking. Gifted though she may be in the field of architecture, she tends to ramble incoherently, or speak in some sort of interior mental shorthand, when speaking. Trying to make sense of what she is saying is hopeless. This is a waste of time.
