Butch Miles: Swingin' Hi Hat Tricks and Tips

Several years ago, Legendary jazz drummer (and friend) Butch Miles stopped by the store. He was kind enough to show us a few swingin' hi hat tricks and some tips on how to learn them.
Butch has performed with some of the biggest names in jazz including: Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dave Brubeck, Mel Torme, Lena Horne, Joe Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Woody Herman, Clark Terry, Gerry Mulligan, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Benny Goodman, Tony Bennett and Rosemary Clooney...to name a few.
Butch still performs and records regularly and is on the Jazz Studies faculty at Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas.

Man I haven't seen Butch since 1985 at a Drum Clinic. A great guy and fantastic drummer. He was called a Buddy clone for a long time, but he's got his own style. Good to see him on here.

One of the greatest of all time - excellent drummer AND musician who understands where the music comes from, repertoire, melody and all that jazz. Little known fact, Butch is a great singer as well.

Butch Miles one of the most underrated drummers ever but a fantastic player, go back and look at some of his playing from the 70’S 80’s and even the 90’s he’s amazing.

This is so cool. He makes it swing and he makes it look so easy! Butch is in a class by himself. His Sing Sing Sing is amazing in that he can do so much with 'just' two toms. Absolutely world class. Always seems such a nice guy too.

I’m lucky to have been able to play in some jams with him at the Elephant Room. Thanks for being the shining example all jazz drummers should follow, on and off the bandstand. Rest in Peace.

Butch here is passing on knowledge from guys like Buddy Rich and Papa Jo. He studied them long ago, and then put it to good use with the Count Basie Orchestra. He is as real a deal as there ever was.

I'll double that wow I saw him at a clinic he did when his was with count basie on an Australian tour it was 1978 at the sydney Opera house and the clinic was at the Rocks He was 30 years old at the time and the cross over triplets he was showing everybody was so inspiring what an incredible drummer.😎🥁
