"Our favorite little cutie, Clementine is turning 1! 🍊
As the first Bornean orangutan born at the Columbus Zoo in 60 years, Clementine is extra special to our Zoo family, and it’s been so much fun to watch her grow over the last year. Just in the last few weeks, she’s amazed us with her growing independence, taking her first ""long-distance"" trek away from mom Khali to grab a snack from a zookeeper on her own, practicing nest-building, and mimicking Khali’s head-covering skills with woodwool and a sheet.
She’s also started formal training, which includes working on moving away from mom and getting comfortable with a syringe, a standard practice to help with long-term medical care. At 9.5 lbs, Clementine loves solo play on the firehose, bonding with Auntie Dumplin, and is slowly warming up to her dad, Sulango.
With her birthday falling on Thanksgiving this year, we're extra thankful for her! Help us celebrate by wishing her a very happy (early) birthday in the comments! 🧡"
