What is absolutely great about these videos is that you marry the academic piece of warfare with years of actual military experience.

Chris, Great video and breakdown in the most simple terms. For the rest of the room, The biggest thing that I have found when talking about OODA, is the oversimplification of the model. It is often described and modeled as a single-loop system. This is not accurate at all. It is instead a double-loop system, which is dynamic (Characterized by continuous change, activity, or progress.) The key to OODA is the Orientation phase - as this is the most varied by person. This is where Kleins RPDM comes into importance because your orientation on stimuli is based on your prior experience, bias, and even preferences (Cynefin model) for what and how you make decisions will factor. If we were to update our meta-analysis of decision-making models we would see the connection happening between all of these models within the Orientation phase of OODA. OODA is the big picture model, while Kliens RPDM and the Cynefin model deep dive into the orientation and decision phases. Keep in mind that the EDM is an output decision matrix designed for Infantry Leaders under fire. Of course, there are other applications as Chris mentioned but its important to know how this model was born. Some of my notes that I kept while researching the EDM that may take you further in your own research; BENEFITS OF HEURISTICS AND SIMPLICITY: - Reduce complexity. - Provide a manageable set of choices for action. - Combat "paralysis by analysis" can be overcome. - Facilitate informed, timely, and acceptable problem-solving and decision-making solutions. **Time compression matters and along with the complexity of the problem (Cynefin framework). Requires quick, multi-factor analysis based on Kliens RPDM. The difference in time vs. complexity of the problem is the biggest paradigm shift that warriors need to make. Some problems require more time, even if you don't think you have more time, you might need to make the time to accomplish the goal. CAUTIONS AND LIMITATIONS: - An unthinking use of heuristics can lead to bias and poor judgment. - Tendency to oversimplify that which is not actually simple. **To overcome these limitations, understand how to use heuristics as well as which biases they can lead to. Pair this understanding with critical thinking. **When time allows, conduct a more detailed study of complex environments and problems using heuristics as a start point only, then reassess and adjust accordingly. LESS FAMILIAR EXAMPLES of related models -RAFT (Relationships, Actors, Functions, and Tensions) **Related to and feeds into CARVER Matrix for targeting (Special forces) as well as Center of Gravity Analysis (Ends, Ways, Means). Doing all three analyses helps us plan our offensive tasks as well as what to defend and those associated tasks. -RCP (Remove, Change, and Provide) ** American culture is addicted to providing action for problem-solving, ie. add another law. However, to change and or remove are equally valid and oftentimes necessary Remember, the key to time-sensitive decision-making in complex and chaotic situations is simplicity, not complexity. Use heuristics as one of many tools to accomplish this simplification!

I remember being told about the OODA model in the context of seizing the initiative from the enemy by disrupting their tempo. This is excellent exposure upon decision making, models, as well as their generalizations. Of course, I've got love for the Ruger Mini-14. I see you! ;)

In street encounters you can hack someones OODA Loop. Put a mouthpiece in when you feel the mood changing and when the aggressors go to make their move just smile. You can literally see their brain reboot. It gives you time and can even work deescalating. If nothing else it protects your teeth.

Superb. I had heard parts of this from you, a black hat, and a veteran trainer, but not integrated like this. I've been able to reflect on this stuff in training and, if I'm hesitating; ask myself, "where am I in ooda"? The 4 questions seems to get answered right at the beginning of a contact, yet the answers can change....cuz so many things get a vote. So, I ask myself, is this still mine? Can I still take this with or without help, can I still hold it? Now, I wonder if the best course is to stick with a decision or be willing to shake the etch-a-sketch. In my career, I've seen the results of being unwilling to change course at the macro level. We call it the decision train momentum. I presume it is just as costly at the small unit level. Difference is: guys at the bottom suffer while folks at the top get a bonus as they leave.

Once I get a shave and a bath, no one will recognize me. I'm going to ride to New Orleans and start some shit in the street. More wanted than Jesse James. F*it. JJ said Dynamite! SP Ryan. That scene of the bombed radar is aligorical to the US and Germany in the entire War. America could have ignored the War and say it was somebody's else's problem, but we didn't, and we lost our innocence. The medic got killed. They then let the German soldier go free. The Germans knew Hitlers outlook was broken ( radar bomed), yet they fought for it anyway.

I will not deny Boyd his legacy or take anything from him but there was much to suggest he had significant character flaws, especially being one of the founding members of the fighter plane Mafia and the reformist definitely cause him to lose some credibility in my opinion
@christopherlarsen7788 Жыл бұрын
Too be certain. COL Boyd later admitted that his actions, words, and behavior had cost him promotions to flag officer. The USAF did not even claim him as a champion of the OODA Loop until after Boyd's death. That says a lot. But...his insight into human cognition was instrumental to future research. It certainly has been an influence to my work.
