You know i started with a 590 military model as my first shotgun. Parkerized finish, bayonet lug, ghostring sights. I sold it to a friend who really wanted it. Had an AR and a FAL and live in the country. Later on I figured i needed a shotgun. Got a used 870 police magnum. Had rifle sights, parked finish, extended magazine. Wood furniture. I also ended up with Winchester 1300 defender. That gun sucked. I think i have to agree with you on the 590. Its considerably lighter than the 870 with the alloy receiver but just as tough. Something the winchester 1300 defender could not pull off. My 590 was about $400 slightly used. But my friend got a Maverick 88 around the same time NIB for $200 that wasnt as cool as the 590 but overall the same thing. Plus Remington pretty much sucks now. On top of making a super shitty 9mm, after making a pretty good 1911, to get people to try their kind of weird 9mm, they decided to totally fuck up their 870 and 700 guns on top of it.

Good stuff. My thoughts on pumps is if you want a pistol grip get a Remington, if you want a classic stock get a Mossberg. The location of the safeties is my reasoning.

I found that out as well. I got a Choate pistol grip stock for mine and the tang safety is not good for that. Not a big issue if you're keeping loaded but with empty chamber. But having a safety that takes a lot of effort to get to is kind of no longer a safety. Its super inconvenient at best. One thing with the Remington is that you can still access it using the semi pistol grip stock. But its not as good as the tang safety configured that way. Putting the Remington on safe for a right hand shooter sucks as much as taking it off safe for a left handed one on top of that.

I love shotguns. I got my first shotgun at age 12 for Christmas in 1986. A 12 Ga Mossberg 500 in Mossy Oak Camo (back then that meant it looked like a modern rattle can job). It has a white bead out front and a brass bead halfway down the barrel, and came with Improved, Modified, and full choke tubes. It has had a lot of use over the years and is still the only hunting shotgun I have. When I got it a friend of my Dads went with us to shoot it. He talked about using a sawed off Rem 870 in Hue City. You never hear any stories about guys engaging enemy with a shot gun from my day. In the Marine Corps I went through a "Fam Fire" with the Mossberg 590 in 1995. and later on the way to Iraq in 2003 they did a Benelli M4 class on board the USS Boxer on the way to Iraq. I tried to get one instead the M16 to take "ashore" but the boss wasn't having that. Ended up with another POS Colt M16A2 and my M9. Probably the better route anyway. Good stuff Coch.

I am not looking to go to war so a home defense shotgun is plenty for me. A Mossberg 20 gauge Cruiser with a buttstock change out and a buttstock sleeve. Simple, lighter recoil, and still gets the job done. Five plus one is plenty in the tube and six more on the sleeve.

i agree. shotgun works just fine for home defense. rifle for rooftop Korean activities if it comes to it. im tired of people acting like you can't fight with a shotgun. the problem isn't effectiveness it's how long you can stay in the fight shotgun ammo is too hard to carry.

I think the biggest culprit to shotguns being deemed inadequate is that 9 pellet 00 Buck that gets placed in the universal category and is usually the only buckshot you can find at the store. It's a low amount of pellets for the size of pellet. I'm talking 2.75in shells here. No. 1 buck is marginally smaller for 16 pellets. No.4 buck is good stuff but limited due to size. So what to do when you need bigger? That would be the 8 pellet 000 Buck. After that the slug is what you want. Which is also severely under utilized. I'd say the second biggest culprit to the Just Say No to shotguns if it's not flying situation is the expectation of increased range capability. You need slugs for that and a slug gun. Good sights, red dot, aperture or even barrel mounted sights. That bead is useless for longer distance. Buck shot actually has less range than your typical defensive handgun. If you're carrying some kind of .357 with a 6" barrel loaded with. 357 you have at best 1/4 the range of your handgun. There really is no better weapon when you need a lot of power on a threat that is really close. The true advantage of buckshot is when the majority of the pellets hit the target. Multiple wound channels. It's not the send as much lead out there so at least one or two will hit. Even with 000 buckshot a hit with a single pellet is equivalent to 9mm FMJ. One thing mentioned in this video is the Vang Comp barrel. That thing is super expensive. But holy shit is it a big improvement to a 12 GA. The third culprit against the shotgun is recoil. Do not ever use birdshot for anything that can kill you unless that is all that's available. By that I mean there is no other ammo around and the party just started. I know full well it can kill at close distance and you can do the cut shell thing. But it's been used in anger and accidentally in several occasions and it is not impressive. I'd actually rather use a .380 handgun in a gunfight. This gets recommended for home defense and unless you're being subjected to an Alfred Hitchcock moment that is really bad advice. House, apartment, whatever. That is where No.4 buckshot is your friend as well as being a friend to potential bystanders. Every firearm will blast right though sheetrock. Let's get thay out of the way. But that smaller buckshot has much less power after going through it than the bigger stuff. So recoil is there to stay when using proper self defense ammo. The semi auto helps out with that in a big way though. Makes buckshot go from firing a few rounds and being done for the day to it being kind of fun to shoot. Final thing. 00 Buck has done a great job. It's a 12 GA shotgun for God's sake. If used appropriately it will do fine. But there is better alternatives than that stuff that should be explored. You have to special order it usually. Also don't discount 20ga. At close range against threat you're getting a good portion of what 12ga gives you and it is much better than .410 by a considerable margin. 410 really kind of sucks for just about everything. Unless you have a specific need for it I'd avoid it. Wanting it in a handgun is dumb reason to get it as well. You can get shots shells in .357/38, 44 mag, 45 Colt and even 9mm and .22lr.. Stick with a revolver though if multiple shots are required in a short amount of time. Hope this helps and thanks to Coch for the reloading techniques shown in this video. Haven't seen that before.

The Vang Comp 870 is by far the best you offered in this video! But what about the Beretta 1301, Benelli M4 , or the Mossberg 590A1. I understand your videos are on your experiences with these guns. But please don’t discount the effectiveness of a shotgun. With the right shells they are quite effective to 100 yards. And are the most formative home defense one can have. I say this with the most respect, and humbleness. Please Lord Keep us All Well and Safe.

I have a Mossy 590M, and basically gave up on anything bigger than the 10-rd mags - hangs down like an elephant dick. But, the 10-rd are a good compromise, and they fit perfectly in Condor MA9 radio pouches!

Why place the firearm in such an orientation for a tactical reload? Isn’t it more prudent to keep it in the high ready position and load with the non-dominant hand so as to be able to send rounds downrange as quickly as possible?

Can't beat a good shotgun. My choice is a pump gun because of a simple machine has less parts. Less parts in a machine gets you a dependable machine. That choice was the Mossy 590SP. Lots of upgrades on the 590.

I dont think so. I have a book about their weaponry that is pretty legit from Kevin Dockery. Hush puppy pistol, stoner 63 lmg, SigP226 and, mp5's, were all covered extensively in it. As well as explosives and knives. It wasnt something written to rip off some 10 year old aspiring to be a SEAL by a guy who tells people he was one who still cant get laid from even the loneliest off putting woman out there. But it has pictures and the explanation of the SOPMOD M4 Program. So it was written post 1996. In the shotgun section only the Ithaca 37 and Remington 870 are mentioned. The 870 used was isually purchased with the factory top folding stock from a law enforcement supplier and the Ithaca was used in Vietnam with a duckbill spreader that sent the shot out in a oval patern with long part of that shape being horizontal. Using No. 4 buck. Apparently really effective in the thick jungle to. Also some discussion of the flechette rounds that turned out to be worthless. But the AA12 Was available at that time. There was also some testing of the Daewoo shotgun. Similar to the AA12. It is considered a much better weapon and could not pass any of the tests it was subjected to. It's a cool book and if you find it you should get it. A lot of cool pics in there including one of a combat post in Vietnam that shows just about avery type of firearm they used. They did use the UZI back then before adopting the the S&W M76 or the MP5. Purchased through the US Secret Service. Browning Hi Powers purchased through the CIA, MP5 originally purchased through German GSG-9 and UK SAS to getting their own Navy version. All kinds of cool shit like that in it. Youll like it.

Im going to be honest and straight to the point. I actively train with my shotgun gear. Im always reloading with dummy rounds and I test recommended gear as a system (keyword being system). I will give the benefit of the doubt and say that this video was more of a cool video and for fun. That being said the orientation of the shells not all being the same and the reloading technique displayed when the gun was upside down in the right hand is horrendous. Need to stick to one orientation. Period. Under stress many people drop rounds because they fumble with shells trying to spin them in their hands because they try to port load and then load the tube. Its pretty rookie. If your source of income is educating people on youtube then put a little more effort into the area of shotgun when you show it, please.
