The more I see of combat footage, and the older I get, the more I see misery and death. Heroic deeds, courage, bravery, self-sacrifice, teamwork and mateship in adversity yes, but also sadness, death, and destruction. I understand why we will always need and have armed combat, but where once I would see an aeroplane shot down, and think "another plane gone", I now think about the person or people in it. Of course, I am sure my perspectives would change again if I was in a position where I had to fight for my country or my beliefs - and this I would do, when, and if the need arises.

1:05:00 FN MAG operator here (in the IDF) (mechanized infantry of the armored brigade) I can say about that, indeed I asked multiple time on long time mission without ressuply (12 hours without resupply possible) for other to carry ammo. but on top of the ammo I got on me, I usually went with 400 ammo minimum on me (I also have the spare barrel with me) and I would add 150 bullet belt to soldier (I would take 4) usually what I would do is when I used a belt I would call one of the guys (if I didn't remember who had it because of the situation I would just call for a ammo belt and those who had one and was the closest would understand because sometime you would not remember who gave you the belt and who didn"t) and that usually how you differentiate between a rookie machinegunner and an experienced one, a rookie would use half his ammo without even paying attention, while an experienced one would use it in very controlled situation, you do most of the cover fire so you are the first one they would call in almost every situation, so you really need to ammo for long period of time , the thing is to keep the enemy on edge but save as much ammo as possible, because trust me if you shoot in the direction of someone even if it's 20 meter away from him, the dude don't know if you actually see him or if you have no clue, and will always think you see him. (but if he accepted his fate and just wait to die but in that case they're usually not in a good mindset and will make a lot of mistake, because they permit themselves to do that mistake...) and usually will keep him pinned for the rest of the force to close in and clean up the house/position. it is a mental game, but hell I love the FN MAG, accurate, reliable, strong. was bad to carry it but worth the firepower... because with m16 you barely know where you hit at 300 meter + while with the fn mag you see impact with clean eyes on 500 meter+, it is a hell of a difference. and I usually keep it on mode 3 (gas mode), people say to keep it on 1 or 2 so it doesn't get too dirty, but trust me keep it on 3 but if you are in a clean environment which is usually not the case... it will get dirty faster, but that also why I keep oil with me, both because the gun get dry after heavy use and will begin to create jam, but also to clean in up every day.

@Pehwr Totally incorrect, don't buy that. It was a national holiday in Israel that day, and it was Shabbat as well. Took time to mobilize. Lots of lessons there, but the idea that the army stood down for 6 hours is just incorrect. The first soldiers arrived half an hour into the attack, but they were too few to repel them against thousands of armed terrorists.
