SSSS Gridman and its sequel does feel like a retro styled anime with its setting but you may need to read up abit on the original series because theres a bit of cameos from an old character as well as a twist at the end but other than that it feels like an old anime adapted to modern standards

Various manga adaptations were released both during its airing and afterwards. Many toys were also produced. The anime itself was brought to the Philippines. Production of Combattler was April 17, 1976 while Voltes V is June 4, 1977 are the same creator. The series (along with the later two shows) was created by Saburo Yatsude, who would later go on to create Golion (best known to American viewers as the "Lion Force" half of Voltron). ... The same concept would later go on to be used in Voltes V and in the Super Sentai series.

Voltes 5 lasted for 40 episodes. In the Philippines, the last remaining episodes were treated as a movie and aired in the 90s due to the fact that President Marcos, Sr. (Not to be confused with incumbent President Marcos, Jr.) banned the series.

Voltes V is basically a spiritual remake of Combattler, specifically the first half. But with the designs and names tweaked and a subplot about a missing dad slotted in. @VitedaPeterPan That's essentially what I said... And it's blatently obvious Voltes lifts a lot from Combattler.

I just watched the ending for Combattler V, and I am at a loss for words...it seems like the show didn’t want to go anywhere in terms of plot but was forced to. I mean I loved the characters, like REALLY loved the characters, but you need a good story to go with it and I’m sorry, Combattler V doesn’t have a good story, just good characters.

The Geeky Preacher......yah....it's just too bad that the ending wasn't a good one.........although i just read from the Wikipedia about it's real story ending.......that wasn't even aired or showed as of yet.....and it's theory in its final episode was this: "while Combattler V's Nambara connection was destroyed, Empress Janera was still shocked when she learned that the Team was aware of the bomb she planted at Combattler's left foot that have blown their base.....but the battle continued on, right until Janera was defeated.......but many were unaware that Empress Janera planted an explosive at the Earth's core. Just in time when Earth was about to be destroyed, DEUS, the true leader of the Campbellian empire, called on to his people to revolt against Janera's evil forces on Earth...... .......and soon after, DEUS came to Earth, along with the Combattler Team, to help rebuild everything on Earth that was massively destroyed both by the forces of Prince Garuda and Empress Janera

I give Voltes and Daimos shit for their subplots(especially Voltes!) but at least they had intriguing main stories. The only thing in terms of story Combattler had going for it was it’s characters(except for Hyoma, didn’t like him) but everything else just dragged although while the ending was not the best, at least it was a happy ending unlike some shows I’ve seen... *cough*Baldios!*cough**cough*
