Yeah, that could've been done much safer than with a knife big enough to cause a horrible stab wound or cut in so many different ways. e.g. a simple spike wielded by someone else that has no side cutting edge and can just be driven through the ball into the ground.

My understanding of physics would say they should retain their motion for longer, because of the lower air drag and turbulence in a vaccuum. Things that rely on air to stabilize and such may have trouble doing so.
