I wasn't a farm kid, but I did grow up in wheat country in North Dakota. The farmers there always seemed to store and dry grain in metal bins rather than in a building like Harry uses. Are metal bins used in England at all (now that I think of it, I don't actually remember seeing any bins in my two visits to England)?
@harrysfarmvids5 жыл бұрын
mark mywords most farms I know no longer use silo type grain storage bins as today’s big combines mean grain comes in at such a rate, tipping it on the floor is the only way to keep up. Many farm silo systems are only 20tonnes an hour on intake while a big combine can hit 40-50tonnes an hour in a good wheat crop..
@st1100boy5 жыл бұрын
Harry's Farm That makes sense. It probably explains why I see farmers here temporarily store wheat in big open "rings", then move it into bins, or the local elevator, soon after. Keep the videos coming, Harry!

Maybe for reference: would a farm your size with the earnings you make and the costs currently involved generate a sufficient profit for any farmer? Or do you need any kind of 2nd income (I get that not everyone can be a journalist at the same time) to live with a family of 3 or 4? The farm seem big, harvest quite decent, yet the machines, seeds, fertilizer, and general costs should be significant too. In short: how much land does a farm need to make a livable profit? (Not necessarily with a Countach in the garage 😉)

I wish youtube had smellivision for your wild flowers. I used to live in the Forest of Dean, that and the Cotswolds are my favourite parts of England. Also love the craftmanship in the stone walls. Also a shout out for the Hook Norton Brewery! Do you test the finished product of your barley for quality control?
@harrysfarmvids5 жыл бұрын
Peter England I used to grow spring barley for malting under contract but Brussels recently introduced new cropping rules which meant I had to grow three different crops and with my limited storage space, it ruled out growing spring malting barley so I only grow winter feed barley now, which is moved off the farm before we start the wheat harvest. Shame.

Harry, just dipped into your new channel before i must get back on with my amateur house renovation - fascinating :) - privileged insight into farming where your passionate warmth comes across as even more deep seated than cars - i am going to enjoy catching up a bit more around midnight when i shall have earned another break :) Incidentally Harry, if you are reading this....i have read all the Hotcar series in my youth followed by Performance Car all of EVO up to around a year ago - I also chanced upon one of your photo shoots up in the lake district at the head of one of the passes in a stormy evening car park - Your photographer and his brother were among the crew incl JB - He was precariously perched atop a huge boulder to get the best angle on the car group...I surreptitiously edged around the base behind his position, not liking his perch much at all - I had a feeling what happened next, just moments before it did,, and rushed forward the last pace to stop him tumbling back down and landing head first on surrounding boulders..After a moment of extracting his mind from the 100% focus (scuse pun) on photography he realiised just how close he had come to almost certain doom - he looked me straight in the eye as the rain pelted down and said.. 'I owe you one' ... One of those moments you dont forget Why did I finally stop following EVO?...for me it became too esoteric - my grounding interests in HC & PC were well represented in the start, with hot hatches, used lower order 911s, TVR and such...but when it stretched out to hypercars...the gulf was too wide, even in theory...from then on, my interest started to wain as I started to get older - You will be pleased to hear however that it didnt stop me lusting after and finally acquiring a candy-apple pre-cat 4.3 Griff ":) - Which I have kept for over a 1/3 century so far...time to do some post lay up work and get her back on the road. :)..neither of us are getting any younger..! p.s. say hi to JB & crew when next you meet kind regards David, Kettering

I've always learned never to pressure wash equipment that is going to sit static for a substantial amount of time because water can get into the bearings, causing rust and therefore kill your bearings.
@GosselinFarmsEdGosselin5 жыл бұрын
The old timers always said leave them dirty, but the dust attracts moisture....and holds it there. Some would say clean it up, but don't soak everything, once again... You end up with moisture that's trapped by what wasn't cleaned up. We blow everything off with a big compressor first, then depending on what equipment it is, either a hose with a straight tip nozzle to flush everything out, then the pressure washer.... Once it's all clean, then run it for a few minutes to help dry things up. Then GREASE and OIL it. We've had great luck with doing it that way. Another advantage to the way we clean and service, it's usually two or three different people.... Two or three different sets of eyes inspecting as they clean. Much easier to find any issues that need to be fixed 😎
@harrysfarmvids5 жыл бұрын
Wouter van der Molen I agree if I was doing his later in the autumn but header sat in the 20 degree sun for several hours afterwards to dry off and I will be refitting it to the combine in a few weeks to run up and oil all the chains, so not going straight into a damp shed for 11months just yet!

It took one public amenities worker in the USA to get a clever lawyer to suggest a tenuous link to said Gardner’s cancer and here we are. Fact is, lots of things can be toxic in high doses, that’s why we have personal protective equipment and instructions for use. Someone walking through a roundup / glyphosphate field is not going to get cancer from that, same way if they smoke 20 cigarettes they won’t get cancer. However, drink some glyphosphate and there’s a good chance it could kill you or cause some very serious long term detrimental effects, same way if you smoke 200 000 cigarettes there’s a good chance you’ll permanently damage your lungs. The guy in the USA (if his cancer is inextricably linked to his use of glyphosphate as part of his job) could not have been using the PPE properly.

@@benpattinson1 Validity of either argument a side, that's a pretty disingenuous anology. Farm workers work in farms constantly and people eat crops every day. If you're comparing it to smoking then it would be proper to say 20 a day, for life.
