Combining Freehand and Thread Painting

Linda, thank you so much for your videos. They are a great help since I am fairly new. I have tried free hand quilting and I know it takes practice but I have a question about what your machine is set at to get the head moving so freely so that the petals or whatever are round and not square. I have a Gammill Optimum Starlet Stitched. Do you take the belt off? I would really appreciate any help you can give. Thank you so much.
