The HX Stomp XL's ability to mix snapshot and stompswitch mode is a game-changer. The original stomp could do this with its 3 snapshots and two external footswitches, but the sounds available in just one preset were pretty limited. With the Stomp XL's 4 snapshots and up to 6 footswitches, we're able to get a whole range of unique sounds.
In this video I'll be walking you through the global settings menu and explaining each selection that you'll need to make. Later on, I'll showcase a few of the free presets I've created so you can see how to best make use of the unit in this setup. Know that I reserved my external footswitch controller for preset switching in this video because I prefer quick access to preset switching. If you wanted to, you could set up the external controller for FS 7 & 8, and access the preset up and down functions by holding down the up and down buttons together.

Your channel rules and these XL stomp videos are just what I needed. But one thing I can't figure out is - when I create a preset I cannot go into stomp mode, meaning: when I go into stopm mode I see empty black squares and there's no colored lights on switches ABC or D and I can't shut individual effects on and off? What am I doing wrong,? Even when I take an existing factory preset and change it to my 4 saved favorites.. The stomp feature is missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you By the way my favorites are 70s chorus analog echo tube drive plate and simple EQ could it be that all of these choices don't light up?

I was having the same problem until I figured out that you must assign the particular 'stomps' to each button. HX Edit: press the tab that says 'Bypass/ Controller Assign' (to the right of 'Edit' tab. There should be no assignments in the left side pane if you are seeing black rectangles on the HX Stomp. Click on a 'block' in the signal chain above. It will now appear in the 'Bypass' window. From here you can select where that 'stomp block' will appear on your button layout.

@@chukrock Thanks! I figured it out A while back and it's been a while since I've used my board. but I think what I was looking to do was simply touch the actual foot switch with my hand and then it gave me the option to save The preset with the features of color in placement.

But can you setup snapshot 1 with a pedal board with multiple overdrives and yet have the option to add modulation PLUS snapshot 2,3and 4 with amp sims within the pedal? I basically want to do what you did but have the option to add a real pedal in one of the snapshots before the effects?

hi alex, i went from hx stomp to hx stomp xl and it should arrive tomorrow! do you know if it is possible to use the snapshot mode without necessarily having to click two buttons at the same time? I find it very uncomfortable! is it not possible to add also the snapshot mode with the “Mode” button?

Hi Alex. I was wondering if you know how to hard-reset the HX Stomp XL without using the HX Edit software? I just bought a brand new unit, turned it on, updated Line 6 Updater and HX Edit, and the unit proceeded to tell me it's on the latest 3.11 firmware, but there are no sounds and all of the presets are empty. Using HX Edit and clicking on the 'Restore to Factory Settings' does nothing...I saw online that the smaller Stomp unit merely needs to have buttons 2 and 3 held down when restarting the unit, but doesn't seem to be the same sequence on this one. Thanks in advance! ;)

Thank you for your tutorials - very helpful. I’m stuck and need your help. I am using the hxxl for vocals (yeah, I know) and I keep accidentally tapping the mode button live. I would LOVE to repurpose that button to literally anything else but using it as FS7 would be ideal. Is this even possible? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Mate, as a new hx stomp xl owner, this is a game changer. I'm a bassist, so running a full mono setup with some core snapshot sounds with some stomps mixed in (flange-delay), perfect! Loving your vids on these units. Quick question, I noticed a kind of low output on all my patches, especially where there's preamp or amp blocks. I found all patches have a default output of -4.5dB, so kicking that up to 0 helped greatly. Is this likely to annoy any touchy sound guys out there?

Hey Sean - you can set the output between mic and line level in global settings. I usually flip that depending on how I’m using the Stomp XL on that given gig. As for presets, I like to make them as loud as if the unit were bypassed. This is the easiest way to make sure everything is consistent across the board if you’re using a few different presets during a gig. Press the two knobs to the right of the screen at the same time and it’ll bypass the unit. Adjust the master volume parameter at the output of the preset until it matches.

Hey Alex, I'm having issues with my tap tempo. For some reason it stopped working on to of my presets. The only option is to manually set the speed in the effect settings and for some reason the tap tempo doesn't have an effect. Kinda stuck. Not sure who to ask. Ugh.

So only on two of your presets it’s not operating normally? I would open up HX Edit and see if the parameter inside the blocks you’re having issues with has somehow gotten flipped from a tap tempo subdivision to a time measurement. There should be a parameter available either before or after where you can reset it.

Great video, thanks a lot. Is there a way to have a selected pedal uneffected by changing snapshots? So having it set more like a Channel-Amp (Snapshot) and then external pedals (stompswitch) without the Amp-Channel Switching automatically turning a pedal on or off?

I don’t believe so unfortunately. The bypass state of an effect will be saved to each snapshot so that’s unavoidable. The best thing you could do is to set up multiple parameter adjustments to a stomp switch. When the stomp is “off,” that’ll be your low gain setting at 3.5 or so. Then engage the stomp and make the maximum value 7 for example. That’s one way to do what you’re asking.

@@AlexPriceMusician Helix has a Snapshot Bypass parameter on each block. If this is selected, then the bypass state is saved in the snapshot. If its off, then the block bypass state is not saved in the snapshot. You generally want this off for any wet effect that you want to control independently of snapshots. Then if you have say a phasor on and switch from crunch to lead snapshots, the phasor will stay on.

@@JaffaRoad You can only access global settings on the device itself. When you're programming the sounds in the preset, that can be done either way.

@@AlexPriceMusician just an fyi... I'm really enjoying the hx stomp xl. A few gigs after the above 2 my fender blues deluxe reissue, tweed, died in the middle of our second set. After previously watching videos including yours I knew how to scroll through and find the US tweed amp, I dropped it on my chain. Dialed it a little, ran directly through the system and finished the gig!! What a life savor!! We are a 3 piece so my guitar is vital...fyi. You have to realize that I'm not a tweaker... I am serious about my sound but not comfortable diving deep on effects, usually . Yet, this pedal is so easy to use and is reviewed by you and others thoroughly, so I was able to make it happen! Thanks for your work

If you touch and hold 2 footswitches at the same time while in snapshot view, you should be asked if you want to swap the snapshot assignments.

Hi Alex Thanks for this interesting tutorial. Amazing....I just bought this multi-effects and this video seems to me one of the most interesting, I simply have a question that I don't know if you can clarify for me. If in a concert of your own songs and mixed versions you have prepared about 10 different presets, each one with its 4 snapshots, is there any way to go from one preset to another faster than stepping on the stomp switch (Mode) to enter edit mode, then the 2 stomp arrow switches at the same time until you will go to Preset mode, select the preset you need at that moment and press the 2 arrows again at the same time to go to SNAP mode and one last step in Mode. It seems to me something very uncomfortable and surely it is because I do not know the mechanics in depth, right? Thanks again

Hey Roberto - I mostly use the stompswitches to navigate presets when I have a quick instrument changes in a musical pit or otherwise can’t bend down. Otherwise I’ve always just used the top knob to scroll through them. If you wanted to, you could assign the up and down switches to stay permanently on preset up and down. That’s in global settings. Then you’d still have switches A-D for snapshots.

@@AlexPriceMusician Hi Alex About the external controller I understand that if I decide to use it to change snapshots within a preset: Global Settings> Footswitches>FS7 Function> (SnpshtUp), Global Settings> Footswitchs>FS8 Function> (SnpshtDn) Once I have configured the snapshots within of my presets and I have selected anyone, I don't have to switch the device to Snapshot mode to go from one to another right? Being always in PRESET mode, I go from one preset to another using the arrows and from one snapshot to another using the externsl controller, right?

Hey Alex, I’m using my HX Stomp XL in this format and I’m having an issue where sometimes when changing snapshot (pressing the up button), I accidentally press the up and down switch at the same time. This then takes me to the mode where I can see all the snapshots on the screen rather than the stomps. Do you know if there is a way to get rid of the two button press command so this doesn’t happen? It’s caused issues a few times now where I’m supposed to be changing to a louder or quieter drive tone and it doesn’t change etc. I’m using the external foot switch to go up and down presets so pretty much the exact same set up as this 👍 Would really appreciate your help 🙏

I do that too from time to time and I really haven't found a solution for it. There is no global setting to disable it. Maybe in a future update? One thing I've thought of it to get a footswitch topper for the upper button to create a bit of difference in height. Haven't used command center too much yet honestly. I know Steve Sterlacci has some good videos on the subject, but not specific to the HX Stomp XL.

@@AlexPriceMusician I tried a topper and still had an issue unfortunately :/ I ended up playing around with global settings and have fixed it 👍 I put it into six switch stomp mode and then manually added the snapshot up and down onto the top left and the top middle switches. I now don’t have any pedals assigned to the switches underneath the snapshot up and snapshot down so even if my heel touches them nothing happens. Not as ideal because I now only have control over my snapshots and two individual pedals. However, because I mainly play rhythm guitar (I sing at the same time) having control over snapshots is more beneficial for me than individual pedals. Hopefully it’s an update in the future but I tried putting the snapshots up and down in the same place as in this video via global settings (top left and bottom left) and I still had issues. If my heel touched the bottom pedal whilst banking up snapshots nothing happened because they still cancelled each other out. So for now this will have to be the work around but it’s a shame because I’m only getting to use 4 out of the 6 switches :/

can I change amp type with snapshot? like what if I wanted a nice clean with a chorus and some ambience and then in another I want a high gain tone with a optional on/off delay. will that work with this? or If I pick a amp that has a nice clean and distorted channel, can I have it so one snapshot has a delay and reverb as my stomps while another snapshot has an overdrive and delay in stomps? as I can click straight from the clean snapshot with reverb and delay and no overdrive, to a high gain snapshot with overdrive enabled?

I don't believe you can change the stomp switches at all within a given preset by using snapshots. You'll want to use preset mode for what you're asking. You could do what you're asking with having two idfferent amp models in a single preset, but you'd need to load two different amp blocks, which is pretty DSP intensive. There is no way to use snapshots or stompswitches to change blocks.

I'm wondering if you've ever had issues with sound cutting out when switching between snapshots? Sometimes I hit the stomp button for a particular snap shot and it takes 2-3 seconds to respond. Ugh! Any suggestions?

Very useful video. I am setting up my new HX Stomp XL as you described but I’m not using any external switches. To change presets I have to long press the up/down switches twice (it cycles through bank/preset/snapshot in that order). I then select a preset with the up/down switch and finally one long press of the up/down switches takes me back to the snapshot switching mode. This seems like a very long-winded way of changing presets! Do you know of a better way without resorting to external switches?

You could set the mode switch up to quickly jump to preset mode. Switches A-D will select a preset and the up/down switches will page through banks of four presets each.

In global settings in the footswitch menu, you should be able to set the function of the up and down buttons. Set it to bank and see if it functions the way you’re asking then

Hey I appreciate these! They are nice to get ideas on how to use the new thing. I am having a weird issue with Snapshots and MIDI though. My Boss Looper starts whenever I click on my Snapshot 2 button. It seems to be linked to the preset locations and snapshot locations, and those advance the memory locations of the boss looper. It's weird? I might just get a different controller for the boss looper, or just don't use snapshots on that patch.

I love my stomp, but i think the pod go has best form factor. Why didn’t they put the same processing power on that?

Probably just so they don’t harm their business model. If they gave us everything we need in the most affordable product, there’d be no incentive to buy one of the larger ones.

@@AlexPriceMusician yes, but It doesn't have to be more affordable than the stomp xl. The Helix LT is very big, and the XL is the right size, but in the pod go format it would be better in my opinion. Also, I'd like a Helix "Boss Katana Air" version: wireless and good for living room :-)

Yeah i have also thought this, putting the Stomp XL firmware in the POD Go hardware would really hit more of a sweet spot at least for me. I think the Helix LT is to big and heavy and the POD Go may be a bit limited mainly due to its semi fixed effect chain, i also like the option of a built in wireless which the POD Go has. If it werent for the size and weight i would probably own a Helix LT, but now im looking for alternatives like the POD Go and Stomp XL, i would like a built in expression pedal and bigger display which POD Go has. Line 6 really should make a smaller and lighter Helix LT, i think only the Headrush is bigger.

So, I read the title of this video and thought, "Wow, perfect, exactly what I'm looking for!" Less than 10 minutes in to it I felt so inadequate, I felt like sending this machine back! Either I'm not that bright, or you're going way too fast. Either way, it's not intended for people like me.
