I've lived my entire life in the desert, watching the cacti in the yard growing fruit every year. Never had the courage to actually grab one and eat it though. Maybe I'll have to try this!

The prickly pear is very common in the place where j live, and traditionally to remove the thorns and such, we have special baskets where we put a few of them at once and as you shake the basket, the movement and rotation detaches them from the fruit.

Love the snack breaks! A nice splash of science in grade -1. Did you get a new camera? The quality looks great!

Thanks! I don't own the camera this was filmed on, but it'll show up again in the future sometimes. I still need to upgrade my own camera/audio gear when I'm able :)

Botany is fun, although nothing’s really changed, since this channel has always had about 1/5 of the episodes be some sort of snack break :)

I remember finding one of those cactus fruits growing on a cactus in my elementary school’s garden, so I picked it and tossed it around some, only to find tonssss of tiny little thorns all over my hands a while later haha

This actually gave me an idea. If you can burn the glochids off the fruit, you could also burn them out of your hand!
@litigioussociety4249

I got those glochids in the knee of my pants once while working around someone's house. I was bending over the cactus, and didn't even realize those little hairs are all over the thing. They kept poking me as you said like little splinters. Had to run to a bathroom, turn my pants inside out, and get them all out. The really annoying thing is those cacti have obvious spikes on them, so it's easy to think the rest of the cactus is safe to touch.

You can just hold prickly pears on the smooth skin, all the dangerous parts are on the bumps on the skin, just don't touch that. No need to do all that work. You slice the top and bottom off, and do a shallow cut from top to bottom so you can lift up the skin and just peel it off. That way you can get all of it. Just eat the seeds too, they're perfectly fine to eat and you end up wasting a lot if you try to eat around them since like 2/3 of it has seeds. You don't need to chew them, I usually do because they have their own flavor but they are fairly hard.

Can you attempt to explain the 4th dimension in not confusing ways? It's just another pair of directions like left and right, or up and down. But many people seem to think of it as a weird non-Euclidean space where things appear and vanish from existence. You could use an example of a 2D stickfigure traveling along the 3rd dimension and how that would look. It would look like a vertical cross-section of our view if we looked to our left while walking. When I think of 4D space in my head, I think of the things further away from me in the 4th dimension being slightly transparent. I think it helps to see a wireframe view. You can represent this in lower dimensions by having a 2D being seeing the plane they are on 100% visible, but things on another plane are translucent. You could also color code it as red in one direction and blue in the opposite direction. Sometimes I rotate my view by squishing the 3rd dimension to let the 4th dimension take its place. You could also replace the vertical axis with the 4th axis. Then you can see all 3 horizontal axi at once. It looks like you're in space because you can ignore gravity. This doesn't work when the terrain bumps up and down though.

I have only ever done this with a gas stove, but it only takes a fraction of a second with that type of flame. The goal is not to cook the fruit.
@wavesforthemasses2247
@wavesforthemasses2247 Жыл бұрын
ahahh that's not how to eat it :) you just need gloves (thick ones), a knife and a fork. Wear the gloves, hold the fruit in place using the fork and peel it with the knife. If you still prefer to reduce the thorns keep the fruits in water for an hour before peeling. P.S. you are not supposed to spit out the seeds.

Something tells me you'd enjoy the botany channel, *Crime Pays, but Botany Doesn't* They have a nice (or horrible, I suppose - depending on tastes) advert that starts the latest episode. I suppose if you're aiming your own content at e.g. little kids (in addition to all the big kids who lumber over here), you might have to delete my comment, but you might end up bookmarking it for yourself, even so. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJeTknuNmbh7eNU (The reason you'd delete it is that sometimes strong language is used on that channel.)
