Ben, congrats. on all the views. Can't wait for you and DragBoss to get together. Individually, you guys put out great and informative content much of which can be applied to different brands and applications. Together...I'm certain all us gearheads, Ford and otherwise, will gain additional valuable insight. Looking forward to it!

James, under extreme compressions/boost/nitrous, the combustion chamber can be violent as far as the burn process occurs! We must in some way continue the burn equally and reach those isolated areas that have not been consumed yet by the ignition front! This way we can safely have a fast burn and minimize the quick progression to an explosion or explosive effect.

Ben, what is the deck clearances on these engines with this problem of detonation on the intake side of the chamber? I'm wondering if the pistons are coming above the deck and piston rock at TDC may be a factor in this.
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 8 ай бұрын
Piston rock will somewhat affect the quench clearance some but ultimately the overall squish opening is the deciding factor! Perhaps if you have an excessive piston skirt clearance will that come to play.

CAN THE V-GROOVES BE APPLIED TO IRON LIKE THE E7TE? I KNOW DV SAYS TO HAVE A SCAVENGE PLATEAU ON THE QUENCH SIDE USUALLY 15 DEGREEES. @BEN ALAMEDA RACING.
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 11 ай бұрын
The Directed V groove should be cheaper to do on an E7 head and should provide a better result than having a soft quench lay out. I will expand on these thoughts and comments when I finally do the more detailed video.

Why they dont do it at the factory ?

Not all factory engineers have a racing pedigree and many do not care for high performance of any sort. Therefore close minded to these kind of things.

I found out it must be about .040 to no more than .047 taking into account the rod stretch into the equation. It is quench sensitive from what I noticed!
@stuartwall8212
@stuartwall8212 11 ай бұрын
If compression speeds up combustion, at what compression point is a tight quench sure to cause a problem....or are there other factors? Is 10:1 safe, or would you recommend a groove there too given a .035 quench? Perhaps I should wait for your next installment of info??? lol...Thank you Ben for being a wonderful instructor in these things.

I remember reading about this 10 years ago. There was a guy out of India trying to prove that it was worthwhile, but didn't seem to convince very many people. I believe he had a background in 2-stroke engines, which don't have valves and therefore there's a ton of freedom to play around with quench area and combustion chamber shapes. In that world, having an angle or taper to the quench area is basically universal practice, because it's so easy to make the head any shape you want. Those guys have a whole science of determining what angle the quench band should meet the piston crown. I think Mr. Singh was trying to use his grooves to get a similar effect in the oddly-shaped and flat-milled quench areas found in most 4-stroke engines.

Many has kept this under wraps like myself and he I think claimed a patent on it but never explained the problem area where detonation actually starts. I basically directed the groove to this area wherein many others just cut the lines with not much thought process just for the sake of doing it aimlessly I suppose that is why many said it does not work. Those doing this for many years in competition will not claim a patent and lose what they have as an edge exposing it big time!

@benalamedaracing2765 I can't recall if he specifically cited the detonation problem he was trying to solve. But, I know he cited Gordon Jennings' 2-stroke Tuner's Handbook from the 70s as inspiration, which made it crystal clear to me. Jennings was so far ahead of the curve on combustion and detonation it's not even funny.

Should you do both the 5 degree mill and the V grove or just one of them? If limit to one, which one? Does this also apply to 4 valve heads? Thanks for sharing your insights?

Just use the V groove and I feel is just as effective or perhaps even more except for all out racing and boost/nitrous combinations.

Ben, thank you so much for showing the v-groove modification. Which one modification (v-groove or softening) do you prefer -or- thinks works better?
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 11 ай бұрын
I prefer the V groove because it can be done with a V file taking care you do not skip off to the sides! I use a old head gasket as a limiter to keep it from exceeding the gasket or armor line. Softening takes up more CC's and when you are already on the low side it just makes it worse!
