I, having been born in London, UK, in 1944, during WW II, from a Catholic raised Father, Germany, 1911, and a Jewish raised Mother, Switzerland, 1910, whose family came from Poland to Switzerland in 1905, and they both went to London in 1939, just before the war, found this movie to be quite moving, with us living then only a step away from being in the middle of the war.

A fine production that got to the heart other battle within resistors of any kind. I will say this about some of the other comments that have been posted. Bonhoeffer needs no easy labels such as Christian or martyr. HE was simply a good human being. He was as flawed as any of us, but more driven and braver than most of us. A person like Bonhoeffer needs no labels. All we can do for him is remember him and attempt to emulate him.

His Faith exemplifies the miracle available to any human being with the curiosity and courage to say,” I don’t believe in Jesus- but I invite you to show him to me. Help me to believe.” God will give you faith and courage and strength to face ANY HORROR on this earth. “ Be thou faithful unto death and I will give the a crown of Life.”- Revelation Chapter 2 verse 10. Once you have Jesus in your heart, read your Bible out loud daily to build your faith, because “ Faith comes from hearing and hearing the Word.” Doing this every day you will change and soon you will understand the source of his heroism was the unwavering faith of Dietrich Bonhoeffer as given to him by God. I urge you first to read the Bible (in its’ entirety) and pray to God for understanding. I likewise will be praying for you. The Old Testament you will find God’s promise to conquer death and the New Testament elaborates upon how God accomplished it through Christ on our behalf. I believe Bonhoeffer would attest to this and he courageously displayed his belief through his death. After reading the Bible I recommend you read all of Bonhoeffer’s writings starting with the cost of discipleship. To only categorize Bonhoeffer as a hero is to misunderstand Christianity and Bonhoeffer himself. I say this not to ridicule your current understanding of who Bonhoeffer was, but to deepen your understanding of him and his life and teaching. Blessings to you.

As a young girl learning about WWll and the Holocaust, Pearl Harbor, the final solution-atrocities against humanity I asked my grandmother Rose why didn't the US do something earlier to save the people? My family was from Belgium and those that were there rather than in the US or the UK were murdered. If there had been more people like Dietrich perhaps some would have survived. Instead of paying the price of the unconditional surrender , the Germans could have surrendered . What other kind of surrendered should have been offered ? Should the terms of surrender been something like , if you will stop fighting you may keep all the territory that you have gain in Russia and some of France and if you apologize to the Jews and for the atrocities that you have committed , all will be for given !

My immediate neighbors are Jews and I am a Jehovah's Witness. Their hearts are superior than pure gold by far. They are extremely kind. The gentleman takes care of my trash can every Wednesday without my asking him to do so. They are lovely human beings, and they are not in need of the smallest improvement.
