Thank you for this lesson. Great as always!! I love the knowledge that the Savior wept - He wants us to accept Him and His teachings and this group did❤️. It’s personal to Him that they accept Him and after the rejection of the Old World (“Oh, Jerusalem 😔”), this acceptance would flood Him with joy. I know (for myself), when I’ve struggled so deeply and then my efforts are accepted, it totally overwhelms me to the point of tears. 😁

I was so happy when I saw that there was another video lesson for me this week. In fact, 3 Nephi 17 is my favorite chapter of the Book of Mormon. I always think about verse 3 when the Lord tells the people to go home and prepare their minds. General Conference is coming up and I think this verse is also for us to prepare our minds, because the Lord will be there personally with our Father and we will feel Their Holy Presence thru the Holy Ghost if we do what He told the Nephites to do in verse 3.Thank you both for this fantastic lesson. I love the information and spirit you impart through your teaching. I have a question about the order of what Jesus taught to the Nephites. It seems like he introduced the sacrament and gave his disciples the priesthood before anyone was baptized? Can you please explain this. Thanks again for all the good news you send out.
@taylorhalverson30524 жыл бұрын
Yes, that appears to be the sequence of events. Tell me more what you are curious about. :)
@jeffsquires78314 жыл бұрын
@@taylorhalverson3052 isn’t the sacrament to renew our covenant of baptism. And we don’t give the priesthood to people who aren’t baptized. If we look at how things are taught in the church today we get people to be baptized then they partake of the sacrament then get ordained to the priesthood. If the Savior was teaching people who were members it would make more sense but it sounds like the disciples he chose needed to be baptized.
@taylorhalverson30524 жыл бұрын
@@jeffsquires7831 Got it, great question! Yes, seems that the norm is broken of this step-wise pattern (1) baptism, (2) sacrament, (3) priesthood. The way I understand it is that Jesus was initiating a new dispensation. Prior to his arrival, everyone likely had already been baptized, worthy men had received the priesthood. When Jesus arrived, he made things new: that means everyone needed to be rebaptized, worthy individuals needed to be reconfirmed with the priesthood. For some perspective on how the step-wise pattern is not always followed consider that in this dispensation, Oliver and Joseph received the aaronic priesthood before they were baptized. As for the sacrament, it is both a renewal of our baptismal covenant and its own covenant in its own right where we pledge our loyalty and love to God. Hope that helps! Keep asking great questions!!

They did NOT baptize all the people in chapter 19; only the 12 were baptized. The multitude only watched most of what happened on day 2. It is important to understand that the people there on day 1 came by revelation to be there on that day when the Savior came. They had a second comforter experience that was not offered in any way to the people on day 2. God always favors those in tune with the spirit. The people on day 2 heard about Jesus and then worked hard to get there on the 2nd day. They did get to WATCH some very great things, but they did not really participate in any significant way - certainly not like the people on day 1. They watched the fire around the 12, and they watched the angels ministering, and they watched the Savior come into the midst of the 12 (3 Nephi 19:12-14 ). "The multitude did witness it" (verse 15) - "ministering unto the disciples". I think understanding this properly can teach us many things.

Why was Nephi baptized? Wasnt he the prophet?
@jimmckin3334 жыл бұрын
@@treatyourightdwight Everyone must be baptized, just as Christ was. The 12 in this case were rebaptized to initiate the new covenant that Christ was introducing to them, leaving the law of Moses behind. This has happened several times in our day. The members of the church were rebaptized when the church was officially established in 1830, and the early pioneers were rebaptized after they reached the Salt Lake valley.

5:52 I thought everything had been destroyed...? What homes?
@taylorhalverson30523 жыл бұрын
Great question! We don't have a complete picture of what the destruction was like, how many homes were destroyed, etc. It is also possible that if many months passed between the destruction and the visit of Jesus that people rebuilt their homes. The first thing to be built after destruction is often homes.

Oh my heavens! 😢 My heart just broke in two when you explained that “the multitude gave way”. I thought, “am I giving way to those I love to get their own sick, lame, or otherwise weakened state to the only person who can heal them? Or am I trying to be the portal through which they must pass to get to the savior?” I hope that, as we read and study the scriptures, we learn to see ourselves in them. For me, watching “The Chosen” assisted me greatly. May the Lord bless all that are in need of His healing touch. And may you recognize others who also need it and that you, too, make a way for them to get to him. Because they are hurting so much and need us to make a path to him.

I find these lessons so wonderful and the spirit is so strong as they are presented. At the beginning of this lesson, it was stated that Jesus perceived that the people were weak and Jesus stopped in his teaching and looked upon the people. I believe that if we desire to help people, we must first help them in their temporal needs first before we can help them in their spiritual needs so that they know, it is being done out of love because they are suffering. Jesus then proceeded to heal the sick.

I love how you both shared pictures of your families! So beautiful!! Love truly multiplies with each child. Our fifth child became ours when we adopted her through the foster care system. She has two siblings that are not in foster care because they have a different dad and he has custody. But her two siblings come to visit all the time and I love them like my own! I have a great relationship with the birth parents too and they have become like family to me. The birth mom of my daughter tells me that she looks up to me like an older sister. 💕 It makes it so worth it! 💕There are so many challenges that come with adoption that only those in the trenches understand... so many I never anticipated. Let's just say I've learned some pretty ugly things about myself, some very hard and humbling lessons, learned I have a lot of pride... Through it all, I have gained a great appreciation for the gift of repentance, the atonement of Christ. With all of these challenges and hardships, my eyes are being opened more and more to the worth of every soul and how much God wants us to get over ourselves, get outside ourselves, and truly care for and lift eachother.

Why was Nephi baptized in chapter 19? I would assume he would have already been baptized. Were the disputations around baptism so bad that the Lord had to have them all re-baptized with the correct words to the ordinance?
@annalyseerickson55904 жыл бұрын
First, Thank you to all who work so hard to put this amazing resource together. This resource (and especially Taylor and Tyler) have exponentially expanded my understanding of the Book of Mormon. So again thank you. My question is, as I have read through 3rd Nephi I am a bit confused as to why the first thing the Savior does when he meets Nephi is to give him "power that ye shall baptize" (3Nephi 11:21-22) and in 3rd Nephi 19 while they are awaiting the Saviors return Nephi is baptized with Timothy and then they proceed to baptize all "all those whom Jesus had chosen." As a prophet did Nephi not already have power to baptize? In 3rd Nephi chapter 7:24-26 it talks about Nephi preaching "repentance and remission of sins" and "there were none who were brought unto repentance who were not baptized with water." So is there a difference between the power or authority Nephi had before the Savior's coming compared to what he receives after the Savior comes? Is it because the Law of Moses has been fulfilled so a new covenant through another baptism is required? Which wouldn't make sense either since generations before Nephi (3rd Nephi); Alma baptized by water with "authority" and by immersion (Mosiah 18). Sorry, rambling thoughts. Any insights into this would be appreciated. Thank you again!
@taylorhalverson30524 жыл бұрын
Excellent question! If we remember that this is a new dispensation, often God will reinstitute ordinances, baptism and priesthood as a signal that this a new dispensation, even if technically the priesthood power for those ordinances already exists. Does that help?

I appreciated hearing the 'parable of the grateful cat' - can you please tell me which general conference Elder Talmage shared this? THANK YOU!
I love all your lessons and this one especially so! I married at 21 and planned to have 6 children by the time I was 30. The Lord had a different plan and we were blessed with a beautiful daughter (now 21) by adoption. We wouldn't have it any other way♡ So grateful for your beautiful insights into family, Christ and the miracle of children❤Kia Kaha and much love❤

Thank you Tyler and Taylor for teaching by the Spirit of the Lord. I found it interesting in 3 Nephi 17:3 that Jesus invited the people to "go ye unto your homes and ponder." And again in 3 Nephi 19:1 "every man did take his wife and children and did return to his own home." Isn't is marvelous that through all of the destruction which occurred on the face of the land at the death of Jesus, that He kindly and with surgical precision preserved "the homes" of the more righteous of the people? I think that this should give the righteous of our day great hope that notwithstanding all the destructions yet to come upon the earth in these latter days, that He may preserve our places of refuges, our temples and homes.

3:30 I heard these words and I realized proper perspective is that we are partners with God and there is no need to resist or resent commandment's. As partners we are merely getting direction for the task at hand should we accept it.

Within this lesson is probably THE MOST beautiful, comprehensive explanation of the Sacrament symbolism. Thank you! Do you have this explanation written anywhere? I’d love to share it (and of course attribute it to you).

This way the Savior FIRST succored the people reminds me of a quote I heard from an Elder on my mission; I think Brigham Young said it. Paraphrasing: “If someone comes walking down the road, torn, bleeding, hungry, you don’t rush up and ask them the Golden Questions: ‘What do you know about the Gospel of Jesus Christ-would you like to know more???!!!”

6:00 I don't think Christ is changing his game plan as be assesses his flock. He would have already known that they were weak before He appeared to them. But it certainly may be that they didn't now they were weak. And so perhaps Christ is giving them an out - knowing full well that they would need it. So He admonishes them to go to their homes to ponder the things He's taught. He knows that the the Holy Ghost will teach them the truthfulness of all things. I think this was all just part of His plan. Now, I agree that we as teachers are not always so insightful, and we should assess the readiness and understanding of those we teach, whoever they may be, and admonish them to go to their homes and ponder the things we have taught. Question though if anyone sees this: I don't see the Nephites observing the Passover feast which observance was commanded in Exodus 12:14&17. Have i missed something in my studies?
@taylorhalverson30524 жыл бұрын
There is strong evidence that the Nephites did know of Passover: knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org/knowhy/were-nephite-prophets-familiar-with-the-passover-tradition knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org/knowhy/did-alma-counsel-his-sons-during-the-passover archive.bookofmormoncentral.org/content/passover-setting-lehi%E2%80%99s-exodus Hope you enjoy these!

I loved seeing the pictures of your beautiful families! I also didn't get married until I was 31 and didn't have children until 35 (through adoption, too!) During those childless years, the empty place in my heart was filled many times by nieces and nephews--of siblings, cousins, and friends. You talk about how the single aunt, uncle and friend are blessing your children, but you and your children are blessing their lives too!

I love the personal examples you both gave! How we each have other's that come into our life & our children's life! One day our children asked us, how is aunt Phyllis related to our family? She is our adopted family whom we chose! She has blessed our life & our children's in countless ways! Thank you again for this Beautiful lesson! This has always been my Very favorite part in the Book of Morman!

I learned early on during my mission back in the 80s that when I was spiritually fed to a high degree at Zone conference I would get a "zone conference headache". I've now got a zone conference headache. Such an uplifting lesson. And you both have beautiful families. I got married at 37 and we were blessed with two boys. The oldest is just 21 and has special needs. He has taught us many things and he has a childlike faith.

I like looking for the differences because it helps me focus on the truth... Mosaic law, the gospel on ancient Israel, in the book of Mormon, in the infant church of the 1800-s, to the recent changes put in place during a pandemic... All help me to see the truths of God and His hand.
