I'm a long time sub of JDs. Love his channel and all that he shares with us. Wonderful human being! I have been lucky to have visited Normandy. My grandpa fought there, lost his leg in N France, Sept '44. My dad is an AF vet, I'm an AF vet. I love how much JD gives praise to those who sacrificed so much for ALL of us! Safe travels.

I was at Normandy for the 75th anniversary and our tour guide did an amazing job but I’ve learned immensely from JD and Paul Woodage.

Good point on the position of the bunkers. Anyone who ever served in the services may understand the positions of foxholes. So that each man is firing out the corner of the foxhole, usually two with an embankment in on their side. Their field of fire is cutting diagonally across in front of the neighboring foxhole, as likewise the neighboring foxhole field of fire is front of theirs. As a solders the concept was hard to understand, but I think now it makes more sense.

Been told by our tour guide at Normandy, lines on the concrete wall served as acoustic damper

Big Red 1 is headquartered in Manhattan, KS. You can't miss it from the interstate. They have a huge water tower emblazoned with the "Big Red 1" logo.

Must’ve been terrifying for the German solders manning those bunkers. At sunrise to look out and see thousands of ships and then the bombardment started.

I've got a bullet round, which has to be US, that I was fortunate enough to find down in the sand by the concrete at that very same bunkers main gun port. Under the Engineer memorial, that's the same bunker, back in 85.

When I first read your comment, I misread it as "I've got a bullet wound".. I am so glad my eyes need a break. Your comment is way much cooler.

I think those patterns on the wall were made to break up sound.

Think maybe those marks in the walls were for sound deadening, more than camo.

Is this WN60? Trying to see from a map...but unsure.

Wasn't that the mg position? Which, in fact, is very close to this gun position, now notable for the US combat engineer memorial erected atop. If you're at the Omaha cemetery, looking seaward, it's to your right, just down in the dunes, above the 'draw'.
@WWII-Skipabeat7 ай бұрын
Thank you, visiting soon, have been to one spot on Omaha but will be walking along this time to take more of it in plus more elevated positions like this.

Not taking away anything from courageous leaders such as Cota and Dawson, one has to remember the vital close fire support from USS navy destroyers, some of whom beached themselves to pour enormous amounts of gunfire into these gun positions to save the infantry. Which they did. I don’t believe the landings on Omaha would have succeeded without their help.

I came across a cassette he recorded we believe for his inclusion in Stephen Ambrose’s book D Day release for the 50th commemoration in 1994. I did not know what was on it, until when in Holland/France to LiDAR scan D Day sites commemorating the 80th anniversary Meagan’s man had a cassette player. It turned out to be a 90-minute description of his tour of duty from North Africa, Sicily invasion including support of Patton’s Mad Rush to Messina, Salerno, Normandy and on to Okinawa and Truk lagoon where he ended the war. This is 2 minutes of it…Pop wasn’t too good on the Tech and I’m getting the tape professionally re-recorded, and I’ll add a lot of content I’ve been researching and collecting. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqPde2iujaubjNk

The navy did not make a direct hit. That is impossible to reach from the sea. Check your facts. The soldiers had their own living quarters. Again, next time check your facts on the atlantikwall
