What an asset to the horse world you are. I am so grateful to have found you. I have not been watching to long, but you have already improved my ability to understand a horse. I have been working with an older unbroken mare. Just couldn't reach her mind. But just today using your ground work. We made a great break through. I hope to continue to learn from you. Thank you, thank you, thank you

Pat i like the slow easy relaxed methods you use in training. That said train fast you will have a hot horse in his demeanor. The slow easy way will always be the best. People just do not get that a horse has to trust and trainer has to be honest. I have been in horses almost my whole life 74 still have and ride. If i do not smell like a horse i do not feel alive. I know their are still things to learn only because horses are not stupid. Body language is where it is. Reading is very important. I will keep watching your video's, never done learning. Thanks for showing these video's.

I started with a hot reactive arabian. Now I have a calm easy going responsive arabian. Anyone who says arabian horses are crazy or that stallions are dangerous has never met my horse.

I have been catching my arabian stallion at the open gate for years. As soon as I approach with the halter he turns his head to the side in order to allow me to put his halter on. He does exactly what he learned from the start when I wouldn't have been able to leave the gate open. Now it doesn't matter what is going on. By the time I saddled him I didn't even put his halter on. Just walked up with him completely free and saddled him up just like a horse who had been saddled hundreds of times. The people standing at the fence in order to watch the fireworks were disappointed because I prepared him just like with everything else. When a horse is well prepared the first saddle or the first ride are not events. Just a continuation of what you've been doing all along.

I have looked everywhere for a cricket on a snaffle. I can get them on a leverage bit, but not on a snaffle. Where can I get one?

We have them available on our website www.thedisciplinedride.com. Right now they are backordered but will be available once again in the first week in September. To clarify, our bit, The Missing Link Snaffle, is not a broken snaffle. It is a Mullen mouth with a cricket. Thank you for your question!

Great info., great video, but the noseband of the halter is too low on his nose. Looks like it's on the soft cartilage,which could possibly cause damage if he is pulled on firmly. Just an observation.
@PatnDebPuckett
@PatnDebPuckett 5 жыл бұрын
That’s exactly where we like to put the halter. If you think of fulcrum and leverage, having the halter high up on the bony part of the horse’s nose does not encourage the horse to yield. It is easier to tip his nose if the halter is closer to the end. Out of literally thousands of horses that we have worked in this way, we have never injured a horse’s nose. When we tie a horse, we raise the halter up so the halter can’t slip off the end of his nose or cause injury if the horse gets hung up somehow. But I must say that it would take a pretty brutal action on the part of the human to injure a horse’s nose with a rope halter. Thank you for your comment and giving me the opportunity to clarify why we do what we do...

@@PatnDebPuckett Thank you for the reply. I'm going to try tying the halter your way. Their noses are definitely more sensitive down low than up high . God bless.

Wondering Pat, if in your opinion you could ground work a mule in this same way? I ask because I have heard you cannot train a mule using the same methods you use to train a horse
@PatnDebPuckett
@PatnDebPuckett 4 жыл бұрын
The saying is that mules are like horses only more so. Not sure exactly what that means but we use the same groundwork when we work with mules.

I enjoyed this. A mini master class. Ya need to know a little something for it to flow in your own training, but good all around stuff. I am not a person who sits and watches a half hour of video. This was pushing my limit. I say, if you can go under @6:00 that would help people. That said, it’s good stuff man & m’am.

All of your horses are so soft and light on their feet. What do you do with a horse that is just stuck? We work with alot of older horses that are donated to our EAL (equine assisted learning) program and they have all kinds of "stuff". They all end up amazing for our clients, but some are more sensitive and lighter than others....Loving your work. Thank you guys! Lori, Salinas, CA
@PatnDebPuckett
@PatnDebPuckett 4 жыл бұрын
Well there’s stuck and then there’s stuck. If a horse is stuck like he’s about to explode, that’s probably not the type of horse you would have in your EAL program. If by stuck you mean dull, that’s another story. You have to ask yourself what exactly you want from these horses. Is dull a good thing for dealing with certain types of clients? We get quite a few horses from Baja that are great in the saddle but have no clue about groundwork. I have to tell you that I don’t mess with it. It’s just not worth it to me to flog around with a flag or get after them with the end of my lead rope when they do whatever I want when I’m on their back. Groundwork is supposed to be a tool. If you don’t need that particular tool, don’t use it.

@@PatnDebPuckett Thanks for the quick reply. I am LOVING your videos - so clear, real and not showy. Just plain good. Nope, she's not stuck about to explode. She's a kill-pen rescue and was a broke, untrained horse (if that makes any sense). You could lead anyone on her, she'd follow a person on the ground. Just didn't know how to steer or go. She's so much better now and a real gentle asset to the program. She's my personal riding horse and she has moments of soft brilliance under saddle, usually when warmed up. I just haven't really been able to attain that same softness and lightness from the ground. She's a bit stiff behind, so it may be partly physical. I know it's hard to make any type of assessment with just a description. And, you are right, if she's good and quiet on the ground and good under saddle, why mess with it! Thank you! Please keep these videos coming. Do you ever do clinics in Northern California?
@PatnDebPuckett

We’re going to be in Janesville on September 13-15. It’s a semi-private clinic so it’s not listed on our website. I’m sure you would be welcome to audit. I would have to check with the sponsor if you would want to ride.
