It's refreshing to see someone take a more thoughtful approach to a thrifting video. I see a lot of people visiting thrift stores (especially in the US) and just buying tens and tens of really cheap items which feels very unsustainable and almost defeats the point of buying second hand. This video is an example of how higher income people should be thrifting imo so it was so nice to see it being promoted
@AntoniaSheldrake3 жыл бұрын
Please do more of these! Also, really appreciated the honesty about price/fit/not finding stuff and not feeling the pressure to buy things just because you are making a video. I think we have a lot to unlearn from haul culture because I wanted to see you with loads of success, but in my many ventures charity/vintage shopping I rarely find total gems that I truly love and end up having a lot of buying regret to avoid wasted trips.

Thrifting/secondhand shopping in the UK is fascinating! I will have to check out all those places when I’m able to visit again! I do wish when I went I was able to really explore more because I ended up mainly going to vintage stores in London whereas I know when you kind of go out of London sometimes there’s cheaper places that still aren’t on the same grand scale as America (honestly I think we just over-consume so much that we can’t help but have warehouses as thrift store) but have more of a thrift feel! Loved this and loved being able to thrift in London again through this video 💕

Do you really think that just Chinese women can buy beautiful Chinese dresses? That was a cheongsam dress. A boyfriend in the military gave me one long ago.
@eleo_b3 жыл бұрын
That’s weird, because in America they have these huge goodwill stores where you can walk around with a shopping cart and all. Here, thrift stores generally are not that big.

I love this haul! In terms of the leather pants, I would say to wear them for a while. Leather as a fabric is known to stretch a lot, so people always recommend sizing down in leather trousers, and they might naturally develop some give around the thigh as you wear them more. I know mine stretched the first time I wore them and I regret not sizing down.

That dress you describe as a kimono looks like it’s a cheongsam which is indeed Chinese (kimono are very much Japanese).

Hii :) I work in a charity shop, and although the pieces you bought which have never been worn before may feel like “cheating,” they’re actually super useful !! We get corporate donations of excess stock from large companies and it stops it going to landfill, allows us to charge slightly more then we would if it was second hand, and let’s people get brand new items for a lower price than in the original stores :)) Pls everyone go have a look in your local charity shops !! Especially around Halloween/Christmas we have some real gems.

I have many Asian friends and they laughed when I said I wanted a Chinese style blouse but was afraid of culture appropriation- they laughed and said Culture appropriation is in the guilty mind on the colonizers - they think it’s flattering that someone loves their culture and enjoys it 😳 so now I wear what I love without thought.
@SazBerry3 жыл бұрын
I really really appreciate that you didn't just go out and buy a bunch of stuff you werent sure of, for the sake of having a haul at the end (not that I expected you would). Haul culture is sooooo awful for consumerist mindsets - even with vintage/second hand - and this is exactly the approach ppl need to adopt when buying, asking themselves 'is it really for me/worth it' regardless of the context!
@Wheezywatches3 жыл бұрын
Thrifting is a great time to whip out a fabric tape measure. Especially if the changing rooms are closed, it can really help see if it’s worth the risk! Your experience is also a reminder that sizing is crap. Vintage to now, sizing is different, different brands size different and thrifted pieces may be shrunk a bit. Anyone reading whose new to second hand, it can be helpful to browse your size and the size up.

Pop Boutique sells those Hungarian embroidered tops for like £16-£25! Also, although these tops are traditional and exist since the turn of the 19th century, they are also very popular within tourists shops and are still being produced up to this day, hence why your feeling that it was a modern top was correct :)

I went to a warehouse in Silvertown E16 called Thrift factory Kilo sale !! They had a massive selection you could spend a whole day there. They only allow some people to pick and choose as they are really exporting mostly. but They also do events , thrift factory £10 per kilo You need a strong back to go through the clothes as mostly in cages and trollies. But it was worth it as many where Brand new with Tags

Love the outfits! For london thrifting I'd really recommend looking out for live events like the beyond retro garage sale, kilo sales etc - I find a lot advertised through insta! Car boot sales are another good option 😊 for charity shopping Wimbledon is so good!!! For charity shops deffo worth expanding the search to zone 4/5/6 areas as less intense demand

Thrifting in the UK is so completely different than the US lol. Our thrift stores are often cramped, sometimes dirty, and if you find a good one in your city (I'm lucky to live in a bigger city so there's actually a few really good ones) it's still very obviously second hand? I don't know how else to describe it haha
@seanaepley31803 жыл бұрын
Thrifting in the US is traditionally intended to be an affordable option for people who actually need it...doesn't mean stores should be dirty, but definitely different than curated and true vintage focused stores. Also, we know the US has an over -consumption problem so fast fashion thats poorly made, then poorly cared for, then sent to thrift stores.

I'm so jealous of all of the options you have. I live in the US where thrifting isn't as popular yet. I'd love to thrift more but as a plus-sized person, the options are very limited. Plus you can only find good thrift stores in bigger cities. Poshmark, thredup, and depop are nice but you have to be willing to take a risk on the item not fitting.

You might have done this, but for pieces like the Chinese (?) dress, if the tag is from something like a costume/dance shop, I don't think its a problem to take the dress just for the material, it's not really "appropriating" anything since it is not an actual cultural piece.

This is not my thrifting experience. I have a thrift store that I always find SOMETHING at. It might be a CD, DVD, or original vinyl record, but it’s something. I went to another store when I went shopping on Thursday, and being an XL-2XL person shopping for t-shirts is hard, even as a guy. Everything was small to large, so I got one Hockey T-Shirt in an XL.

Love the leather trousers, I have a similar body shape to you and would have exactly the same issues with fit, so you have my sympathy! I think you could wear them with a longer shirt loose over the trousers and that would detract from the pleating. Especially as they look great in the legs and arse! I reckon over time they would stretch a little. Great find, so I hope you get some joy from them!
