The easiest way for me to come up with ideas is to write down all my favorite genres/settings and put them into a random combination generator. One of the results I got was WWI trenches combined with medieval knights which instantly sparked some ideas for a cool game. One thing I've learned too is that theres no such thing as a bad idea, just ideas that need more work. Even if a bad idea is completely transformed into something unrecognizable, it still got you to that other more polished idea.

Great video! I'll have to return to this when looking for my next project idea.

What works best for me is to think of simple mechanics and two-step (or cascade) mechanics. Ex: if you do this, then it make that. Then i add restrictions, or rules, or logic to make it hard and fun. Example : a cube that shoot a laser on one of its side +a conveyor belt + a rotating platform or I add a reflector/mirror for the laser. Rules or restrictions: every 5 seconds, it goes counterclockwise. Sometimes for puzzles, i work backward : i put the solution in place, then add obstacles. I make all prefabs (a plain cube sometimes) with scripts attached. then I play with it in realtime to get a sense of fun. If it isn't, I scrap the idea, but i keep the prefabs as a base.

Great video! Makes me think of an exercise i had to do in college where we were asked to make a list of games we played as children with friends or classmates and pick one or 2 and just change around, add or drop rules and see what happens. Its the same thing that can be applied to video games too

For sure! Games exist in a lot of different formats, just like stories.

I was listening to this in the background and the sound effect you use had me thinking each time that my headphones was running out of battery...

It is on there, actually. This is definitely not a video where you can get the full breadth of my gaming history 😂 there's so much more than I've mentioned here.
