Hello from Germany 😁! Yes, our Christmas Markets are a bit different, because it's mainly about food (historical) and alcohol. And that's still, what we do here: Drinking mulled wine, eating Bratwurst, roasted nuts,... People in the middle ages bought their "winterfood", like meat, on these markets or little wooden gifts. We also have shops (called Buden), but the main thing is food. It's winter, it's cold...we need some fat on our hips to survive 😂.

Ahh love Christmas markets! I’m from the Netherlands, what I miss the most in your Christmas market is actually the use of cute little houses/cabins as stands, instead of the white tents. It really makes a lot of difference in terms of coziness. But it seems that the three of you had a lot of fun so that is the most important! :D

Well, as a German I can say this Christmas Market is trying to combine European markets with the American taste. Europe itself is very different. I am used to little wooden huts with either foods or decorations you can buy. Personally most of the decorations are not my style but to me that's not the reason to go, it's the atmosphere. All the activities you saw I am personally not used to but maybe because of the different weather. Choirs from schools or other organisations might also perform. Depending on the city you might have ice skating, a ferris wheel or even full amusement park. There's really quite a versatile way to a Christmas Market. I'm glad you visited during the evening, it's the most magical at night. One day I'm sure you'll visit a Christmas Market in Europe. Looks like you enjoyed yourselves and that's what's most important.

I am from England, living in Germany since 8 years now. I personally think Christmas markets are far not that magical as Americans think. It way too many ppl around and extremely much foreigners as Turkish, Arabic and so on what doesn't make it as magical anymore. I even saw a Döner Hütte yesterday when i visited a Christmas Market 😅 I mean... 😅

I'm from the U.S. but I've lived in several European countries, and now I live in Vienna, Austria. I've experienced a lot of Xmas markets abroad, and while the one you visited had a lot of the stuff you'll experience in Europe, it was definitely very Americanized. Maybe it's missing some charm, but you definitely had more options there :) Here, they set up rows of little wooden huts side by side in many of the important city squares, and they'll sell food and ornaments. Really it's all about the vibes at these markets for me; it's enjoyable just to walk around and look at the lights and drink a mulled wine while being surrounded by beautiful architecture. Unfortunately, I love the idea of the Christmas markets in Vienna, but we are so full of tourists that at many of the city markets you end up shoulder-to-shoulder and back-to-front with a solid mass of people the entire time. Still, I love the markets and I cherish the ideal memories I have from when I've gone and not faced the masses. The markets in Bratislava (in next door Slovakia where I also lived) were honestly much much calmer and I was able to enjoy them more.

The ones I loved most were - Nürnberg with Lebkuchen (ginger bread) - Cologne cathedral for sure but it’s a little too crowded now - Hamburg Rathausmarkt with Santa coming twice a day - München Tollwood with huge tents wherein the little vendor-houses are Christmas markets I have yet to go to but I am so excited for: - Dresden Striezelmarkt - Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Greetings from the Netherlands, this looks very magical and very European Xmas market like. Although we are usually having small white tents (150-200) in which you can buy many hand crafted items, I do appreciate your American version of it. With us you may have Sinterklaas coming by once at a specific time, but you have Santa actually sitting there and you are able to take pictures and do many activities, so that looks like fun. Ours here do not have as many activities, they are usually scheduled as side events next to the Christmas market. In the German Xmas market (I am also German) are usually small wodden huts, particularly you will find Gluehwein stands and open fires and an ice rink.

I was born in Poland, raised in Germany and living in France. Poland didn’t really have Christmas markets, maybe now or in the big cities, Germany, is like someone already pointed out, it’s all about the food and alcoholic drinks and France is totally different again. In the north east they are almost like Germany and they have beautiful markets but in the the south west, were I live, it’s very tiny markets that are only one weekend long and it’s about artisanal products and no food. I was really bewildered last year when we went to one and I was so ready to eat and drink and there was nothing.

Considering how small European countries, and there’s lots of tradition in each of the villages. People either come home from the large cities or the villagers bring it because people want those markets and it’s time for these quiet villages to make some money. My husband noticed in videos he rarely saw children. So even though it’s wonderland like, maybe kids don’t think it’s wonderland like. In Calgary I noticed they have pony rides, horse drawn wagons taking people out for hot chocolate and a ride around the farm. But my kids always wanted to be outside playing in the snow. The dark usually was not fun because it was boring for them ( constantly hearing don’t touch) and easy to lose them if you get distracted.

I plan on going to Germany to a few Christmas markets probably in 2026. The German Christmas markets have lots of mulled wine, sausages, sweets (more native foods of the region). Each market in Germany is a little different from the other. Some have kiddy rides and Ferris wheels. Rothenburg is a medieval town with different tours you can take once inside the town. I absolutely love the Christmas markets in Germany.
