This character is so bizarre to me, because it's clear there is some knowledge of ASL going into his performances. But it looks like he chooses to be wrong. Like he will get all but one parameter correct, or have his pronunciation just slightly muffled or weird. Signing "dating" with an X, for example. It's unintelligible, but it looks right unless you know what it should look like. And every so often, something IS correct. My best guess is Fred Armisen watched some movies/videos/tv shows that included ASL, learned a couple of words very quickly, then just winged it. There's also a possibility that the fact he was trying to do this at the speed of a native signer, and that messed up his pronunciation on the words he did know. My favorite is at 2:42 he signs (In PERFECT ASL) "Thank you. Good. I'm sorry"

Acting is a serious business. Not everyone can do that sign language. Like for 3:43 minutes skit he learned sign language.

@@samueld92 Fred Armisen isn't deaf, but with that said, Marcus would be a terrible interpreter. You aren't supposed to speak to the deaf person verbally.

Not trying to burst any bubbles, wouldn't the interpreter know how to sign to him if he understand his signing? That kinda took me out of it. Lip reading is a lot harder and imprecise than most people think.

Well the idea is that Marcus tours with Richie as his interpreter. While lip reading isn’t always as efficient or accurate, when they’ve done it so many times it probably becomes easier for Richie. Especially when it’s generally just two things: “that went well” and “that one didn’t do too good”. Sorry if that doesn’t make sense 😳
